Out of curiosity, & with the help of the d3football.com site, I went back through to see how seasons in which St John's made the playoffs ended. As all Johnnie faithful know, our dear old alma mater ended Mount Union's 55-game (& all division winning streak record) reign, 24-6 in the 2003 Stagg Bowl. The Johnnies lost to the eventual national runner-up on 6 occasions ('02, '05, '06, '08, '15, '16) & had their season ended by the eventual national champion on 4 occasions ('99, '00, '01, '18). UW-Oshkosh made the Stagg Bowl with one regular season loss in 2016 & was the last team to do so. The 2007 UW-Whitewater squad was the last to win the Stagg Bowl with a loss earlier in the year (against Division II St Cloud St). Looks as if only 11 teams have made a Stagg Bowl appearance going back to 1998 & since '05 only 3 teams have won it.

Here's an interesting article. Thoughts?

There are plenty of good comments, but this one jumped out at me:

"I have loved football since I was a little boy. and I spent many years rooting for my beloved 49ers, but as a parent of an elementary aged boy I can say with certainty that he will NEVER play football or hockey.

Knowing even what little we know about C.T.E. and the consequences of repeated hits to the body and brain, I can't comprehend how ANY responsible, loving parent could allow their child to go out on the gridiron each week and roll the dice to see whether they end up battered, broken, and suicidal, like so many football players before them.

And even if C.T.E. weren't an issue, I have friends who played high school and college football who have spent lifetimes dealing with various injuries, such as trick knees, bad elbows, muscle tears, etc. from injuries they sustained in football decades ago.

Colleges and high schools refuse to compensate young men for injuries they suffer helping their schools make millions of dollars on their backs, and players alone live with the long-term consequences.

How can any caring parent allow their boys to be exploited so institutions can make money off players who will, in many instances, suffer for the rest of their lives?

As is so often the case in America, the profit motive supersedes rationality and safety and doing what's best for our people. What makes this situation especially egregious is that the people are naive, vulnerable children relying on adults to help them make the best decisions for themselves and their future."

Sheesh. That quote makes it sound like people don't have a choice whether to play the game.
We know the deal upfront when we decide to play (at least HS, college and those in the NFL).

Well, I played HS football, basketball and baseball along with football and basketball in college. Would I change any of it if I could? The answer isn't no, it is hell no. The lessens I learned in sports made me who I am. They taught me teamwork and gave me an understanding of how to overcome and persevere. Lessens that directly lead to success in business and allowing me to retire at 51, years ago. Yes I have physical issues that probably are from sports, but I would change nothing and no one that I know of that went through those battles with me would either. Not speaking for everyone, just myself and those teammates of mine that I know today.

The one part I agree with is how little we know about C.T.E., but it currently doesn't stop people from jumping to conclusions. Someone commenting suicide is a horrible thing, but is it only people who use to play football that comment suicide? Some of these people that have commented suicide, would they possibly been suicidal even if they hadn't played football? Possibly. These seem like thoughts of a overly protective parent and not completely rational. JMHO.

I played, and now have a son. My wife and I struggle with this. Full tackle started in 3rd grade. He asked a little bit about FB in 4th grade, and got our permission to play this year in 6th grade. They did a pretty good job with safety, but it's still an uneasy feeling.

Ive found this article very helpful.

The thing to keep in mind with the CTE stuff is the risk is what gets the clicks and views for media. It's also what gets attention in academia for being groundbreaking. IMO the doc who first broke it did good work and then jumped to unsubstantiated conclusions.

QuoteA recent movie, "Concussion," instilled fears that playing football will inevitably lead to poor brain health. Doctors across the country have issued a number of high-profile statements calling for a ban on football at high school and youth levels.

Enter Samadani, who is one of the nation's leading brain-injury researchers, holding the Rockswold Kaplan Endowed Chair for brain injury research at HCMC.

A mom in her early 40s with a passion for studying and preventing brain injuries, she emerged as an unlikely voice of reason for football coaches. She has given presentations on her research to peer groups and coaches associations, including in football hotbed Texas. She served on a panel for the Independent Metro Athletic Conference that replaced tackle football with modified flag football for seventh- and eighth-graders.

"I think, if your child wants to play football, you should let them play," she said. "It's a risk/benefit situation, and the risks are far lower than the benefits."

Really missed video feed today for the Concordia-STO game. It sure seemed boring on live stats, but in reality, it probably was. Cobbers run backup quarterback from mid first-quarter on. Not sure if an injury to Kragness was involved in that. One attempted pass for Concordia—from a running back. Appreciate the defensive shutout, but the Cobbers need to breathe life into this offense (sorry for restating the obvious).

Troll stays in Moorhead for the 8th straight year.
If the human brain were so simple that we could fully understand it...we would be so simple that we couldn't.

Congratulations to the Johnnie's on their 34th conference title!
