A rollercoaster ride for anyone scoreboard watching.

A strong Bethel first half looked like they would easily cover, but Gustavus came back in the second half. A 48-yard pitch and catch from George Sandven to Matthew Carreon for a touchdown to cap a 3 play, 72 yard drive in with just under 6 minutes to play put the Gusties within three and beat the 5.5 spread.

St. Olaf seemed set to keep Augsburg just out of reach to cover the 5.5 spread, but Augsburg's DJ Monroe punched it in from 2 yards out with 2:21 to play and Nat Wangensteen kicked the extra point to beat the spread by half a point.

Hamline led 42-27 over St. Scholastica at the end of the third quarter, but the Saints came roaring back, scoring 16 unanswered points on three possessions in the fourth quarter. Kyle Oswald kicked a 26 yard field goal with 8 seconds remaining to not only cover the spread, not only secure the upset, but also to claim its first conference win as a member of the MIAC.

The Johnnies started cold, but looked like they could cruise beyond the spread with a 28-point second quarter and another touchdown in the third quarter to make it a half point shy of covering, but Concordia came roaring back to not only easily beat the spread, but almost win the game outright as Cooper Mattern connected with Dawson Schaffer for a touchdown with 53 seconds remaining to make it a one score game 35-28.

North Central jumped out to a 20-0 lead in the first half, and Wheaton came back to keep the game within a single possession for a portion of the second half. North Central scored with 3:02 to play to win by 13, but not enough to cover the 14.5 point spread.

Marist scored a touchdown with 1:27 to play to make the score 38-24 and the Tommies fumbled on its next offensive play, and the Red Foxes beat the spread.

I think we all learned Saturday there's a whole lot more football to be played in the MIAC.

I think that was the one resounding gong across the league.

Since I love the pick 'ems, using AO's spreads as a guide is appropriate--there was only one game (Macalester (+10.5) at Carleton) where the favored team covered the spread. In all other games, the underdog beat the spread, and we even had one super dog win outright in the final seconds (St. Scholastica (+8.5) over Augsburg). I think that's an indicator of parity that none of us were anticipating.

A bright spot from the Cobber game was seeing some new faces make big contributions at the WR position (Darian Washington, Dylan Wheeler).  Since we don't appear to be able to run the football, we need a strong receiving corps.

WR, Micah Niewald from BU made the D3 Team of the Week with 15 catches against Gustavus.
K, Hugo Cifuentes from BU scored 12 points with his foot against the Gusties.

There are St. Olaf and River Falls players named as well - read it all here:

Niewald's continued emergence is awesome for Bethel. Moving him around the formation this year has been really effective, he was strictly a slot guy last year. It makes it a lot harder to concentrate coverage on Kidder when Niewald is such a great route runner. Was next to his dad during the SJU game, which was really fun, he was a good guy.

I was waiting for some type of official announcement from the college but since it was mentioned in Patrick Reusse's article this morning I guess it's fine to discuss now. On Oct. 15th, Carleton will launch a $1M endowed fund for its football program. In a halftime ceremony honoring the '92 MIAC football champs, the fund and the field at Laird Stadium will be named after Coach Sullivan. Near as I can tell, this endowed athletics fund would be the first of its kind in D3. Now an extra ~$20,000/year in the budget likely isn't earth shattering, but Journell wants to play non-conference games on the east and west coast (series with Pomona already scheduled) and that extra money will certainly help defray travel expenses. Maybe an international trip in the spring becomes an option? Journell has energized the alumni and people are excited.

Curious to see if any other MIAC schools follow suit

Not going to lie--I did not expect to see something like this come out of Carleton. Good for them! Whatever keeps growing the MIAC and making it stronger, I'm all for it!

100% driven/funded by football alumni. I've also heard rumors that they're planning to build a new indoor football facility. I figured that was likely just a pipe dream until I saw that Gustavus video someone posted last week which showcased their own indoor facility. Who knows, but exciting times to be sure. Beat Olaf.

It actually surprises me that no other program has a football dedicated endowment of some sort. It seems like there are funds put aside for everything else under the sun. Kudos to Carleton.

Doesn't SJU have the Gagliardi Legacy Fund? (or something similarly named?)

Yes, though I am not exactly clear on the sepcifics of the fund, and I can't seem to quickly find any info online.

Yes, though I am not exactly clear on the specifics of the fund, and I can't seem to quickly find any info online.

Found a little something:

The John Gagliardi Legacy Fund, which is co-chaired by Tim Healy '87 and Tom Wicka '90, will include endowment dollars for the long-term stability of the football program, as well as address the program's immediate needs.

It looks like the target for the Gagliardi Legacy Fund was $3 million. I never heard if that goal was achieved.

Interesting penalty that I don't think I've ever seen called before (thought I am sure the infraction happens with regularity): SJU was penalized for having two players with the same number on the field at the same time.

It happened while simultaneously returning a kick for which a fair catch had been called, so the line had to be drawn somewhere.
