Wheaton may well be the team that seemingly came from nowhere, much like UWW about 13 years ago.

The UWW comparison was in my head, too.  During their first couple memorable seasons, I used to rag on their boasting with, "it's not like you're Mount!"  Well, that came around to bite me in the ass. :)

A tradition unrivaled...

For those of you that haven't listened to the most recent ATN podcast, I highly recommend it for no other reason than Pat's bedtime story reading of the history of Mount Union's dominance.

This could be the next chapter where Wheaton rises and dispatches the purple powers--however, I would much prefer if the next chapter were the Johnnies rising and defeating the purple powers.

SagatagSam's quote has me thinking I should just play Piano Man the next time I want to play some piano on the pod. :)

Oz, you make some bold predictions. Do you know what happened in biblical times when someone who made bold public predictions was proven wrong? They stoned him to death.

Good luck on Saturday.

I prefer aggressive/aggressive over passive/aggressive in football cheering.  I reckon the Johnnie players deserve more than hedged support that will help me avoid some embarrassment on these boards.  It would be a shame if the Wheaton players hedged their play the same way on Saturday.  :o

I'm not really sure it's that bold of a prediction to say the Johnnies will win and that their performance will be good.  What do you want me to say?  They will be crippled under the oppressive weight of the Wheaton front four?  Ok.  They will.  It's a hopeless cause, the Johnnies suck and Wheaton's only challenge is Broc Rutter, who they have beaten already so is no challenge at all really.  In fact, why do we even play these games?  Stupid Johnnie supporters and their feeble-minded support for their teams.

Look, I understand.  Wheaton is a new kid on the block and a bit nervous about whether they really belong there.  Their supporters should be a bit nervous about what is to come in these uncharted waters.  But the Johnnie Nation is well used to the highs and a lows of good competition and big expectations.  We ride the bumps with a grin.  We cheer like mad on the victories and applaud the great effort in defeat.  One day Wheaton will learn to do the same.

FWIW, with all the resume jockeying, SJU has made the D3 playoffs 6 times in the last decade, while Wheaton has made it 5 times. Both have had one 3rd round appearance in that time. Wheaton isn't a johnny  ;D come lately. Absent the likes of giants MU, UWW, and MHB, and maybe the other two with Stagg appearances (UST & Wesley) the Wheaton recenty history is as good as anyone's.

Hey Pat, is that a stat you guys keep track of in any way? Who has been in the playoffs the last decade and when do they bow out?

I think you need to swap out Oshkosh for Wesley there.

Good call. Bad miss on my part. I try to forget that 2016 UWO run for reasons you are well aware of.  ;)

Nice to see someone in MIAC land is paying attention. Wheaton are not new kids to success and they need not bow and kiss the ring, their resume is every bit as impressive if not more so than St. John's in the past 10 to 15 years. St. John's has one Championship in the past 43 years and that is something, but it does not put them in the same company as Mount Union, Mary Hardin-Baylor or UW-W who have combined to win the last 14 titles and as much as some Johnnies try to put their name in that group they are not there. St. John's is in that next tier of very good programs and Wheaton is right there with them regardless of the spin put on by some here.

No one claimed that Wheaton should bow down to SJU, but some CCIW posters seem to think that SJU should just concede the game because Wheaton's offense is unstoppable and their defense is impenetrable.  Most of us are well aware of Wheaton and the success of their program, but as Baldino puts it, "it does not put them in the same company as Mount Union, Mary Hardin-Baylor or UW-W..."

Saturday will be a game between to elite teams.  We'll see what happens.

Technically, I believe that UMHB only has one championship as their 2016 wins have been vacated by the NCAA.  :o

This is another debate completely. UMHB won the game and the title and it was later given to UW-O. Everyone knows who won the game.
