With all of the other discussion, we failed to note that we've reached the time of year where the Football boards get moved back to the top of d3boards.com
Truly a glorious time, whatever else may come of this year.
As it should be, really. It is right and just!

I passed along your birthday wishes and she said, "Thank you and Happy Fourth of July" in return. She then said I could go back to "playing with your little Johnnie friends on the internet" with a smirk that makes me think she believes I'm some sort of nerd.

Having been paying much attention of late, but wish her a belated from Cindy and myself.
Everyday is payday in paradise.

Thanks, stanbob.  She says thanks and hello to you both.

Uh, wow.

https://www.espn.com.au/nfl/story/_/id/29418825/sources-chiefs-patrick-mahomes-agree-10-year-extension

Quote
League sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter that the deal is worth $450 million over the 10-year period and could be worth up to $503 million. The extension includes a $140 million injury guarantee, as well as a no-trade clause.

Quote
Mahomes will receive $83 million-plus in signing bonuses from 2021 to '23 ($21.7 million in '21, $27.4 million in '22, $34 million-plus in '23). Those first three years are fully guaranteed, sources told ESPN's Jeremy Fowler.

The Chiefs added $25 million in incentives over 10 years for Mahomes. Starting in 2022 and for 10 years running, Mahomes will have a $1.25 million incentive for winning the AFC Championship Game and a $1.25 million incentive for winning NFL MVP, a source told Schefter.

Please tell her that I'm torn on what's most offensive ... being called a "little Johnnie" or being called "your friend"  ;D 8-)

SUMMIT!!!!!

we're seeing more than the tip of the iceberg--

https://www.cbssports.com/college-football/news/ivy-league-cancels-college-football-season-for-fall-2020-will-reevaluate-playing-sports-in-january-2021/

The Ivy has consistently been ahead of the curve (weak pun) as they were the first to cancel their hoops tourney in March.  The article touched on the possibility of football and other fall sports moving to the spring:  ""Football hasn't been decided yet if it would be moved to the spring, but logistically, I don't know how that would work," an Ivy League source told CBS Sports. "... You can't move all the sports to the spring; the logistics don't work. The soccer field is the lacrosse field. The scheduling would be a nightmare."" (of note-- the Ivies LOSE money on football)

College Football America Yearbook publishes a top 25.  Anyone heard of this outfit before?  I don't remember it.

https://gojohnnies.com/news/2020/7/8/sju-ranked-no-7-two-johnnies-honored-by-college-football-yearbook.aspx

SJU in 7th
UST in 14th
BU in 23rd

Oh, UWW #1 and UMU #2.

I wonder if these guys will rank UST in the top 25 when UST no longer competes DIII?

With MLS restarting, and Dallas immediately having to back out after having 10 players test positive for COVID, I wonder what football will look like, if it happens, this fall?  Losing significant numbers of players, or key players to quarantine periods is going to be a real thing...makes me think that it's less than likely that there will be a fall football season...  :-[

Some talk of the Big Ten moving to conference only football games. Thinking appears to be that at least Big Ten Schools can afford to test players every day but a smaller non conference opponent can't afford frequent testing so the risks of picking up the virus during a game with a school from a different part of the US (and passing it along to another conference opponent) are not worth the extra revenue. Actually the smaller school/opponent also make a ton of $ for playing a game like that and they are going to be hit hard financially. Maybe the conferences in D3 that can afford frequent testing of players will play ball within their conference/region this fall.

It is about generating revenue and avoiding liability if you ask me.

Those tests are $100 a "pop." Since the test only shows results for that specific day, indeed, you can imagine how much frequent testing that will be required is going to cost. Moreover, depending on the availability of how fast the tests results can be returned (in some situations, that could be two days), that will be an effect that will have to be factored in as well. Schools will need to have the rapid test (that which provides the results within 10 minutes) available for game days to test the game officials, sideline personnel, chain marker crew, etc. Add to that the cost of the "temperature guns." I can see this being a real challenge (to say it nicely) for schools at all divisions, yet particularly for those in our DIII, even if playing only the shortened schedules.  This could all "blow up" very easily.  ???

Edited for typos. ;)

Not looking good for the big ten

https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/29435295/source-big-ten-moving-conference-only-model-all-sports-fall

I suspect the dominos are starting to fall. It starts with the big endowment skills, but if they see the risk, I don't see how the other schools (even those that might not survive if sports seasons shut down) don't start to follow the same path.
Any school or conference that has cancelled or delayed games in early September is just buying time to make a decision. I don't see things getting that much better stateside for this snowball to stop rolling. Death rates are only one piece of the puzzle to be considered.
I wish we'd been able to really get a handle on this early and be looking at smart returns to normalcy by this point, but that hasn't been the case.
