Cobbers outplayed johnnies in the second half of the game last year.

That fourth quarter was agonizing.

Ice Bear

Ice Bear says he hopes all on the Mighty ****ing MIAC board are well. Ice misses everyone (he's a sensitive emotional mother****ing Polar Bear).

Ice says that this season he will be even more of a Bethel and MIAC fan as a result of his be-****ing-loved Union College Dutchmen changing their name (Ice ****s you not this is ****ing real) from the Dutchmen to...The Union College garnet chargers (Ice re-****ing-fuses to capitalize the g and c).

Ice says some claim this was a PC/woke move but Ice really doesn't think so. He thinks the stupid ****ing college staff (or some rich ass donor) felt like there should be a change in order to garner some excitement here in Shocktown, USA. Ice says the only thing they brewed is pure horse **** and he's ****ing disgusted.

Ice says that's enough. He won't bore you fine MIAC posters with anymore of this nonsense. Ice is heart broken over this debacle. He's ****ing melting as he types.

Since he got that out of his system Ice inquires about his new love Bethel. Ice asks, "any info out there?"

GTFOH. The garnet chargers?  What even is that?  It's worse than my beloved Grand Rapids Indians changing to the thunder hawks.

I had to look it up.  Garnet because there's a lot of rocks in the area and chargers because the school had an electronics program at some point?  The Union Oxygen Combusters would have been equally as appropriate.  I guess some clog-wearing, windmill-tilting Dutch crybabies shed a tear somewhere. Wow. I can't wait until someone takes offence on behalf of electricity and the name changes again.

You're right, Ice Bear, it is a sad ****ing day. My commiserations.

EDIT:  I bet they originally wanted to do just the Chargers but the San Diego deserters probably have a trade claim on that name.  So some DEI administration genius was out walking the dog, saw some little red rocks on the side of the road and said, "Garnet!  Yeah!  That's the ticket!"

There has not been a lot to cheer about with Hawthorn the last five or so seasons.  Their legends retired, super coach Alistair Clarkson was burned out and past his "used by" date, and it was a big hill to climb back up.  Well, they have definitely turned the corner and are ready to rocket to the top of the standings.

They are now coached by Hawthorn's former premiership winning captain Sam Mitchell in his second season at the helm. He's got the youngest team in the AFL playing some exciting, physical, and aggressive footy. They have only won six while losing fourteen, but they have steadily improved this year and yesterday put the most complete, physical and structured game together that Hawthorn has played in at least eight years.  There were no passengers yesterday as Hawthorn brought the goods and beat league leaders and premiership favourites Collingwood.

These highlights don't do the game justice. Every minute is worth watching as it was tight and physical the whole way. Spectacular football in what has already been labeled the clear upset of the season.

EDIT: Hawthorn physically smashed Collingwood, going nose to nose with a much more experienced team. Three superstar Magpies were knocked out of the game, a former Brownlow medalist (season MVP), the reigning Rising Star medalist (rookie of the year), and the unbackably short odds favourite to win this year's Brownlow.  No cheap shots, just hard at the ball footy.  Was a thrill to watch. A similar feeling to Erdmann and the Johnnie's breakout game against UST in 2018.

Current view appears they lost 6 (5 starters) from offensive two deep and 6 (4 starters) from defensive two deep when looking at Elite Eight playoff squad. Starting QB, RB, and 3 OL on offense are gone. Both starting rush ends, strong safety, and 1 corner on defense are gone.

Replacing Roste is THE big question mark obviously. Had a freshman RB come on strong at end of last season so will need more depth there. WR room is stacked again. Some young talent on OL so need to continue developing that and see how they gel. Starting center and LT return so that should help with whoever new QB will be.

Defensively, need to find replacements for rush ends, interior d line is mostly back, LB corps should be intact, losing strong safety to graduation will hurt, but secondary should be in decent shape. Roster shows 37 incoming freshmen, no positions listed yet.

I do have a tidbit that occurred earlier this year - Kyle Kilgore, standout defensive lineman at BU a few years back, is now coaching on the defensive side of the ball at BU.

I was looking through the schedules this year and noticed that October 7th is scheduled to be homecoming for both St. Olaf and Carleton, which is interesting since they are playing each other at Carleton.  I wasn't a linguistics major, but I always thought one of the prerequisites for homecoming was that it was, you know, at home.

I don't know much about how NIL works but am wondering if it could become a kind of back channel "scholarship" system in D3.

Being that that is how it's panning out in DI, I fully expect that to happen in DIII.  ::)

a combined homecoming game between two schools in the same town seems like a great idea to juice attendance, honestly.

So will we hear ads on "The Bear" for the Blue Line Sports Bar with voice overs from the likes of Alex Larson? I guess it would be better than their current ads,

Thoughts on this?

I have no doubt this will happen. Maybe it already is. Just spit balling, but a donor funded NIL for a D3 school with a good local following might make the difference for an athlete also considering a D2 directional state university. The number of D3 schools with a fanbase strong enough fund NILs would probably be extremely small. I'm guessing the best candidates would be schools located in big towns/small cities where the team is popular and the main attraction in town; where the local car/implement dealer or rich farmer might pitch in some bucks for an NIL fund.

No need to juice it when it's at St. Olaf, that place has been packed for every Carleton-St. Olaf game I can remember. Laird stadium is a different scale. I thought they played @Carleton last year though?

It's already tough to get a room in town for any saturday in the fall and almost impossible during one school's homecoming. I wonder if the two schools will collaborate for a hotel shuttle service to Lakeville.
