We had some tough turf at Auggie for certain. The Metrodome turf was softer than our original turf at Augsburg, it was from the Detroit Silverdome.

The Auggie turf was horrific.  I played on it a few times.  The sliding pits had some nice razors on them.  When the dome covered the field you couldn't see a dang thing at night.
In the event any recruits/parents are reading this board, anyone posting here has not played any football in at least 25 years. The turf at Auggie is beautiful now!

I think I played on it just before they renovated everything.  I was impressed with the improvements to the campus when I was last on it 2 years ago.  I took a few classes at Augsburg and thoroughly enjoyed them.

I was on that turf one time. The high school football team my brother coached practiced under the dome prior to a game in the "Prep Bowl." If i recall the field was also used for softball and I can attest that where the bases were located there was exposed metal....and the turf was almost as hard as pavement.

Will be 40 years for me this fall.

I'm on the verge of turning 40 and have been feeling a bit old, so this helped me feel better. :)

Doctor told me once that after 40 the warranty has run out.

I'm pretty sure 4 seasons of college football voids the warranty.  :o

40 is the new 30 DuffMan! I am slightly younger than you art76, it's been 37 years since my senior year of football at Augsburg. I don't think the condition of the field matters, at this age you feel some pain. I don't care if it was D3, back in those days it was all about collisions at speed. Based on my tackling form back in the early 80's I would have been called for targeting every game under the current rules and so would many others. Guaranteed. I had a few concussions but back then it was just part of the game, you get your bell rung and would never dream of coming out of the game.

I never was concussed playing football - however, between high school and college playing I have hyper-extended my right elbow, broke a bone in my right ankle, broke a meta-tarsal in my right hand, cracked my left fibula, and hyper-extended my left knee. We all played with hip pointers, strained and bruised muscles of many kinds. I still cannot sleep on a hard surface on my left side because of broken cartilage in my rib cage. Thankfully, everything else seems to have healed up ok.

A little bird flew by my office yesterday. This little bird carries blueprints under his arm and wears a hard hat at construction sites around town. So the word on the street is a certain NFL team, that wears purple and is owned by real estate developers based in NYC, may or may not be developing some ice arenas for community use. There seems to be a current D3 university that is transitioning to D1, who coincidentally also wears purple, that may or may not be in talks with a certain real estate development company (F.A.M.I.L.Y) based in NYC to be a long term leasee of ice arena space for one or more gender specific  university ice hockey teams.
No word yet if a certain real estate development company based in NYC is in talks of any other athletic facilities developments for a certain university transitioning from D3 to D1 which may or may not have land/space restrictions in their current location.

An intense first game of the year for the Hawks as they played three first-gamers against Essendon yesterday.  The last quarter was a nail-biting thrill ride.

First half highlights.

Second half highlights.

Just an obligatory wrestling post--the Gophers' Gable Steveson won a national title at heavyweight last night.  He's arguably one of the best heavyweights ever.  His combo of speed and power is unrivaled.

This photo is from his celebratory back flip--imagine a 265 lb man doing that.

The Gophs also had a 3rd place finish from Patrick McKee and a 6th place finish from Brayton Lee.

That match was fun to watch live. I knew he would do some kind of showboating but whoa, that was crazy. He has never been challenged this year it seems. I watched only a few times this year but he sure looked dominant.

Mason Parris is undeniably #2, and Gable has pretty much had his way with him.  Parris has dominated everyone else and would easily be an NCAA champ without Steveson in the field.  I'm excited to see how Gable performs at the Olympic trials in a couple of weeks.  Gwiazdowski is a beast, and he and Gable have had some good matches.  Gable prevailed earlier this year.

I was bummed for former-Auggie Owen Webster.  He had some great wins towards the end of the year and wrestled well but came up short of becoming an all-American (never thought I'd root for an Auggie).

That feels like an arbitrary cut off for All-American.  There's no 1st team, 2nd team or Honorable mention, just if you're 8th you're All-American, if you're tied for 9th with 4 other guys you're nothing. I'd also assume some weight classes are tougher than others so getting 8th at 174 might be easier than 8th at 184.  In any case I don't think Owen has much to hang his head about, out performed his seed and pinned the 9th seed.

That's they way it's been for a long time, and frankly, I like it.  None of the "3 first-team QBs" bull crap.  That's one thing about wrestling that I loved--there is very little gray area.  You either beat your opponent or you don't.  If you're the best, go out and prove it.

Definitely not taking anything away from Webster.  Coming up short of a lifelong dream is tough, though.  He'll be missed by the Gophers.

Good for Webster for following his dream of wrestling for the Gophers. He had his chance to prove it against the big boys and he came up short. However, I think a better coach would give him a better chance. I am not sold on Eggum, he loses very good wrestlers to other schools and I am not sure he gets everything out of his team. I don't know that for sure but they all finished in the same range ranking-wise, not great, not bad but I expect more of the University of Minnesota wrestling team than the occasional superstar (Lesnar, Steveson, etc).
