The Oles outplayed the Auggies tonight. Congrats to St Olaf!

Dang! If you would've told me the final was going to be 5-2, I would have believed you but assumed Auggie won.

I haven't followed things super close, but I'm assuming since Augsburg is #4 in the pairwise, they'll get an at-large bid.
You are correct, Augsburg will play the winner of St. Norbert-St. Olaf in the quarterfinals at Augsburg. I can't recall a year that 2 MIAC hockey teams made the NCAA playoffs so that is good overall for the status of the MIAC and it should give St Olaf a good boost to build their program.

I know back in the 2004-05 season SJU and UST made it. The Johnnies and Tommies played four times that year--twice in the regular season, the MIAC Championship Game, and the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

The last time two MIAC schools qualified for the NCAAs was 2012. Gustavus won the MIAC Tournament and UST got an at-large bid.
2010 UST won the MIAC Tournament and Gustavus received an at-large.
2000 Concordia won the MIAC Tournament and UST received an at-large.
1990 Gustavus won the MIAC Tournament and UST received an at-large.

Now that the winter sports are all wrapped up, here's a look at the standings for the Durenberger Trophy in the All-Sports Competition:

Tennis, Baseball, and Outdoor Track & Field Championships are the only remaining events to be scored.

I need to pay attention to these things, I can be too dialed into one team.

Any idea how the Johnnies 16 point lead compares the Tommies back in the day?

Perhaps similar enough for the CoL (Coalition of Losers) to come after you next.    :(

Here's the margin of victory for the winning school over the past 16 years:
2020 UST by 10 over SJU
2019 UST by 7 over SJU
2018 UST by 2.5 over SJU
2017 UST by 25 over SJU
2016 UST by 10 over SJU
2015 UST by 17.5 over SJU
2014 UST by 16 over St. Olaf
2013 UST by 26.5 over SJU
2012 UST by 20.5 over Gustavus
2011 UST by 13 over St. Olaf
2010 UST by 15 over Gustavus
2009 UST by 13.5 over St. Olaf
2008 (Corrupt link on the MIAC website, can't find the archived standings)
2007 SJU by 13.5 over UST (My senior year, *dusts shoulder off*)
2006 SJU by 3 over UST
2005 UST by 13 over SJU

Keep in mind these are the final scores. I'd have to go back and re-engineer the standings for each year to see where we are at this point of the season.

Wow. Talk about a streak.

It makes me want to read the MIAC charter preamble to understand what membership is about from the primary source.  Not enough to actually go look it up but enough mention it.  Say 30% interest.  If I crack 50% then I'll have to do a Google search.

EDIT: 45% interest.  Enough to look it up but not enough to quote it.  Given the UST kerfuffle, we'll have to keep an eye on how everyone treats their neighbours after having a read.

The presence of SJU is the only reason these margins are as "tight" as they appear. In most years, looking at the gap between UST/SJU and the rest would be a more relevant measure.

There are a number of years where the gap from second to third is quite small (2-4 points).

It's a big win for St. Olaf!  That program has seen more dysfunction than any other program in recent years.  In the late 90s there were concerns about having junior players join the team rather than local kids from the HS ranks.  Now the team is starting to see more international and east coast players.  It is something different in the MIAC.  St. Olaf seemed to step up their game when they played Augsburg.  The game was always closer than I think most would have predicted.  Beating SJU was probably the bigger shock.  Also St. Olaf is now the lowest seed to ever win the MIAC tournament.  That is mostly due to the fact I think it used to be only the top 5 teams.  It is great seeing the MIAC get 2 teams in the tournament.  The MIAC and western teams in general have not gotten the respect they deserve from the NCAA come tournament time.

As for the All-Sports Competition standings the men's was always closer than the women's standings.  The more sports a school participates in the more points it accumulates.

SagatagSam

There are only three schools in the MIAC that field a team for all eleven sports in the All-Sports Competition: Gustavus, St. Olaf, Saint John's

There are another six that have ten of the eleven: Carleton (Hockey), Concordia (Swimming & Diving), Bethel (Swimming & Diving), Macalester (Hockey), St. Scholastica (Swimming & Diving), and Hamline (Golf)

Augsburg is the only one that sponsors only nine of the eleven (missing Swimming & Diving, and Tennis)

Saint Mary's is the only one that sponsors only eight of the eleven MIAC sports (missing Golf, Football, and Swimming & Diving)

Last week I had lunch with a business associate and friend for over 2 decades and he mentioned he was going to send me a gift. He is a former SJU football player and his 2 sons also played for the Johnnies.

Yesterday in the mail I received "A Legacy Unrivaled" The Story of John Gagliardi with a personal note from the author Boz Bostrom. What a great gift!

It was also signed by John as is my copy of "The Sweet Season." That book was also given to me by that same business associate/friend several years ago. I am sure I will enjoy this book just as much.

Thanks again SamWill47SJU. (He posts here once in a blue moon) As you might guess he was a linebacker, and somehow he talked his wife into naming their 2 sons Sam and Will.  8-)
