Bethel University Rocket Society are repeat winners of the Upper-Midwest Space Grant Contest. This year's objectives were to fly the same rocket twice; once to 1000 feet and once to 3000 feet, then using active steering to guide the descent to a predetermined spot on the landing field, and then at the end of the flight, sticking the landing so the engine section stays standing up. Once the official news gets posted I'll share the links at that point. Go Bethel!

That sounds like a SpaceX falcon.  Rocketing has come a long way from my days as a kid when it was simply launch one and then get on the four wheeler and chase after the parachute, hoping you can find it again.

For sure!  I probably had half a dozen different Estes rocket kits when I was a kid, where you'd build it sort of like a model airplane.  Super fun, kind of want to do the same when my kids get a little older.

Took a look - and they're still out there!  A number of the same ones that I had back in the day.  Prices have gone up a lot though, at least from what I remember.

My son got one a couple years ago for his birthday.  We built and launched it, and it was a big hit.  Both kids got kits for Christmas this year.  We've built them but haven't launched yet.

A tradition unrivaled...

I was just looking at the Estes Rockets website before I checked back in on the boards! We built them a lot as kids and would shoot them off at the farm, and then we would get to ride with my dad or uncle on the four-wheeler to go track down the rocket in whatever field they landed in. There was one day where there were some serious winds (like 30-40 mph+) once you got about 800 feet above ground level. It carried one rocket about halfway from our farm East of Royalton to Rice!

I've got three daughters that would absolutely love it.

The rockets are pretty reasonably priced (especially the entry level ones) at $20 and below. The engines themselves are about $3-4 per launch (if you're shooting a standard middle-of-the-road "C" engine).

You guys are high tech. All I had to fly was a Sno-Boy kite bought at the local five and dime for about 15 cents. I used my mom's old nylons as a tail.

We'd get the whole neighborhood out across the street in the city dump flying various kites. The only time we had to chase was when someone's string broke and it took off into the city disposal plant or got hung up in a tree across the street.

Either way we didn't chase much, we would just roll around laughing until we almost puked at the poor sap who's kite took off.

This competition is cracked.  It doesn't have separate men's and women's championships and there are seven women's sports counted and only six men's sports.  Includes lacrosse but not hockey?  Men's volleyball and not women's?  Women's water polo?  No football?  No basketball for either sex?  Somehow it doesn't include soccer, which surprises me given the region it is obviously geared to boost.

Just call it the New England sports championship and be honest about it.

It captures all sports throughout the school calendar year. It does not break it out separately by men and women as most colleges are co-ed. It also states at the top of the table "NOTE: 18 total teams can be scored for the final standings (Four of which MUST BE M-W Basketball M-W Soccer)" If you look at the far right on each page, it shows spring, winter, and fall points. Only spring season points are shown in this view as that's the last season to finish up.
