Get this stuff out of here.  This is now the wind instrument thread.

Sophisticated people are talking, Jake. Save your jock sports ball stuff for the weekend.

What instrument(s) do you think Greg Thomas played? Can I get any money on Greg playing jazz flute? I'm giving 8/1 odds.
Sing us a song, you're the piano man
Sing us a song tonight
Well, we're all in the mood for a melody
And you've got us feelin' alright.

So... The winner of BU/SJU moves to second and the loser falls behind the WIAC teams.  It looks like Region 6 will get two at-large bids, depending on how the other Region's auto-bids work out.  But the middle of the Region 6 ranking looks to my eyeball to be the strongest of the six regions by a long way.

The games:

1. Linfield plays L&C.  Linfield will retain top rank.  Autobid.
2. SJU against BU.  I pick SJU to win and move up to the second spot.  Autobid.

The WIAC makes things tricky from here.

3. UWW creams UWSP but their SOS takes a beating.  They will still be the first at-large team with an SOS well over .6
4. UWLC beats UWP to win the conference but will still be ranked behind UWW because of SOS.  Autobid
5. BU will fall to here because two losses but their SOS will be second only to UWW and they will be the second at-large pick.
6. CMU will squeak by Pomona and get the autobid.

7. GAC or Pac Lu or Pamona replace UWP as a recognition prize.  No at-large.  The other three will go to the other regions.

The BU/SJU game will have the same result just switching positions in the RR if BU manages a miracle in Collegeville.

QED

EDIT:  A quick question that I forget the answer to every year.  Will UWLC come off the rankings list immediately as an autobid or do they sit there in front of BU (or SJU) until their SOS gets them into the seeding?  Essentially, I'm wondering if they name the teams first and then seed or if they set the top four seeds and then start filling in teams.  If the second is the process, then we've got a small challenge facing our region's second at-large selection.  UWLC has a good but not great SOS that could keep the #5 team in my scenario from getting a look in until that last minute.  If they take out the autobids straight up and then just consider the remaining teams for at-large selections then our second at-large team is as close to a lock as you can get.  It may be a very nervous Sunday for the loser in Collegeville.

In your scenario, UWW would get the Autobid because they won against UWLC.

Doh.  I thought UWW had lost to UWLC but they lost to UWP.  So give UWW the autobid and then we have the challenge of deciding whether fewer losses or better SOS ranks the MIAC #2 over the WIAC #2.  If losses is king, then UWLC is in front.  If SOS is determinative then it's SJU/BU by quite a long way.  Assuming the fix is in, I'll keep it like it is.

1. Linfield plays L&C.  Linfield will retain top rank.  Autobid.
2. SJU against BU.  I pick SJU to win and move up to the second spot.  Autobid.
3. UWW creams UWSP.  Conference champs and autobid.
4. UWLC beats UWP but will have an SOS of about .540.  At-large, maybe the last one selected.
5. BU will fall to here because of two losses but their SOS will be around .620 and they will have a very nervous wait for an at-large selection because there are a few teams in front of UWLC on SOS who trail BU/SJU on the same metric by a long way.  The committee should transparently reward setting a tough schedule.
6. CMU will squeak by Pomona and get the autobid.
7. GAC or Pac Lu or Pamona replace UWP as a recognition prize.  No at-large.  The other three will go to the other regions.

EDIT:  If the committee blocks BU/SJU behind UWLC and the MIAC misses a second pick despite the SOS then I predict the return of the non-conference creampuff games.  You just cannot afford to drop a non-conference game.  It will be apparent that record beats SOS by quite a margin.

EDIT II: If, by some curse of Hell, SJU doesn't win this weekend then their SOS will be north of .64 and almost a full point in front of UWLC.  It could be that a losing SJU is in #4 position and primed for the first or second at-large bid while a losing BU will be dropped to #5 with that smidge worse SOS.

The MIAC  auto bid is on the line and we're talking about trombones.  ;D

I'm mostly interested in Jaren Roste's shoulder and my Bethel friend Dan G. is mum, however I was a percussionist and played in the CSB/SJU wind ensemble.  JohnnieUp

It's never a good idea to leave your fate in the hands of a committee.  SJU (StJ?) needs to leave no doubt on Saturday.

Sam, excellent call regarding Greg Thomas and the jazz flute.  ;D

As someone new to the board and completely incompetent in music I have read with awe the posts regarding musical instruments. Wish I had that skill!

Regarding Saturday it seems to me that the Johnnies just need to step forward, win the game, and put an end to the uncertainty. I can instant the regional rankings: we lost the first time around to Bethel. Now is the time to correct that lapse.

I will go out there and identify what I think are keys to the game: defensive line pressure that bothers the Bethel quarterback (whomever that might be), establish a running game, and then turn the passing game loose.

Given Friday's weather and the forecast for Saturday I think establishing the running game could be important.

Trumpet player here, played in the CSB/SJU Wind Ensemble and Jazz Band. Considered majoring in music (got a $12,000 trumpet scholarship from Luther College), but never learned how to play piano (I think all music teachers should be able to play the piano). My other fear of teaching music was that I would get stuck teaching 5th grade band the rest of my life, hearing the same 12 songs again and again. Went into teaching social studies instead.

I met my wife on a J-Term music trip to Washington D.C. sophomore year, so it all worked out.

You might be able to play the Triangle or Tamborine.... but I'd take baby steps.

So what's with Region 3 gaming the system and ranking 8 teams?  ???

LOL! I knew there were some closet tromboners in the audience....  :-*

I also played trombone in HS and at St John's. Sold it many years ago. Also played bugle in a drum and bugle corps. Played intramural B Ball and Club Rugby at SJU/

When was that?  I played on the club rugby team at Bethel after it became clear I was not the caliber of athlete likely to see much playing time in football.

SJU had a great team while I was playing.  There were both D2 and D3 levels in MN at the time, and BU was D3 my first couple of years, but moved up to D2 for the last two.  SJU was the class of D2 in the state at the time, but last I heard UMD has now become the top D2 rugby team in the state, even winning a national championship.  I don't think Bethel even has a team anymore, unfortunately.

Well before your time, I'm sure. 1969 - 1972

Maybe they felt obligated to get the only four teams in the entire region who played anyone with winning records into the list?  Or, more sinisterly, they have so many cream puff autobids that they snuck their only legit at-large candidate into the game.

EDIT: After looking at who is in the region, I see that the second idea isn't true.  I see that it's the Texas and friends region.  Maybe counting is a challenge?

Just by a minute or two   ;)

Were there a lot of other MIAC teams at that point?
