Interesting penalty that I don't think I've ever seen called before (thought I am sure the infraction happens with regularity): SJU was penalized for having two players with the same number on the field at the same time.

Schools try hard to make sure their multiple numbers at least play on opposite sides of the ball, but special teams is a variable there.

It happened while simultaneously returning a kick for which a fair catch had been called, so the line had to be drawn somewhere.

I think we had 10-12 penalties on Saturday...maybe just trying to get one in every penalty category before the end of the season.

I know there's been some mention on these pages regarding TOP (Time of Possession). On Saturday the Johnnies lost that battle but hung on for the win. One stat that was a little concerning was the number of plays. If I recall the Johnnies ran about 60 plays and the Cobs ran about 84. TOP combined with 24 more plays and the Johnnies giving away a 28 point lead add up to the Jays inability to run the ball and put away an opponent.

I really don't have a clue what it takes to be an effective offensive line. All I know is that the SJU front 5 has not won the battle at the point of attack this season. I'm not saying that to be disrespectful or call out anyone...but we got pushed around on Saturday. If that keeps happening we can forget about playoffs. Even if we make it into the tournament our participation will be short lived.

No doubt.  Look no further than Syverson getting stepped on by the center being driven back by a DT.

Converting 60 yard pass plays for touchdowns will effectively reduce TOP, number of plays, and provide points, which is really all that matters. Also, Johnnies have played some top tier defensive fronts so far, including Concordia. Johnnies won. Each game presents its own challenges and each team always has something that can be improved.
If the human brain were so simple that we could fully understand it...we would be so simple that we couldn't.

Yeah, but if the fair catch happens inside the 25 yard line, I've always understood the simultaneous number rule doesn't apply! I continue to be exasperated by officials who can't seem to grasp the simple rules of football!

Here's a fun wrinkle involving the jersey number rule: let's say SJU realized the double numbers before sending them out on the field and decide to do a quick switcheroo with another guy on the sidelines. If they send someone out with a changed number and fail to report that to the referee, it's a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.

Now, I'm not sure how you would ever catch that as a ref, but technically it is a penalty.

It's one of those "game changer" no-calls if it gets missed.

Hey, if it's a penalty then it's a penalty. Not sure what your issue is with me.
