I do chuckle, though, at the Lord's Prayer being a battle call.

Not knowing Aurora's history, I went to their web site and discovered that it, too, started as a seminary.

And welcome aboard 13.

Hey, art, I was just thinking of you. I follow a YouTube channel called Computerphile and they published a video I thought you would be interested in.

As a former player, the Lord's Prayer basically was a battle cry.  At the very least, it's when I knew it was go time right before we took the field to start the game.

This reminds me of one of my strongest memories of John.  It was my freshman year and we were playing Gustavus in Collegeville.  They were coming in undefeated at 4-0 and had been dubbed the "Cardiac Kids" because they had come from behind in all their games to win.  We were 3-1.  John was always pretty subdued before games and was never big on over the top speeches before we took the field, probably because he was hyper focused on the game and this was a big one.  We go through all our pregame stuff, come back in and John calls out who the starters are and they go up, as they're named, and shake his hand.  Then John gives a little rah rah speech, get's everybody together to say the Lord's Prayer.  This time though after every one says "Amen", instead of letting us go to the field, John SCREAMS at the top of his voice," LET'S GET THOSE F#$KER'S!!!!!!!  OH...MY...GOD!!!!  It was like a lightning bolt went right though me!!!!  All my hair was standing straight up and at that very moment if John would have said run through that brick wall, turn around and come back to me, eat this plate of poop, glass and tacks and then storm the field and beat those Gusties, I would have done it with out thinking twice gladly.  Needless to say, we did storm the field and ended up leading 21-0 at halftime.  Talk about a master motivator, he knew he had to do something to get our attention and bury them as soon as possible and that was it.  He never did that again in my four years playing for him.

As a side note, as well as that worked, we still lost to them 31-32.  Holding true to their form, they came back and got us right at the end of the game.  Gustavus went on to win the MIAC that year and was the #1 seed for the playoffs under the old format of 16 teams picked by the regional committees, and had a home game vs the 16th seeded team that had a 8-2 record.  They lost that game at home...to SJU.

Thanx Oz! I'll finish watching the build after I get back from a meeting tonight. Alas, I have an older version - 2, but with plenty of oomph for my rocket video project.

1987, interestingly Gustavus has only beat us twice since then.

Gary said on KOOL-TV's Coach's Show that we had not allowed points in the 4th quarter of our previous 9 games prior to Saturday when they made the decision to put in a number of seniors & backups!

oldsju67,
AWESOME story!  I don't ever remember John saying anything like that in a pregame.  Like you said, he was always very subdued.

I loved his tradition of calling out the starters and shaking their hands.  Each time was special, but I'll never forget the first time.  Gosh, I miss him. :'(

A tradition unrivaled...

I recall watching the end of that 1987 game from the hillside after getting off the brunch shift at the Refectory. The crappy thing about being a freshman dining service worker was that you had to work brunch and dinner one or two days on either Saturday or Sunday each month... which essentially consumed an entire day.

Did the west region committee do their regional ranking to give the best chance to their Pool C candidates to get in? There were a few other options of teams that could have been ranked ahead of Monmouth or even Lacrosse?

Not sure who in the MIAC you rank ahead of UWL. Definitely not UST, considering the common opponent of UW-Eau Claire.

Monmouth seems out of place. Terrible conference, 0-2 in blowouts against regionally ranked opponents. This isn't so much a MIAC thing. bethel and UST were out regardless. But Bethel, UST, Platteville and probably others would be more logical than Monmouth. If that's what it takes to get Wartburg on the top of the list though, I would be doing the same thing on that regions committee. It speaks to a major flaw in all of this. 8,9,10 aren't getting in anyway, you may as well load it with RRO wins for your Pool C contenders

Pat Coleman

But, did play two regionally ranked opponents, one a No. 1 seed, and has the highest SOS in Division III. A 9 slot in the West isn't a ton to ask in a year where no MIAC and only one WIAC school finished with one loss.

One of my favorite maneuvers is when folks like to slide in "terrible conference" to these kinds of debates.  Subjective characterization of a team's conference is not a criteria.

While Monmouth lacked a vRRO win, they did have the #1 SOS in the division (by a wide margin) and that really couldn't be ignored.  Platteville was never viable with 3 losses, St. Thomas was just outside of our final mock rankings, but got beat out by UWL's better SOS, results vRRO, and the common opponent results with UWEC.  And Bethel couldn't be ranked because they wouldn't be able to be ranked ahead of St. Thomas.
