Yeah, Veldman can definitely sling it!  He doesn't quite have the surrounding cast to break into the top 2-3, though.  Can he topple U$T?  If he gets a solid performance from his defense, it's a distinct possibility.

The Tommies kind of "ramp up" through the conference during the final 4 weeks of the season - Carlton, St. Olaf, Gustavus and Bethel. BU gets a good look at them as they play the Gusties the week right before their game. If the Gusties do pull that off, I would think that the last game might even favor BU at St. Thomas. But that's 4 weeks off, we need to dispatch the Cobbers, the Pipers and Auggies first.

Summit League commish says an answer from the NCAA not expected until at least January.

Or as late as April...interesting.  That would really put UST in a bind I would think if the answer is "no".  I wonder what their contingency plans are...

Unrelated - I think I found what Pat's "unethical" comments are related to Bethel were about.

If it's that simple, then it's pretty (actually very) disappointing to me that BU handled things that way.  I'd be curious to hear the story from both sides.

Very interesting. I didn't get a chance to meet Pat on Saturday, was hoping to but I never reached out. I had heard some rumblings that there was an issue with press box space that Pat took issue with, but maybe it was something more nefarious.

Anyway, still not sure what that has to do with expecting Bethel to lose to Simpson week 1, other than sour grapes.

The game notes for the St John's/St Olaf game at Northfield this weekend have been posted.

Wait...free Dilly Bars and Raising Canes?  That's almost enough to make me go to a Royals game!

A school moving from NCAA D3 eventually to D1 has to be pretty rare even with a move through D2 first. Most of the schools I can think of that started out small, grew, then eventually moved to D1 started out in the NAIA, transitioned to NCAA D2, then went NCAA D1 (Grand Canyon, Cal Baptist, Houston Baptist, more?). The only school I can think of that originally started D3 is UC San Diego which moved from D2 in 2000 or so and now to D1, but that school was very massive by the time it went D2. Different from UST. The D3-D1 list has to be extremely small.

I wonder if UT Dallas, with 28,000+ enrollment and national academic rankings, will ever make the D3-D1 move.

Sour, but for legitimate reasons, if true...I think mentioning "unethical" was in reference to whatever happened, intended as a dig at BU's behavior. The d3football twitter account also had a related comment on a john sharkman twitter string about Bethel being unethical.

It is fortunate for both my weight and wallet that the Cane's on Lexington wasn't there when I went to Bethel.

I was going on the assumption that SJ was lending a '95 Honda Civic to Roste.

No, we (BU alumni) handle those sorts of "arrangements" through Hazzbeen.

I thought someone may have shaken their tail feather.  Done the Watusi even.

Hazzben told me on Saturday that he was just handling his Civic duty.

I suspect UST may be facing two fronts of resistance. First, and most obvious, are schools currently or formerly in transition saying to the NCAA committees, "Wait?  All I need to do is hire a D1 administrator and get some big donors to bankroll us? I had that and you made me take ten years anyways!"  They could have some pretty disgruntled members if St Thomas is able to avoid the time and expense they were forced to undertake.

Second, and perhaps less obvious, are current D1 members who are interested in protecting the exclusivity of the D1 club. Sure, they say it's hard to get into because you need to prepare, etc, but the real reason for the difficult path is to make sure being a D1 school remains an exclusive and valuable $$$ honour. If any Tom, Dick or Harry can get in with a good sob story and a few dollars then D1 is no longer an exclusive club. D3 is for the sporting little people, D2 is for the pretenders and D1 is for the special people. If it's easy to get to D1 then it's no longer special.

I suspect it's less about the actual merits UST presents and more about the consequences if the NCAA says yes.
