Texas Ole

Good job Auggie!  I watched the Ole game last week.  That was a different St. Olaf team than I saw earlier in the season.  Hopefully the respect for the MIAC continues to grow.  Didn't realize the WIAC no longer had an AQ spot for hockey.

Yesterday morning I began reading "A Legacy Unrivaled" The Story Of John Gagliardi by Boz Bostrom. Other than a quick sandwich I couldn't put it down and finished about 5 hours later in early afternoon.

What I expected was there with very interesting historical facts and stories. What I did not expect and did not know was the incredible humor that John possessed. I was laughing consistently all through the book. My wife a couple times came in to ask me "what I was laughing about now?"

John's wife: "John, I know you love football more than me." John: "Yes, but I love you more than basketball."  Wonderful couple.

In the forward Lou Holtz mentioned that he though the reader would be a better person for having read this book. I think that's true. It translates a sense of knowing John and perhaps being one of his students and learning some life lessons through his unique teaching style.

The other thing that surprised me was what a wonderful writer Boz Bostrom is. I am sure some of you know him personally and have read this book. Some of you probably even took John's class at SJU and have memories of that.

Anyway, what a good read. You don't have to like D3 football or even sports at all to appreciate John and this book. Thank you SamWill47SJU for the gift.

John was hilarious.  Whenever I get together with teammates, we undoubtedly rehash some of his jokes.  ;D

I think its stories like these that shows how the national media missed a lot of what made John great. The overarching narrative was "he had unconventional methods and won lots of games and was nice to his players." And, while it is nice that he got as much press as he did, it only scratched the surface. Maybe that's what the national media is there for--to give you a taste and then you dig further.

Sing us a song tonight
Well, we're all in the mood for a melody
And you've got us feelin' alright.

Glad you enjoyed it BDB!  Thanks for bringing me back to this chat room as it has been YEARS! Go Johnnies!

Lots of talk about hockey on this board. I live in Alliance, Ohio and therefore did not know what it was. Our major sport here is league bowling on Mondays and Thursdays.
A while back, I got a response from some of you. I want to, at this time, thank you for your comments.
Sagatagsam gave me directions to a place in Pittsburgh where this is played. 57Johnnie informed me that hockey is like polo on ice without the horses. Both very helpful. I'm sorry I incurred the wrath of that Oz guy in Australia. Did not mean to do that!
Anyhoo, thank you so much for the enlightenment. This is my favorite board so I just want to know what's going on!

Sincerely yours,

Oh. One more thing. What's a "puck"? ???

That's OK - I've heard that you tend to forget things! ;D

(I'm a mere lad of 73, but my memory ain't what it used to be - or at least I think I remember that. ;))

That is a legitimate question Mr. MUC57. Most of the time the "puck" is hard to see on a TV screen and on the D3 hockey broadcasts even more challenging to see. So from your perspective, I understand why you question the existence of this object. Players on the ice, the referees, the commentators, and of course the TV viewer lose track of the puck a lot during a game. A highly valued piece of hard rubber and everybody wants it. The puck bounces around a lot; off the boards, sticks, pipes, and crossbars in angles that have physicists baffled.

I think Puck is a mischievous sprite from 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'.

Thanks for your insight on the visual complexities of the hockey puck.
I live in Alliance, Ohio. I live alone. I'm old. That's 3 strikes against me on knowing "stuff". Your info will afford me a better understanding of "hockey".
I feel that now I can converse with people from Minnesota on this topic.
Again, thank you for your help.

Truly yours,

One more thing. So that I can get a better perspective, how does a "puck" compare in size to, say, a bowling ball!  ???  ;D

The Puck can also roll on the ice like a bowling ball but not for long. You are on to something though, if you give a good hockey player several of these pucks to shoot down the lane at bowling pins, these pucks would probably knock down a couple of pins maybe three per puck. Try this same shot with a bowling ball and with a good wrist shot the hockey player could probably almost score a strike, maybe even a spare.

The Augsburg hockey team is going to the Frozen Four in Lake Placid after a 4-1 win over St. Norbert last night. Representing the MIAC as a serious contender the Auggies play #1, Adrian, on March 25th.

Great season for the Auggie puck team. Adrian was hell bent the best D#3 team this year and deserved to be the champs. Auggie wasn't going to beat that squad while giving up 2 to 1 shots on goal.

We still have a couple D#1 teams in play. Minnesota is in the regional final today (vs Western Michigan 3pm ESPN2) and Minnesota State is already in the Frozen Four. Unfortunately SCSU and UMD were bumped off.
