BU player is Matthew Feldick.

Good for him.  His mom was my daughter's 1st grade teacher a few years ago.

A tradition unrivaled...

The St. Cloud Times is down to a staff of three.

Sad. Been obvious for years the Times was in a death spiral. A once fine newspaper and real asset to the St. Cloud area.

The paper of Reusse and Augie. They covered the region's high schools, including the late, great Rum River Conference, like no other.
So sad. I spent a J term there in mid-'70.

Doomed as soon as it was acquired by Gannett. As they say. "With Gannett the accent is always on the net."

Dang -- hey, listen -- the St. Cloud Times has been a Gannett paper for at least 30 years. Things only got this bad a few years ago when Gannett merged with GateHouse, which was always much worse.

I do not know anything about the St. Cloud Times.    But all newspapers have been hit hard in the last 20 years by the growth of the internet.

True, it only got "this bad"  under Gannett/Gatehouse. Far worse. This is almost unimaginable. The merger was actually more of a takeover by Gatehouse, but it realized the Gannett brand was worth keeping. Gatehouse was always the cheapest of the cheap. (And I know cheap, I once worked for an outfit that told folks to bring their own soap for the restrooms.)

But I'd certainly say the SCT certainly suffered under Gannett, which did not treat its regional properties well. A longtime former managing editor there was a Johnnie, who was there long before Gannett. Gannett swept up weak and strong regional papers and held them all to a single standard. Beyond the  "cookie cutter" editorial policies, its cuts over most of years it owned St. Cloud appeared more severe than other chains, i.e. Knight Ridder, Scripps or others were making on similar properties.

I'm glad though that CSB/SJU grabbed former Timers such Deland, Frank R. and Dana D.

I reckon google search and adds killed the paper's advertising revenue.  It was a slow dwindle to nothing.

All newspapers have, of course, been hit hard over the decades. But some companies are smarter, stronger than others.

St. Cloud would likely be better off had it been purchased by Forum, which grabbed up a number of Upper Midwest papers over the past few years, including Duluth and Rochester.

Check out the staff at the Willmar paper, which has about 40 percent smaller circulation.

Just an update: a reporter from the Strib, an Ole btw, reports the Times is now down to two.

Thanks for the link. Somehow, I expected to see Bethel (2) and St. Johns (1) with more than three combined appearances in the semi-finals since then. Granted, the MIAC has a few more appearances if you go back before 2005.

I always ponder how many appearances Mount Union would have if it had to go through the west/southwest gauntlet every year.

Not that it makes a huge difference, but the chart undercounts SJU by 1....should be 2 (B2B in 2018 vs MHB and 2019 vs UWW).....one caveat to the chart it; the UWW vs MU Invitational started and went for eight seasons during that time.

2018 SJU vs. UMHB was a quarterfinal (unbelievably). Great game.
