I went to see if I could find the NCAA ruling to read what's in there but I'm on my phone and it's too hard to navigate that website. I did find that Hamline was reprimanded in 1959 for basketball tryout violations of some sort.  Who woulda thunk it?

Here you go, found it. At least on my phone this is the page with the decision. I'll read it later.

Texas Ole

This kid is in elite company with the likes of Eric Dickerson. Giving a player a car used to be standard operating procedure in Texas. The difference is usually you would have a booster do it so you could deny knowledge. I think the NCAA forgot which school on I35 between Hillsboro and Austin they were supposed to investigate.

St John's has a 78% chance of defeating Bethel Saturday with the predicted score being 30.6 - 18.4 according to @LogHanRatings.

I hope Mr. Hansen's ratings are correct.

I just had a quick read on the train.  The Thomas More women's basketball team had their 2016 national championship vacated for almost the same thing, head coach loaning a car to a player along with some other violations.

I think the big concern for UHMB is that this was both a pre and post recruiting violation. And that multiple football staff members participated with the knowledge of and in addition to the head coach.  Further, the faculty member of the athletics oversight committee overheard some students bragging about someone getting a free car and dismissed it as hearsay, but 10 months later followed up virtually out of the blue with the gossiping student which is when UHMB self-reported. It's plausible to think that there may be a bit of a lax attitude towards the rules at that time.

Was that 2003 T -J game the one the field was mobbed?

The '03 Johnnie-Tommie game was in St. Paul at O-Shag. SJU won 15-12 in a very strange game. None of us stormed the field, though. Field storming didn't become a big thing in the MIAC until around 2009 or so. Even after the 409 game in '03, I don't remember a huge storming of the field. A bunch of people eventually walked onto the field for John's speech, but not what we would typically call a field storming.

Two other items of note from the 409 game:

1.  Scott Kirchhof, Bethel qb and current coach, was taken off the field in an ambulance. Ambulance literally drove onto the field. Turned out it was nothing serious but it sure was a scare.

2.  ESPN cut to Clemens Stadium from whatever game they were airing at the time to do a live interview with John.

It was a great game and a memorable day. It was also VERY cold..

The 409 game is my favorite Johnnie game of all time. It snowed off and on the few days before the game. I was on the SJU grounds crew and Br. Mark Kelly had us out there clearing the bleachers and field before the game. We were also clearing the rest of campus into the wee morning hours. I lived in Mary Hall at the time and I remember looking out my window to see a line of people already forming to get into the stadium at 8 a.m. and the gates opened at 10 a.m. in those days.

Awesome memories.

Pat inserted an old 2016 link to the Thomas More story over on the ASC Football thread. That NCAA penalty seemed very harsh too. A girl, who was a family friend of an assistant coach, was taken into the assistant coach's family home for a few months after knee surgery. Thomas More's recent jump to the NAIA makes one wonder how much the NCAA's hounding them contributed to that.

There were a number of fans who "stormed" in '03. Several inebriated students had some smack talk to throw in our faces as we walked off the field afterwards. But it wasn't a full on emptying of the stands where the field was covered.

I didn't know you worked for Br. Mark!  I did grounds the summer before my freshman year and through freshman year.  One of my favorite memories is shoveling deer **** off of the field prior to a '99 playoff game vs. UW-SP while being heckled by the Point players.  Back then, the field was grass and not fenced.  Deer were a common problem.

A tradition unrivaled...

This is all in our story as well.
