It's going to be messy because there really isn't precedent for this that I can think of. It's going to be professional, but developmental, junior ages, but minor league, football, but with all the popularity and public support and most of the trappings of the NFL. That simply doesn't exist in any other sport.

Minor league baseball, hockey, soccer, basketball... all are monetarily flawed, only locally popular, modestly supported, and mostly a financial dead end. D1 Football, and Basketball, are going to be mostly age limited, monetarily lucrative, nationally popular, and a dead end only so far as athletes will most likely age out (eligibility).

I will be interested to see how the NFL will want the relationship to work. It's a luxury right now that the NFL has a feeder league that costs them nothing, but they also have little to no control over. But if both college and the NFL are professional leagues, with big money tv contracts, big money player and coach contracts, it will be interesting to see how they divvy up the talent.

Colleges aren't going to want their stars to draft out after a year or two, and they might have the money to prevent it. College teams are going to want more and more television exposure to drive up the package prices, and the NFL isn't going to want them playing on Monday, Thursday and Sunday. Right now it's all chummy and cozy, but the more money colleges have at risk, the less interest they are going to have in being constrained in both players and tv exposure.

Do I expect any of this to come into play any time soon? Of course not. But over the next decade or two? These entities are going to butt heads in an interesting way, and I think it's going to be fascinating to watch.

All very good points.  And agree....this will likely play out in substance over the next 10-15 years, but I could see certain things accelerating.

Stating the obvious, but these changes will create an even bigger gap between the general students, and football players.  And running football programs like this will be so disconnected from the true mission of the universities.   At what point do a couple of schools decide to "tap out" and de-emphasize football?

Another D3 Podcast has dropped. Hardin-Simmons and Bethel were the two highlighted programs this time around. Very interesting to hear that BU has 28 of their top 30 returning from last year. There's a lot of promise in the upcoming season for BU fans.

Take a listen here: https://www.d3blogs.com/d3football/2022/08/21/atn-podcast-307-in-camp-and-ready-to-rock/?fbclid=IwAR0p3Uy1V0NDXeAIHf2BpgEx3cw59-rek7LVN_h_Ak6MzpWWADi3IWv12D8

Looks like the Royals have loaded up for Roste's swan song, adding an all-MIAC WR from the Pipers. Along Joey Kidder that ought to make things interesting.

The race for the MIAC is on. Bethel have certainly picked a good year to return everybody.  It will be a big advantage playing this game at home with a nearly complete squad of returning starters.  In the third game of the year.  The kinks had better be worked out on the streaming or I may have a frustration episode.

Last year, lockdowns, #TEXIT, uncertainty.  This year, game on.

The conference championship game will one hell of the show these two teams win out from week four.

Is St John's charging for the streaming again?

Dropped #2 off at Concordia today for his first year. Crazy how time flies. He was born in September of 2003 and the two of us listened to the Johnnies win a national championship that fall.

Will move #1 in at SJU for his senior year next weekend. I am getting old.

Thanks for reminding me! ;D
WELCOME TO THE MACHINE!

I have no inside knowledge, but I would bet on it.

In my search to find if we'll need to subscribe to the portal again for football (my guess is yes - but it wasn't available until days before kickoff last year) I found the online ticketing portal.  Who was asking about buying tickets?  Anyways, here's the link.

Hey all, I'm probably gonna start up another fan poll again this year. As always, shoot me a message if you're in interested in participating. In years past we've always focused on "West" teams. However, with new regional realignment I think we'll just focus on Region 6 teams for the fan poll. Let me know if you want in.

Much appreciated!

Sorry, but what is a fan poll? Do you mean a pool?

Preliminary SJU roster is posted: https://gojohnnies.com/documents/2022/8/16/22sjufootballroster.pdf?path=football

Big question: who's is #2 at QB? Last year we were pretty set at 1, 2 and 3. With Cooper Downs transferring there appears to be a major hole.

I just noticed one of our first U$T transfers: Kristoff Kowalkowski. Not a big surprise...he's from Sartell via Tontino Grace. I believe his dad is a Johnnie.

How has Poppa Kowalkowski not found his way to this board yet?  He was tons of fun on gopherhole pretending to be a neutral third party that was just so impressed with Kristoff and hated all the Gopher QB recruits.  He's also taking shots at the Tommies on twitter on the way out.  https://twitter.com/DrKowalkowski/status/1557853600319242240
I'm going to send him the link here, would be great entertainment.
I took his shot as more directed at D3 (and therefore his own kid and SJU accidentally) considering Kristoff didn't even see the field here last year. Should have 4 years of eligibility unless somehow a redshirt needs to be declared and not just default based on playing < 4 games. Seems like a smart kid and all indications are the guys on the team liked him well enough. Shame his father (former SJU player, I guess?) is such a tool.
Tommyboy has been back at it on Gopherhole this week, too funny not to share.  I hope this thread goes on for another 4 years.  https://gopherhole.com/boards/threads/kristoff-kowalkowski-signs-with-st-thomas.99583/page-4#post-2518579
