I'm doing a little video project for Jeff Norman, SJU QB '76. He wants some DVD's made of the 1976 Stagg Bowl. I copied the video to my computer and loaded it up to Youtube if anyone is interested in checking it out...enjoy!!!

That really was a key block from the official.  I was surprised we didn't get a shot of an angry coach giving the guy an earful after that

1976 Highlights are up on facebook...there are 3 parts.
That #2 sure was a shifty one. Reminds of another #2 that handled the ball a lot on the way to a 2003 championship!

I didn't know much about this game other than who won, of course. But wow, what a crazy last few minutes!

Well done, faunch.  8-)

My Dad made me watch this game and I did enjoy it. I recall watching the running back #44 clearly. I was back then, a huge Gopher fan  but 'ol Dad sat me down and we watched it, I was 14 years old. Obviously, I did not know I would be an Auggie and would play against that team in red. The Gophers had Rick Upchurch and I was expecting that running style but #44 did a fine job once my Dad explained this was St. John's. The game was on network TV and a big deal in MN for sure. Keith Jackson always wore that gold blazer when he was broadcasting games so this broadcast team had that official look, made me watch it like I watched Texas or Nebraska back then. Much more impact than ESPN 3 or whatever channel covers it now.

As this was played nearly a decade before I was born, I had no idea how exciting the finish of this game was and that it took some Johnnie Magicâ„¢ to secure the win. Thanks for sharing this, faunch!

Thanks for sharing, Faunch!  Never gets old!!!  Actually, other than SJU building the 28 point lead only to see it evaporate, I didn't recall specific plays.... other than our final possession... Roeder's wheel route and Norman's throw were magnificent.  Schmitz recovering the fumble....and the ball sailing through the uprights as time expired....
Porgy  (Dan Dorgan) got injured in the 3rd quarter... he and John Kessler were alternating at RG prior to that....Porgy can be seen on sidelines with shoulder pads off, standing behind John....that Roeder could even run was a miracle... he had a knee injury, which was why Chris Boyd was starting at WB... Boyd gets hurt, Roeder pressed into service...and the rest is history!!!

Mount Union has now had classes for two days. And the school is still open. I think it's done with mirrors. 🎓 😷

Things are slow here obviously. Had a mini-break from work this morning and went back to last September to do some reading on the various takes when TomToss was announced. Fascinating stuff.

Likewise reading back in May as COVID-related speculation for fall football began to take hold.

Round 1:

At or above 98% of NCAA schools (all levels) will play college football games in front of full stadiums with no notable social distancing measures on or before _____[DATE]___________.

Since I proposed the game, I'll go first and offer a bold prediction of October 1, 2020.

The reason being is that I think the media narrative shift from "flatten the curve" to "we need to find a vaccine/cure" is losing steam quickly. The economic and social ruin that will unfold over the summer months will drive enough people to say, "Screw this, I want to live my life, and I accept the [what appears to be rapidly decreasing] risks of doing so." Save for a few schools with massive endowments to burn, college football is back fully by October 1 (maybe even before then). Sure, there are states and university systems that have indicated they will stay closed for much longer, but those plans are always subject to change, and eventually political pressure/public opinion will reach critical mass and force even the most resistant schools to open.

This was a fun discussion to look back at.
I think it's safe to say that this prediction won't make it, as much as the "Screw this, I want to live my life" part feels more true.

Yeah. I thought we were seriously turning a corner as states started to re-open back in mid-May. I knew by the first part of July that I was going to be waaaaaay off. People have been able to sustain the paranoia much longer than I ever thought. That's fine. I'll eat my crow. My prediction of October 1 was wrong. If it were up to me, they'd be playing, but, alas, I do not run the world, much less the NCAA, MIAC or SJU.

I do stand by my comment that it is abundantly clear the vanishingly small risk for anyone who is not over the age of 75 and those already in poor health. I think that's even clearer today than it was in May. The wreckage that we've created as a result of lockdowns won't be fully known for several years, but I fear that when we do take a sober look at 2020 years from now, we will hang our heads in shame and wonder "what the hell were we thinking?"
