Nice piece on the Johnnie-Tommie Rivalry from Frank Rajkowski:

https://gojohnnies.com/news/2019/10/15/football-johnnie-tommie-game-amemorable-emotional-rivalry-for-the-ages.aspx

What great article.  It really captured the significance of the rivalry.  Crowds of 8,000 in the 1930's for the game.  Amazing.  It will be missed.

I found it most humorous when he mentioned that if your turn to page 27 of the 1958 program...

You all are sounding like it is already a done deal i.e the discontinuance of the St. Thomas/St. John's football game when (if) the former moves to DI. I have not seen or heard anything relating that to date other than those of you who have suggested it here. IMO, there is no reason why the game should not be continued. It has such a storied history and huge tradition as you all know and evidenced by even the old game program you noted above. Even if St. Thomas joins the Pioneer League for football, no reason why they shouldn't continue the rivalry. Pioneer teams play DIII schools often for a non-confetence game and I think we all agree that St. John's is not your typical DIII football program. Just my $0.02 worth.🙂😬

Woe is me!
After enjoying my favorite candy bar for over 80 years I find out the new and 'better' Butterfinger sucks........ but not as bad as the Tommies.  :)

Oooh nooo, not you too 57. Ironically, you'll be eating those words just like the "new and improved, better" Butterfinger, when your butterfingered receivers drop ball after ball on Saturday.

GO Tommies!
Just trying to liven up Johnnie/Tommie week while bemoaning the demise of

+K, Actually, the Butterfinger thing is news to me. That is one of my favorite candy bars as well. Are the old ones still available? I'll have to investigate this....
They do not make the old one. The versions of the 'better' one that I have tried including added peanut butter are nasty. It will be my own fault if  I buy one again.  :)  same as Little Caesar!

I think it's safe to say that the default assumption would be that the game would end, at least as an annual thing. I would love for it to continue (assuming Pioneer League) and see benefits to that for both teams but I don't think it's the natural conclusion.

New Butterfingers?  That does suck.  You can't improve perfection.  A Tommie is probably responsible.

A Johnnie walked into work and saw his coworker, a Tommie, looking particularly sour. "Hey what's wrong buddy?" the Johnnie asked.

The Tommie looked up with a forlorn expression on his face. "You remember last month how my Grandmother's sister passed on and left me $2,000?"

"Yes," said the Johnnie nodding his head.

"And you remember how the month before that her brother passed on and left me $5000?"

"Uh huh" said the Johnnie again.

"Well this month is almost over," said the Tommie with a wave of his hand "and....................NOTHING!"

Could be true? I think a Tommie is suing the heiress to the Butterfinger empire because he got injured when he crashed his car because he was staring a her while she was wearing only a bra as a top! I think Jackie Childs is a Tommie too!

I respect your opinion and you know more about the underlying atmosphere than I do. Understanding that is your "gut feeling" , but why exactly (what factors are involved) do you believe that would be the eventual decision?

Continuing it ad an annual game is sustainable, but if that were not to happen, then at least an every other year basis would be better than nothing. I do not bieve that it would hold the same significance if it were anything less than that.

The game notes are out for the Johnnie/Tommie matchup! Any score prediction?

Aside from revenue, I don't see it as a benefit to either party.  U$T would get nothing out of winning (ooh la la, you beat a D3 team), and a loss to a D3 team would be embarassing.  I don't believe there are any  incentives for SJU playing an out-of-division opponent (regional rankings, playoff selection) aside from ticket sales/media mentions.

I'm all about beating the Tommies, but the biggest factor is what is best for the program.

Indeed.
Recently Ferrero? bought Butterfingers from Nestle and changed the recipe that was successful since 1923. To be in tune with modern thinking they removed preservatives, hydrogenated oils and flavor.
The genius that came up with this was the same one who cured chapped lips by smearing fresh chicken shik on them. No therapeutic value but you don't lick them.  ;D

32-17 Johnnies.
That's 5 TDs with 3 missed XPs for the Js.  >:(
2 TDs and a FG for the Ts.

Based on the game note it appears they are going back to the "original" kicker. With the soccer team having an off day Saturday, I would have thought there would be a soccer player kicking this week. Maybe there will be and they aren't telling anyone  ???
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

The money is the only thing that would make this thing go. But, even if we were to assume they would keep it going for a decade, I think the money (read: interest) would fade rather quickly given the mismatch in divisions.

If the Tommies-to-D1 thing is as real as it seems, I'd rather see the rivalry go out with a bang in 2020-2021 as opposed to a fizzle 5-10 years from now.

Although, for what it's worth, over a (hypothetical) 12 year stretch of playing a D1 Pioneer League Tommie squad, I'd like to think the Johnnies would fair better than the D3 Tommies did against the Johnnies from 1998 to 2009.
