Recruiting for UST will be a challenge in the first few years of the transition. For all sports but football, there are plenty of JuCo guys looking for a scholarship for year 3 and 4 of eligibility that will consider UST, whereas now they do not look at a D3 option. This is in addition to the usual pool of high school grads. JuCo players will be recruited for football as well, and with a D1 brand and a much larger recruiting budget, the recruiting scope will be expanded nationally, not just primarily the Upper Midwest.

I don't doubt that UST will recruit well long term...just wondering if it will be exceptionally bad for the next couple of years because of the time to be spent in purgatory, or if the school itself will be enough of a draw that they still get good athletes who are willing to forego championship / playoff opportunities that were the norm for the UST experience in the MIAC.

Well, there were a lot of players at Penn State who did that knowing they would forgo the same, although a difference here is that St. Thomas football players will not be on athletic scholarship in the Pioneer League if that is the route.  How much would financial aid via academic and other sources (community scholarships, special endowed scholarships, from churches, etc.) play into that for football recruiting do you think?
Quite a bit. I have a golf buddy who's future son in-law played at another Pioneer League school and he said you'd be surprised how much "non-athletic" scholarship dollars are available for good football players.
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

Thanks for the info. That is interesting, not surprising, but not all bad either.

Perhaps relevant to back home, perhaps not but there was a discussion on sports radio today where the manager of the Melbourne Cricket Ground was talking about what it would take to get people in there again.  Most of the questions were along the lines of safety and how many people can go in there, etc., as there is talk of allowing 25k back in a couple rounds. The MCG manager dropped one comment that wasn’t caught or followed up on (of course) which was they couldn’t even consider opening without a string of games at 35k-40k people to generate the cash flow needed to restart operations.

It will lead to some interesting discussions if that’s the case because the G is a bit unique being privately owned and operated by the Melbourne Cricket Club. About one quarter of the ground is reserved for club members only.  If there was a limit of 25k attendance then you could open the members only (as its fenced off from the rest of the ground.  Or vice verse). It would be an interesting bruh hah hah if only members could return to the football and general admission were not allowed until they could get sufficient numbers to support opening more of the ground.

But when the NFL talks about crowds again I wonder if they too are facing minimum numbers to sustain operations challenges.

Similar comments have been made by the restaurant industry, that they can't make a go of it at 25%-50% capacity that some government official has designated as "safe"

Well, the crap footy continues as the players build fitness but fireworks are still being lit.  Last night the Bulldogs played the Giants and there is a history between these teams.  Last season Bulldog's captain Marcus Bontempelli cheap shot a Giant's player and broke his larynx.  So last night the Giants sent that player out to the coin toss instead of their captain, a clear signal that playing footy wasn't the only item on the Giants' agenda.  And the game was a wrestle and shove match the whole way until fireworks broke out at the third quarter break and benches cleared.  A good old-fashioned fisticuffs is the next best thing to a good game of football.

We went for dinner at a friend's house last Friday (steak and lotsa wine, very nice).  One of the other guests brought sour beer.  I hadn't had one before.  Won't be in a rush to have it again.  Anyone else had a sour?   Did you like it?

My Daughter lives in Brussles, I will ask her to try it and let me know what she thinks. She hates beer but she might do this for me.....We can celebrate together on WhatsApp that she survived COVID-19.

To me, there is something about a sour beer on a hot day that kind of works! BUT, like, just one. I'm not interested in making a whole day of it.

I'm open to anything that isn't hoppy, which means Minnesota, the Land of 10,000 IPAs, is not my ideal bierplatz.

Since you gentlemen are on this beer topic, I have a question for you. Do you recall a beer several years ago called Elm's Beer? it was made in New Ulm and featured the head form of an elk on the can (similar to the Hartford Insurance stag logo). And if so, do you know if it is still being produced?  Thanks.

A beer right now in this 90 degree weather we are having in Michigan sounds good.🙂

D3, you're thinking of Schell's.  They're a fairly large brewer in New Ulm.  Not sure which variety you had, but they've been settinyg for a long time and are still producing.

Sours?  I can have one, though the wife and SIL's like them.  Just not my thing.

A tradition unrivaled...

Ah,yes!  It has been a very long time since I had the pleasure of "taste testing" that brew and while I don't remember which variety it was, that does bring back a couple of good old, fun memories! ::) ;D  Next time I come through Minnesota on my way out to North Dakota/Montana  (unfortunately, my annual trip there was cancelled this year due to this coronavirus crisis), I will have to re-introduce myself to that brew.  Anyway, thanks, Duff!
