Here's an interesting graph.  I'm sure the people trying to balance this response are keeping a close eye on statistics like this.  The number of days by each industry until half the businesses run out of cash reserves.  So, assuming this data is close to accurate, stay closed this long and there's no money left for half of each business category.

Things in good old South Dakota are not quite as bad as the rest of the country (yet). Probably helps the the entire state population is around 800,000.  I too still have to trek to work each day as i am considered essential.  I do have to say that running a prison during an event like this brings up new and interesting problems.  Where to set up a quarantine area for infected inmates,  which officers will be chosen to watch these inmates (basically quarantined with them while wearing PPE).  will they get hazard pay for this task. Dealing with upset family members of inmates threatening lawsuits and even bodily harm because we shut down all in person visits,  the list goes on and on.  I am ready to get back to normal,  the only bright spot for us is that our industry is recession proof.  In fact we thrive during a recession. Everyone stay safe

The Netherlands is taking an alternative approach, herd immunity.  Essentially wrapping the vulnerable in bubblewrap and let it burn through the rest of the population.  They are taking social distancing measures, obviously, but not locking the whole country down in an economic disaster.  So there will be a test case for alternatives.  (The UK was following this approach as well until the article predicted complete doom and the UK changed course, as did the US.  The Netherlands have stuck fat, however, so we'll be able to see how it works.)

I haven't seen anything on world news about the Dutch, Italy and Spain are getting the European headlines at this point in time........

66k tested yesterday.  Apparently even more than that because not all states report negative results, some only report positive results.  But regardless, it looks like the testing is ramping way up.  Hopefully it gets going at a rate faster than the bug is spreading so we can stay in front of it detection-wise.

WTF Spain?  I would be damned if this happened in Minnesota.

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2020/03/23/spanish-army-finds-abandoned-dead-bodies-old-peoples-homes/

Quote
Fears were growing in Spain on Monday of a spiralling coronavirus death toll among the nation's elderly after military units sent in to offer emergency healthcare assistance and disinfect old people's homes found an unspecified number of abandoned dead bodies.

Staff are just abandoning people whether they have CV or not?  That right there is the biggest reason I think we'll see very different outcomes in the US and Australia over Europe.

Reporting in from the Ohio front line.....

1.  Since I usually travel 3 out of 4 weeks a month, this stay at home thing has been quite interesting hanging with the wife 24/7   :o
2.  As a beer/wine sales manager who covers states that currently have all restaurants and bars closed (except for carry-out), I have been laid off for the first time in my long life.
3.  The Ohio Unemployment website has crashed daily for the last 1 1/2 weeks.  It took thirty seven (yes I counted) times of going back an filling out the same information before I got my claim filed
4.  My children all work in "essential duties" type jobs so all are heading to work every day.
     Oldest son - pharmacy tech
Daughter - assisted living administrator (her current situation is greatly disturbing)
Youngest son - craft beer salesman servicing all the retail stores that are open and providing Ohio with the beer they need to survive
5.  Silver lining - I mentioned that I sell beer/wine so as for now I am well stocked with the "essentials"

Stay isolated, stay safe, keep on keeping on.

Thanks for the update.
MN not "locked down" yet, but as you have read many are working from home.

University of Minnesota is on the front line working on treatments. Some of the therapeutic drug combinations appear promising until a vaccine can be developed & tested over the next 12-18 months.

Springfield

I'm guessing you'd rather be there than at the Pen in Sioux Falls (for a variety of reasons). Are you hearing any feedback from Sioux Falls or Pierre on the challenges there? I also imagine the Minnehaha County Jail has to be a nightmare right now as well.

I live in Sioux Falls, so that's why I'm curious.
Sing us a song, you're the piano man
Sing us a song tonight
Well, we're all in the mood for a melody
And you've got us feelin' alright.

It's the entire game!  Number 409 this week.  Man, I can't wait to see what else is coming.  The OT victory over the Tommies in Collegeville seven or eight years ago had better be in the lineup.  Some of that great Magic(tm) against the Cobbers would be nice, too.

I wonder if they have rights to the 2003 championship game.

I was the Major at Jameson Annex (Max Security) in SF until two years ago when I transfered down to Springfield to take over as Deputy Warden.  I will have to say that this has been very challenging compared to the outside world.  There is no such thing a social distancing in a prison and we have orderlies wiping doors and common areas down almost constantly. All staff are required to be screened coming into the facility and we have shut down all outside face to face contact.  I'm sure you have seen the news today about the Women's Prison having a positive case and them the 9 minimum unit ladies that escaped last night.  It's a real mess up there right now. Sounds like most of them went to the reservations to try and elude law enforcement since we do not have any jurisdiction on tribal lands.  I've been in non-stop meetings getting ready for the possibility of a positive case at our facility. Good times  :-\
