So, does this complete the process? It sounds official, but the U$T wind machine says a lot of things that sound official.

Looks like Summit League (which we all knew), Pioneer League for Football (which we suspected) and WCHA for hockey (which Don Lucia tipped his hand about a month ago).
Sing us a song, you're the piano man
Sing us a song tonight
Well, we're all in the mood for a melody
And you've got us feelin' alright.

Yup, it's official this time.  I thought the waiver was going to take a little longer to get approved even if it did seem like a sure thing.

WCHA for women's hockey -- nothing announced for men's hockey.

Summit League and PFL have both posted their welcomes of UST.

Wooaa. Didn't have any idea this was happening now.
This looks pretty darn official. I'm looking for some independent corroboration of this, on the NCAA site, ESPN, Pioneer Press but not seeing anything yet.

WCHA is women's hockey only.  Men's fate yet to be determined.

Congratulations to St. Thomas.  Good luck in D1.  I will greatly miss the rivalry that has been a big deal for me since 1974.

Glad to see that Patty Viverito has heard of us now.

I guess I'll need to re-find the Pioneer League discussion boards soon.

I still think football becomes irrelevant unless they start doing scholarships.  Pioneer league is basicallly D3 but the players can tell their friends they are D1.

Question on basketball.  How many of their current players can play at that level?

How does this also change life for coaches?  The pressure to win is different at that level.  If someone like Tauer who is a lifer has four bad years, do they start looking elsewhere?

I think hockey will be the easiest transition as the players at decent D3 schools have all played high level juniors and tan at least give D1 teams a competitive game.

Depends on your definition of "irrelevant."
The experts around here suggest that UST can step into the Pioneer League and go .500 pretty quickly. Competing for a league title there before long isn't out of the question. San Diego has won a game in the FCS playoffs a few times recently, but I don't think there is any chance a non-scholarship Pioneer League team is going to be any kind of national power. I think either the aim for football (nationally relevant, competing for a championship) changes OR the Pioneer League is a stepping stone towards a future application to the Mo Valley conference, where we'll get pounded on for a bit before hopefully being competitive.

They don't really have any Isaac Rosefelt's on the roster right now who are clearly D1 athletes, but they've certainly got a couple sophomores like Anders Nelson who could be a role player on a D1 team.  I assume they'll keep a JV program going during the transition?

Welcome, St. Thomas!

Thanks! I got my account setup over there, pending approval. Probably lurk for a bit to learn the lay of the land before diving in (unless a comment really irks me and I can't bite my tongue anymore...)

Appears you are a Drake guy? I'm an Iowa native and my bro went to ISU. He's already received several messages about future paycheck games, with repeated references to how close Drake played ISU a few years ago.
