And then that bolded sentence...  Is she saying no institution has lost membership before this for the reasons circulated publicly or that no institution has ever lost membership for those reasons including St Thomas?  Almost certainly it implies that the public reason are not the true reasons.
I think she is implying that the publicly given reason is important to the waiver process.  If they were having trouble with NCAA compliance at the D3 level, then obviously that might hurt their chances.

Ah, you are probably correct.  Especially when you consider this massive shade thrown UST's way.  "St. Thomas?  Who dat?"

Quote
"When I read the newspaper accounts of St. Thomas' interest in going to Division I, and I had to look it up in the directory online," Viverito said. "I was not familiar at all, quite frankly, with St. Thomas, until the issue of their membership and their current Division III league was brought up in the national media."

I wonder if TommieMedia, thinking they had secured a scoop of an interview, accidentally stumbled on the institutional resistance to a UST move to D1.  Regardless, hurdles like this are to be expected.  All this article really does is shine some light on the degree of hob-knobbing and hand-shaking that UST must do to get to D1 using the longest ladder on the Chutes and Ladders board.  I think the odds are long for them, but not impossible.  I also think that next year at Collegeville will be the last MIAC Johnnie/Tommie game but maybe not the last ever.  It may take UST a little longer than one season to clear the path.

And this from the Reusse article today.

My impression since the drama started last spring has been St. John's people are feeling more angst over the Tommies' pending departure than does the St. Thomas administration.

And it's not because the Johnnies could be the next target of their MIAC partners. St. John's fits the conference profile. That school isn't going anywhere.

What's up with kick-a-Tommie week?  First it's TommieMedia saying "ain't gonna happen" and then it's the Strib saying "wasn't competitiveness that was the issue, you know."  Kicking Tommies in this week is our job.  We get these 7 days.  Out of respect for the long tradition of Johnnies pointing out that Tommies Suck, I would expect these nut shots to be delivered in one of the other 51 available weeks on the calendar.  This is our week.

I didn't see Reusse's comment as any sort of shot against the Tommies, fwiw

Just to add a few more comments to the discussion...you would think (well, at least I would) that the Pioneer League Commissioner would welcome another team into their league.  They have had some changes in recent years.  Besides, some of those schools came from DIII programs after they dropped down from the old DI (and some were more major college decades ago, although that doesn't really count.)  Also, to our knowledge, there has not been a problem presented like this before i.e. a school requesting a waiver for going directly from DIII to DI for this exact reason.  If she thinks such is not a legit reason, IMO, that is simply wrong.  But, perhaps as some of you allude to, she is just running some screens to smooth over the atmosphere (again, i.e. political correctness) until the formal process is concluded and the decision made.

Anyway, it just seems to me that if St. Thomas does get accepted into DI and accepts the Summit invitation, IMO, the Pioneer League is the route to go.  I believe that in a short time, they would do very well in that league.  Then if/when they became too competitive in that, would they be kicked out again? ;D  Just kidding.

I am enjoying everyone's comments in the discussions on this entire topic and am learning much.  So see, I am just one of those DBs , too! ;)

The Tommies are on to bigger and better things, like trying to join DI conferences that have never heard of U$T.

A tradition unrivaled...

Why the dead board?  ::)

Toms have had a busy week in preparation for their D1 conference blind dates:

Monday: eyebrows waxed and Botox
Tuesday: hair colored and scalp massage
Wednesday: manicure/pedicure followed by conference call among top level administrators that sounds like "blah, blah, blah, Boston College of the Midwest, blah blah blah, we truly are greater than Christ himself, blah blah blah, WHAT DO YOU MEAN THE COMMISSIONER OF THE MVFC HAS NEVER HEARD OF US?"
Thursday: teeth whitening followed by caviar facial
Friday: fitting for matching Stuart Hughes Diamond Edition Suits (Retail Price: $778,290) followed by haircut and manscaping
Sing us a song, you're the piano man
Sing us a song tonight
Well, we're all in the mood for a melody
And you've got us feelin' alright.

After the last 2 crappy weekends, it looks like ideal football weather for all the games in the north country this Saturday. So there is that.  8-)

Back in 1953 I interviewed at a place called College of St. Thomas in St. Paul. I still have the certificate of scholarship. At that time I walked away thinking they were a bunch of snobs. Can U$T be the same place? :)

I've spent most of the last few days in a tractor with my son helping my cousin harvest soybeans, aiming to fulfill all of the Tommie snob stereotypes.

Are you seeing many pheasants?  Iowa, I presume?  Is it really wet?

Last call for anyone who wants to join us for drinks at the Minneapolis Club tonight. Let me know and I'll send you the details. Johnnies are welcome, though don't be offended if I pass on a handshake. We know where that hand has been...

West central Iowa, Carroll county. Tons of pheasants and lots of wet spots out in the field.
