St Cloud Arch Diocese has suspended all live services including Good Friday & Easter through April 13.

And weddings, funerals, confirmations, etc!

The MSP Archdiocese has not followed suit, though my family will be staying home.

Based on report I heard last night, it's on the way. Kind of surprised it hasn't happened yet.

Oz - how much travel do the teams have? Are they able to bus to everything to avoid the airport stuff?

Same here, especially considering the average age of many parishes.  I'm happy that the St. Cloud diocese is keeping my parents and MIL at home.

A tradition unrivaled...

fixed it for you. St Cloud is just a diocese. St Paul-Minneapolis is the only archdiocese in the state. Has St Cloud filed bankruptcy yet? I believe Duluth, New Ulm and Crookston have. Haven't heard anything about Winona.

Well, your parents anyway. ;)

Bethel just announced that all events until May 31 are cancelled, and that students need to come back and clean out their dorm rooms if they haven't done so. In another week or so when that is completed it'll be like a ghost town around there. My wife is already working from home. Me, I'm in week 5 of recovery of my right knee full replacement. I hope to get doctor's clearance at the end of next week so I can go "back to work", whatever that means, on the 30th. I hate to say it (because I'm afraid I'll get yelled at), but I've think we've crossed the massive overreaction threshold.  The same people are vulnerable to this bug as were two weeks ago, namely the aged and infirm.  And while we most definitely need to make sure we protect the vulnerable, I'm not sure global economic shutdown is the proper approach.  In fact, I'm certain it isn't.

And as I said at the beginning, I would hate to live in a third world country (or Italy) where the health system is suspect (or surrounded by the second oldest population in earth after japan.  23% of Italians are over 65).

Anyways, I'm going to work and I'm keeping everyone in my company focused on customer delivery. Because we've got to keep paying the bills and don't have the luxury of the media panic merchants of simultaneously declaring we're all going to die and it's hopeless while getting a pay check.

(Apologies in advance if I offend anyone, but shutting down the economy will prove far mar damaging that this bug ever will. I'll check out now because I don't want to start a fight on these boards. I may delete this post upon reflection.)

I run the AI and Analytics business in Oceania (Australia, New Zealand, tropical islands - we need more business there...) for a global IT company.  Basically a whole swag of tech geeks and PhD's who crunch numbers and do cloud computing for every industry and every purpose you can dream up.

Fun -- are they all working remotely now? (Were they before?)

All parish activities for the Diocese of Winona are suspended through 15 May.

Many are working remotely (many always did) but it depends on the customer. Some customers cannot support large scale work from home staffing. The IT network needed to enable online at home for secure access to applications like banking systems or other core processing is quite expensive, tens of millions of dollars for large enough companies.  Much greater IT capabilities than emailing and website browsing is needed for most corporate work.  Normally companies will have capacity for a limited work from home presence, say 15% to 20%, because carrying all that spare capacity for events like this which is unique and entirely unpredictable is a lot of money.  Money which can be spent on normally productive exercises.

Additionally, working from home with secure information, like customer credit details or similar, is much more difficult than just firing up the laptop and logging in. You must consider physical security as well. You’ll need a swipe card to enter a workplace - what physical security is in place at your home office or kitchen table?  If you print a secure document at the office you can place it in the shredder bin when you no longer need it. How do you securely dispose of that information at home?  Additionally, many systems are so secure and data so confidential that you can only access them when in the physical presence of the machinery. I have a few customers with this requirement.

So, like with most things, it’s not as simple as many think. And the most difficult problems are usually with the most valuable systems or processes. Difficult because they are so valuable and must be treated very securely.

So anyways, not as simple as many of the TV news personalities are making out.

And that's not even considering the workplace safety issues companies remain liable for when employees are working from home. Do the kitchen chairs have lumbar support?  Does the home environment have a monitor placed the proper height and distance from the employee?  Does the employee have access to medical assistance in the event of a workplace accident in the home?  Does the workplace (your home now) conform with workplace safety regulations in terms of smoke alarms, electrical wiring, etc?  Does any relevant collective bargaining agreement allow WFH?

All those things limit corporate capability to have people work remotely for any length of time (most companies let it slide for the occasional day at home because issues can be managed on an ad-hoc basis but when it's done on a large scale then they will certainly encounter workplace liability issues and that's a massive can of worms).  Again, things the reporters don't consider because they have never had to manage those sorts of issues in the first place.
