For rugby and against football?  Um, contact sports without helmets are far more injurious.  Can't help inlaws.

Our son is two. My in-laws are strongly against the football idea and it would be difficult to convince them otherwise. My mother-in-law was the one who sent me the NYT article. My father-in-law has offered to fully fund youth rugby for our son. One problem is that out here most of the competitive rugby programs are found at private schools. I think asking him to pony up for the $45K per year in tuition might be a bridge too far.

So the solution is staring you in the eyes, tell the in-laws to "put up or shut up", if they don't pay to have the kid play rugby, then they can't complain if he ends up playing football. I've been married 35 years and my in-laws have come to love me in my "straight foward-ness", because they know I mean it and am not bluffing. Neither of my boys wanted to play football, but my younger son and daughter ended up playing basketball through high school. I know it is because their friends all were. If my sons crowd had all played football, I'm sure he would have, too. My in-laws do not like guns, yet I have had very rewarding times with my boys during deer hunting time in the woods. It is my humble opinion that doing things with your kids is more valuable than getting them to play any organized sports. If your kids are in sports, then be the equipment manager or backs coach or whatever else you can do to volunteer to let your kids know you support them. And let them be themselves. I never played basketball in an organized way. I was a football and baseball kid. I'll stop rambling now...

If I grew up as farm kid or interested in animals, I would have definitely been 4H. Those kids always had fun in NoDak. Plenty of cute 4H girls involved too, which is what really mattered.

My personal experience was that I took more jarring hits playing football than rugby, but perhaps that's because D3 MN club rugby doesn't have the level of athlete that is encountered at the higher levels.  I felt like the fact that nobody has a helmet / shoulder pads on led to players not using themselves like a missile / battering ram.  There's no blocking, so you don't have to worry about getting blindsided that way, players have to stay onside, so you have a much better idea of where the opposing players are coming from, and you're required to wrap when you tackle, not just plow people over, as happens in football.

I was concussed just watching these highlights.  I think the moral of the story is that a football helmet actually provides some protection.

A difference with Rugby is they aren't normally spearing each other like in football's recent history (like how I was taught to tackle and block back in the day). Here's hoping that current rule changes outlawing head to head contact will help the head injury issue.

The picture may be a bit clearer later today with the Regional Rankings coming out but the question remains the mixing & matching once the actual bracket comes out. The CCIW with Wheaton & North Central, both appear that they will be in- does North Central get sent "West"? If Bethel Monkey Stomps UST will that be enough to get them in? These and many other questions we will find out Sunday afternoon.
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

SagatagSam

When are the regional rankings released? I thought that happened a little earlier in the week.
