Sing us a song, you're the piano man
Sing us a song tonight
Well, we're all in the mood for a melody
And you've got us feelin' alright.

News about Carleton was unofficially swirling early this week.

I think you'll see schools like Mac follow suit in short order. In large part because of COVID concerns, in some part because they want to be seen as in lock step with their Ivy-ish brethren. Aka, we can't play football during a pandemic if Harvard and Williams and Carleton aren't playing!!

This might seem like a dumb notion to some, but I guarantee that's part of the thought process. NB: that's not me saying the Ivy's are making a poor decision, just that some will follow suit out of a tendency to want to appear as Ivy-like as possible in all things.

At this point I'm happy when I start watching a "NFL Greatest Games" game and I don't remember who won.  :P

I am not surprised by the move by Carleton.  I think St. Olaf will likely follow Carleton in cancelling off campus sports.  I have heard several on campus activities are cancelled, but nothing official from anyone.  Talking with friends in Northfield they made it sound like the town was trying to insulate itself from an outbreak.

I am playing softball along with umpiring youth baseball right now.  We haven't had any issues yet, but we receive constant reminders of masks and other precautions.  I am starting to see warnings about high school football in Texas.  A few schools have already had to shut down summer workouts for 2 weeks due to positive tests.

I am starting to have some concerns regarding the testing.  I feel like there is a large percentage of false positives with the testing.  Not sure that is the worst situation, but it definitely does add to the questions.

Spent the afternoon in Northfield today.

Lots of masks, even outdoors, and there is a ton of signage reminding people to wear masks ("Protect the herd, wear a mask" for cows, colleges and contentment).

With the factories and proximity to Faribault there is a legitimate concern that things could blow up quickly if not kept a close eye on.

I think most MIAC schools other than Carleton and Macalester would be pretty reluctant to cancel fall sports quite yet, however.  Other than Carleton and MAC, most others rely on student-athletes to show up for tuition revenues, and shutting the doors on a football season alone would likely cause a number of students to take a gap year or get credits closer to home for far cheaper. So I would be surprised if we see much movement quite yet-- but could see them doing it in September.  Still, they may make a general plan among the conference schools this week, however.

As I understand the rules for D3 football, until you show up for the first day of practice, you are not "committed" to a school. If my understanding is correct, how many student athletes will/might "jump ship" and go to another D3 school that is having fall sports to stay playing with continuity? Germinareo(sp) did that a season or two back. Are schools being reluctant to pull the trigger on calling the season to try to limit this kind of activity? As the season grows closer I suspect we'll see a lot of strange decisions being reached by both students and administrations, so much so that we all end up collectively scratching our heads.

Just came across this Twitter thread discussing some of the approaches and considerations for campuses in re-integrating students, based on conversations with various students. Reminded me of some recent discussions on here about what infrastructure and planning schools need to have in place

I'm much less bullish on the idea that there is going to be some great migration of student athletes moving from schools that have opted out of fall sports to places that haven't (so far).  I have lots of reasons, but a big one is that application deadlines for Fall 2020 are WAY gone.  The Joe G. transfer that you mentioned was done by mid April 2019 for the Fall 2019 semester.  Now, given the cash hemorrhage from Spring 2020 and schools really needing as many students enrolled as possible, some warp speed processing of transfer applications, aid packages, course and housing registration could happen (and will in spots, I'm sure), but I just can't see it happening this late on a grand scale.
