Was it poor sportsmanship or just pure idiocy when some Oles dug a rather large image of an ejaculating male penis (did I just violate the rules by typing that?) into the field around the 40 yard line in the wee hours of the morning of the Carleton - St. Olaf game in 2018? Thankfully, no one twisted an ankle in the trench.

If you're going to do something like this at least find the 50!

The far better prank is to plant a grass or flower that will grow when the rest doesn't!  I saw a school where the band did it, and it was pretty annoying/amusing when it came back at the end of every season.  The next year for payback the other band used fertilizer spreaders to do the entire field with their logo.

Didn't make it to the 50...maybe it was a premature ejaculation?

If this had been in the UST MIAC days, I'd second mortgage my house on a bet that Faunch would be here calling for Caruso to be fired, and UST to be barred from the playoffs for that type of behavior...

In reality though - good of them to call out the crappy behavior.  Hopefully there are enough leaders in the student section to put it to an end. (the ref-shoving and taking a swing at a coach stuff - the Anthem stuff is low-class, but as Oz pointed out, to be expected from young kids making their own decisions for the first time...and the barriers getting broken should be a surprise to nobody).

U$T never had enough students in the stands, in any game other than SJU, to make running on the field an issue.

Perhaps, but I think the more logical answer is we never felt the need to rush the field for a win over (*checks notes)...Aurora? SJU rushed the field for a win over Aurora?

SMH

How many times did UST open a season against a ranked team?
Remember the Aurora game was the 1st game on campus in almost two years versus a top 20 team that we hosted in the 2019 playoffs...remember the playoffs??? (If you all recall UST was at home for the playoffs in 2019  :'().

It was seesaw affair in front of over 8,500 fans in which SJU reclaimed the lead late in the fourth quarter. (FWIW the Tommies drew a paltry 5,000 in their D1 home opening romp versus hoops powerhouse Butler)

Leading 39-33 the game came down to final seconds and a 4th and goal from inside the 1 yard line. The Johnnies D blew up the play and got the strip and fumble recovery, followed by taking a knee to secure the win.
Frankly i don't have a problem with students rushing the field following under those circumstances...I may have hugged half a dozen people in the stands myself.

Rushing the field after the Martin Luther and Bethel game was stupid and possibly brought on by excessive consumption of spirits. Any kid that took a swing at a visiting coach should be kicked out of school. I'm concerned that a negative light could shine on pregame tailgating if these behaviors continue. My impression is that there may be a fair amount consumption by students under the age of 21.

Anyway...have fun watching 1-4 Valpo this weekend...should be compelling. They hung with Dartmouth. https://www.valpoathletics.com/football/schedule/

Faunch,

Believe it or not, I don't hate SJU or spend a single second of my time hoping they lose. For the life of me I can't even figure out what your problem with UST is anymore? Attendance? The schedule? Was it your hope  that UST play a MVFC schedule with true freshmen and DIII kids and lose every game by 40? In all likelihood, UST will never play SJU in football again. That bums me out, but no one is asking you to be a UST football fan. I'm even fine if you hope they go 0-12 every year. But you go beyond that, in an odd way, like you'd be happy if UST's plane crashed on the way back from San Diego or something.

Everyone on here, with a few exceptions, understands that the people directly involved with football are by-and-large decent folks. The stereotypes about the student bodies are lobbed at each other in jest, and there's some good-natured ball-busting, but some reason with you, it's deep-seeded and visceral. Even at tailgates you'd just sit and scowl while everyone seems to be having a great time, regardless of the score. I live in Larimore, North Dakota and spend my free time coaching my son's teams and bowhunting, not sailing on Lake Minnetonka thinking of ways UST can irritate you. In fact, I've been to far more UND games in the last 10 years than UST games.

However, I WILL have fun watching UST play 1-4 Valpo on Saturday, and the rest of their PFL schedule. I think if they play well they might have a shot at the conference title, which is neat. I will also enjoy watching UST play Southern Utah next year, South Dakota in 2023, Northern Iowa at home in 2024, NDSU in 2025, UND in 2026, and Southern Utah at home in 2026. Those are some legit FCS teams and I'm interested to see how my school stacks up.

That said, I love DIII football for many reasons. I've played, I've been a fan, and just because UST left doesn't mean I won't be following the MIAC and the Top 25. The UST/SJU rivalry was fun and I am sad to see it go. Mostly because I made some good Jonnie friends and won't have much cause to see them anymore. I even texted with TDT over the past weekend.

I thought we had a newly minted Gustie dad in 2019.  Hard to remember.

Maybe he's trying to keep it under 3 games so he can get another year and finish up med school.

Didn't really think of that... not exactly the best forum for me to ask that question, eh? Maybe some of the Bethel guys have an idea... they seem to keep an ear to the ground on these things.

You'd think we'd have a couple of GAC posters given the amount of money and effort they have put into the program. They've always seemed to have been solid mid-tier MIAC with aspirations of breaking into the top tier since I've been around.

Pretty sure sowilson's kid graduated.

Yep. I was trying to navigate Gustavus's website (which is trash) and find a previous season roster. No way to get the rosters, but I found a media guide and he was listed as a Sr in 2019.

Takes some real dedication to have your kid graduate and still stick around these boards (especially if you were a UST guy)  8-) :P

No word on Veldman's ongoing status. The crutches after the Cobber game aren't a good sign. The backup isn't Veldman, but he has potential. He just needs to learn to eat it under pressure. His picks were generally ill advised throws while he was about to be sacked.

They have a solid RB and some nice receivers. They just aren't good enough up front to hand with SJU on either side of the ball IMO. They also lack height at the skill spots, which I think hurts them against the SJU length.

Your assessment is both reassuring and off-putting.  I worry about overconfidence.  I remember the CON game in 2019 where our heads (supporters and apparently players as well) were well past the task in front of us.

Holy crap, yes. Their website is complete junk. I'd rather they had an old clunky website with no flash graphics rather than what they have now. Not well designed at all.
