Lol, I've never actually watched SJU's.  Plenty to do around the house this weekend (and I haven't even been pheasant hunting yet... GASP!), but I'd like to watch a bit of the game (before it gets outta hand  :o).

A tradition unrivaled...

Safe travels, wdavis. BTW, if you're driving up from MSP, grab a caramel roll at Tobies in Hinckley on the way up.

If I recall, the Whit coach came across a bit cocky before that matchup.

Yeah, he's the typical football coach that preaches "family" and "faith" and all the good guy stuff but it feels like just a pitch/show.

Not sure, but gotta give credit where it's due ... St. Olaf broadcast was stellar last week. Watched it on the TV and it was an impeccable Hi-Def image and very good camera work.
If you think the the football game was great, wait until you see the handbell choir doing their Christmas set  8-)
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

Have a great trip, Wdavis5.  The weather looks good for the weekend--enjoy Duluth, the game, and seeing your boys!

Thank you ROR, back at ya. My karma has taken a hit recently (deservedly so) as my main responsibility in here is to troll you fine folks and crack jokes. I feel like a bird that was set free, honestly.

Perhaps someone in Wisconsin knows more about the back story in this news story: https://www.weau.com/2021/11/02/undefeated-edgewood-high-football-forfeit-all-games-out-playoffs/?fbclid=IwAR2lF4DtyOB018D1_1xq9hHDIGo8mtp0RO9T8dkHohwETYZaRBqg80C5G2E

Ooh, juicy.  That's a pretty stiff penalty.  Like you, I couldn't find any detail via Google (I'm actually a Duck Duck Go browsing kind of guy).  But I did find the WIAA eligibility rules for football.  They could provide plenty of uninformed insight.
https://www.wiaawi.org/Portals/0/PDF/Eligibility/eligibilityinfoform.pdf

Penalties are not listed because "penalties vary depending upon the nature of the violation. In addition, schools often have established penalties or periods of ineligibility, whichare greater than the minimum prescribed by WIAA rules."

So, the triggers for ineligibility:

- 19th birthday on/before 1 Aug in the school year.  (Maybe this could disqualify the whole team if there were a 24-year-old monster playing RB, for example)
- More than one failing grade.  (Seems this would be limited to the player.)
- Poor attendance.  (Again, likely limited to the player unless maybe the school was fudging the books)
- Not enrolled at the school by the proper time (maybe this could cause a team-wide disqualification like the 24-year-old example.  Fumbled talent shopping.)
- Failing to meet residency requirements for the school district.  (Again, maybe flagrant talent shopping.)
- Transferred improperly (again fumbled talent shopping.  Could eliminate the team.)
- Violate code of conduct at training.  (likely an individual suspension)
- Must be an amateur.  Covers endorsement, awards, etc for all sports.  (This could be it if the school knew for disqualifying more than the player.  Maybe a pro-skateboarder as well as a high school football player, for example)
- Participating in non-school sports.  There are rules and limits.  (Same view as the amateur status in terms of penalty)

Interestingly, there is this statement in the document:

"There also are exceptions and other permissive provisions in some rules. Student-athletes and their parents should discuss all athletic eligibility related situations with the school principal or athletic director who, if necessary, will get a decision, interpretation, or opinion from the WIAA office."

My guess is that one of the rules was broken rather flagrantly (and I would guess one of the talent hunting problems most likely, but maybe amateur status as well) and the AD said "She'll be right, mate."  But was wrong.  Or should have checked with the WIAA to be sure.  And it wasn't until late in the year when someone raised it with the WIAA that it all blew up.  That would be consistent with the coach's argument that they did everything in good faith and got eligibility settled back in March.

Thanks for the tip, Art.  I love a good whodunnit.

Rod Sandberg is a Wheaton graduate and pretty much any Wheaton-forged coach that I've heard over the years in D3 (Mike Swider, Pedro Arruza, Neal Neathery who was Wabash's DC for a number of very successful years in the early 2000s) have very strong faith and family foundations in their programs.  Everybody's mileage varies with that stuff, and there may be some people or places where it's showy, but from the Wheaton tree, it's pretty genuine.

So good that they are often featured nationally on PBS around the Holidays. Maybe they should move up divisions or something like that  :D. Sorry, I can't resist...
