St. Cloud Orthopedics Feature: SJU Football Begins Spring Practice

Of note:
QuoteThe Johnnies added several transfers at the semester break, each of whom are taking part in spring workouts.  They are:

•    Eli Olson, a 6-foot-4, 290-pound offensive lineman who started three seasons at Mankato East High School before committing to Division II Minnesota-Duluth where he spent last season.

•    Joey Moberg, a 5-10, 200-pound wide receiver from St. Paul Johnson who spent the past two seasons at FCS Sacred Heart (Conn.).

•    Cooper Downs, a 6-3, 205-pound quarterback who was at SJU in 2020 and 2021, but transferred to Division III Central (Iowa) last season.

Downs returning is an interesting development.  ???

The keys for the 2023 team:
1. Have an offensive line that can move people...we've got more bulk up front but IMO haven't had guys that move very well. Maybe it's because we've become so reliant on the passing game and big play...but we need to become a better running team.
2. Figure out who will replace Woz and Metoriah.
3. Shore up the defensive backfield...we were too inconsistent back there.

The fact that "his dad" has not graced us with his presence here severely disappoints me.  :'(
He's still posting regularly on gopherhole, most recently ripping the recently departed Bud Grant for not winning super bowls.  There's going to be at least 3 more Kowalkowski boys coming through over the next 15 years, they might all be Johnnie QBs.

From what I have seen, the current one is not even a Johnnie QB.  :o

According to the Kowalkowski twitter world, for the Johnnie JVers Kristoff had a 79% completion rate, no interceptions, and was the fastest QB on the team.  I think he'd start for other D3 teams, but the Johnnies just have a lot of competition.

I readily admit that I know next to nothing about offensive scheming, but I just don't like the zone-blocking run game.  Whether it is a personnel issue or not, it has just not been working well for SJU in recent years.

Hmmm, well if he's that incredible, it's troubling that he's not among the 4 QBs that attempted a pass for SJU in 2022.  ::)

Well you probably know more than me...all I know is it didn't look like our run blocking was very effective.

No model rockets?   Just a guy working hard to make his dreams come true?  Snooze.

Speaking of rockets, you had better be getting a jump on this year.  Your set quite the standard last year.

Short yardage run game will be required to get through the first three games...... if not, there's a slim chance of playoffs

FYI Oz, 3-31/4-1 we're in a blizzard warning. Spring has abandoned us  :'(
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

Cooper is going to have to compete with that Kristoff Kowalkowski fella for the starting spot this year.

Your reference is not lost on me, but unless you've heard otherwise, Syverson should be back this year.

Oh yeah, all signs point to Syverson coming back.
Sing us a song, you're the piano man
Sing us a song tonight
Well, we're all in the mood for a melody
And you've got us feelin' alright.

All signs?  Are people even asking the question?  It sounds like you're trying to relay a subtle message.

Is he in his actual 5th year or the Super Sr/Covid Bonus Year? I know he redshirted at Colorado State his first year out of HS
