Caught almost all 4 quarters of the game, though I would have almost preferred to have just read about it...SJU impressed, especially on defense (not that the offense wasn't impressive, just that Erdmann is already a known commodity as being great, so it was expected).

Like Art, I thought it was going to be a very long day after SJU went blitzkrieg to go up 6-0, but the defense certainly didn't quit, which is tough on a day when the offense isn't doing much to help.  Had the Johnnies scored right before half, that would have been a back-breaker.

I sort of figured BU was going to need to be great (I finally made a correct pick in pick 'em!) in order to win.  Certainly didn't expect them to be shutout.

Hopefully they can re-group and closeout the rest of the year....losing to SJU last year led to a solid playoff run, so I'm fine with a repeat of that.

Sounds like a great game over the weekend for SJU. It appears they stepped up against a very good Bethel team and are a legit contender on the National seen.

I'll start out my Johnnie/Tommie week behind by at least a TD because I have already been screwed by a Johnnie for this weeks game! My idiot nephew (who I love dearly)was a three year starter at center for Jays between 09-11, decided that this Saturday 10/19/19 would be a good date for his wedding in KC of all places! So I will not be attending the game this week because I'll be attending his wedding in KC. The only thing I can take stock in as that his best man and a number of his groomsmen are former Johnnie football players so, I'm guessing they aren't real pleased with my nephew for not looking at the Johnnie Schedule before setting a fall wedding date either. Going to be an interesting event though in KC as most of the family are Tommies so there will be a lot of Tommies and Johnnies on hand at the reception. Going to be a long night for the losing side listening to the other side gloat!

With St John's shutting out the #6 team in the country & Whitewater only defeating #19 Platteville by a touchdown, what is the likelihood that St John's will retake the #3 ranking they had in the preseason?

Good question. I guess it depends on how many voters look past the score and into the box score. If they even do a cursory look, they will see the UW-W dominance. If they don't, they won't.

First downs: UW-W 29  UW-P 12
Total yards: UW-W 513  UW-P 237
Rushing yards:  UW-W 376  UW-P   19

Yet the WIACers jumped on the UWEC bandwagon when the Tommies won the statistical battle by a large margin. I know the Tommies lost that game, but still, there was that.

You mention that the Tommies lost as if it is incidental information. Statistics don't matter if you lose. If you win, maybe voters take a look, maybe they don't. But I agree with the others. It doesn't really matter right now. There is room in this world for both St. John's and UW-W being very good.

Let's also not overlook that UWP is looking to be a pretty solid team in their own right.  They have some solid wins and could be the #2 team in the WIAC.  A couple "down" years removed from being a consistent top 25 team.  In fact they took the Johnnies to the limit if memory serves me right in the playoffs and was a bit of argument over whether or not a ball actually crossed a goal line.

It's a really good thing for your nephew that John passed away last year (and thus wasn't invited)....some of John's best lines/jokes were delivered when some new Johnnie(s) would mention their sister/brother/cousin/aunt/uncle/friend/etc. had scheduled their wedding during a football Saturday during the fall....he was so irritated that people would expect players/coaches to attend a wedding during the season.  His best response was always, "$hit, tell them that you will come to their next one!"

Jimmy Swoboda (sp?). Ran into a burly looking young man a few years ago wearing a SJU sweatshirt at a BBQ joint in KC. In fact it was the day SJU beat UWP in that playoff nail-biter. We introduced ourselves and had a nice conversation about SJU football. He mentioned he was an O-lineman at SJU.

Another John classic quote regarding requests to be absent during the season to attend a wedding - "are you presiding over the ceremony?"

I value the opportunity I had to re-connect with John well after my playing years, he is missed. It truly saddens me when I am in and around SJU to realize that I can't stop by and say hello for a few minutes (hours  :))

Speaking of BBQ's in KC any recommendations for good BBQ? I would prefer not a chain (unless it's a smaller local or regional chain with just a few restaurants) Serving of cold beer is my only other prerequisite. I'll be there 3-days so I can try several. Thanks in advance to all responders!

It's gonna be a heck of a game.  I've got a feeling that it won't be close.  We'll see a monkeystomp in one direction or the other and two groups of fans on extreme opposite emotions.  But no moral victories in this game I'm predicting.

Oz, if SJU had a kicker, you'd have nailed this one!  :o

Second, listened to the Johnnie network and got way too excited when BU recovered the opening kick-off. I thought a sure quick seven, but ended up hitting the upright on a field goal try.

I had a bad feeling when SJU fumbled, but I was feeling pretty good when BU stalled out.

Then the Johnnies roared down the field and put up six. I figured the game was over at that point, but BU kept fighting.

BU could have thrown in the towel there.  SJU looked unstoppable on that first drive.  BU made some adjustments, though, and hung in there.  The SJU receivers made some crucial drops after that first drive, too.

SJU corner made an incredible play on the ball in the second half on a sure TD to Carlson on that skinny post. Totally laid out, really nice play by him. Johnnie D impressed me all day.

I ran into a couple of SJU fans at Joe's KC BBQ a few years back. Really nice dad and son. Fun to talk MIAC.

KC BBQ:

Joe's KC - everything is great. I recommend the jumbo pulled pork (request it on Texas Toast). Solid Burnt Ends, good ribs. Great onion rings. Probably runs you around $10-15

Q39 - Burnt end burger is amazing. Burnt ends are very good. Solid all around. Onion straws are a great side. $15-25

LC's - over on the Mizzou side by the stadiums. Hole in the wall, but amazing stuff. Always very good. $10-15

Jack Stack - the priciest of the bunch, will be a 2 hour wait on Fri or Sat night. But if you want to experience BBQ nirvana get the "Jack's Best" with Burnt Ends, Crown Prime Rib (it will change your life), and your choice of ribs. Their BBQ beans and cheesy corn bake are almost as good as the meats. Their smoked prime rib is also amazing if you want to venture into less traditional bbq territory. $20-35

Slaps, CharBar, and Woodyard are also good options, but I wouldn't put them up with the ones above. Enjoy!!!

Avoid at all costs:
Haywards (heard a rumor they may have gotten their mojo back, but I wouldn't risk it for a one off trip), Arthur Bryants, Gates  ... all great 20-30 years ago. Not the same anymore

That was a sick play, for sure!  I believe it was Chris Harris (#9).

I have to laugh at this image.  Amazing catch by Alston, yet the guys in the background don't look impressed at all.  :o  Maybe most of them are BU fans, but Dr. Dumonceaux is in the group, and he's about as big of a Johnnie fan as you'll find!
