OK, the divisional thing is new to all of us, but would the following statement be correct?

SJU can clinch the Northwoods Division title with a win against St. Scholastica and if Gustavus defeats Carleton this Saturday.

That looks accurate based on the tie breakers: https://www.miacathletics.com/championships/fball/2021-22/index.

How bad do the Cobbers suck this year?!?!

Probably not quite as bad as it appears. Best receiver Gravdahl has been hurt, which has been a huge loss the past couple weeks. The QB is very below average. Does some good things, but turns it over waaayyyy too much. This is also the worst secondary I've ever seen. I believe both corners and both safeties are seniors, so I am really wondering why they continue to trot them out there as opposed to trying some younger options. The new offense should help with recruiting some better athletes out on the edge as well, so it may take a couple years to really see the fruits of the transition.

I imagine the optics wouldn't look that great either for a university to be pouring 8, probably 9, figures into their athletics department (football) for vanity.

Schools have been pouring money into athletics vanity projects for years. The American public or those institutions caring about the optics is long since past.

High schools do it in Texas while their standardized testing scores plummet  ;D

Fun fact: Every money that they spend in Texas on athletics in high schools they are also required to match in money for music and the arts.

If they spent $60 million on trombones and theater props in Allen, Texas, I've got some ocean front property in North Dakota to sell you.

So any official word on Syverson yet?  Regardless, Backes with a legendary opportunity.  I think the magic will be with him.

Pat called it on the D3 podcast. Broken leg, out for the year.

Ah, right.  SagatagSam said similar yesterday.  I was wondering if anyone had heard something from someone in the program yet.  We may need to wait for Football Weekly on Thursday.

Backes is a smart dude and is surrounded by a plethora of weapons. Question marks might be the excitement factor and arm strength, but you don't necessarily get those opportunities when you're asked to hand the ball off at the end of the game.

It'll be interesting to see how Saturday plays out. Assuming SJU takes care of business do you keep Backes and starters in to gel / do you let Cooper have a few extra series and sling it a bit to see what that looks like?

Were not kidding about an underclassman dominate CSS team (pretty sure it's a 2:1 Fr:So, Jr, Sr ratio). Some guys with solid frames. Take their licks this year (and maybe next), put some weight on, and they'll start going toe to toe with those in the MIAC.

Nothing official that I'm aware of, but the rumor is a broken leg.

Chris Backes has worked hard and has a lot of talent around him. Last night I was thinking about it and had good feelings, so take that for what it's worth.

Some of you (Duff *ahem*) will remember Ryan Keating getting hurt against UW-Whitewater in the third game of the 2002 season and Ross Denne came in and led the Johnnies all the way to the NCAA Semifinal and lost a close one to Trinity in San Antonio.
Sing us a song, you're the piano man
Sing us a song tonight
Well, we're all in the mood for a melody
And you've got us feelin' alright.

Not trying to speak for Pat but if he reported it publicly, it's likely true (dude knows a few folks "inside" the program). He has been trained in source based reporting!

The way Scott Bierscheid was holding Severson's ankle/leg.....fracture seems likely....
Backes has bided his time, paid his dues, came back for an "extra" season...son of a coach & Johnnie QB....quite a script for. "Cinderella story"...👍🏻

I'd been thinking all year that Backes has looked mor confident throwing the ball this season. While he might not have the zip of the top guns, the coaches know him and his strengths very well. Pretty sure they'll be ready with a plan that works to his strong points ... and he'll be fine. Seems like a great kid and his senior savvy will be an asset. Feel terrible for Syverson though, of course. A gamer.

Backes, from the limited amounts we've seen him, seems to know the play set really well and is a very good decision-maker.  He has been stepping in this year and the offense hasn't missed a beat.  In fact, he did very well against GAC.  His first pass was an 18 yard completion to Underwood.  His second was a 23 yarder to Alston.  He took the Johnnies 49 yards to the endzone in four plays to start the second half.  His third pass a 10 yarder to Alston and a two-play, 62 yard touchdown drive on the Johnnies's second possession of the half.

Syverson missing is going to be unfortunate.  But I have a feeling that Backes has prepped his whole Johnnie life for this next 3+ game stretch.  I think the magic will be with him.

That's only one of many similar chapters in Johnnie history. Jeff Norman, Will Seiler, Corey Stanger? We, as fans, have to trust the system.
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!
