Looked like a combo of Hardin-Simmons also having a good win, and St. John's falling quite a bit, is what led Trinity to fall a spot.

The sky appears to have not completely plummeted with SJU still in the top 10. Bethel drops a couple of spots. UWW gets a big leapfrog, HSU moves up a place with a win over UW-La Crosse, Trinity and Lindfield lose a place despite the wins.

An SJU bye week gives a chance to look at how the MIAC/the region is looking. Will be interesting to see how Bethel looks game 2 after a tough game 1.

Who would ever think that a team who defeats UMHB would drop a spot in the poll ??? Every season is a new season.

Will Bolt be the guy for the Royals next week? Sometimes when you have a senior and an underclassman who are playing at a similar level it can be a tough call on who to play. Do you give the nod to the Senior for time put in and commitment with the hope that some team/game experience will lead the way? Or do you give the nod to the younger player in hopes of growth through game experience, a spark maybe, or the future? Thoughts?

I'd guess it could be a case of pick your poison. Senior QB should know the offense much better, but may not be as dynamic. Compared to younger QB who may have some limitations on amount of playcalls, but provides more playmaking ability. Who is more turnover prone is something to monitor as well. UW Eau Claire game may be one where both see minutes with a goal of trying to settle on one for Johnnies the following week.

Great teams cover Duff.

I say this with all the love in the world for my law school alma mater:

USD is not a great team.

They've had three winning seasons since 2011. They aren't even good most years--in fact, they've been downright terrible lately (3-8 in 2022). Every now and again they make it a fight for the middle of the MVFC, perhaps upset SDSU or NDSU in a shocker, but that's about it.
My reference was to UST covering the spread, knowing that USD is not a top tier MVFC squad. Frustrating we couldn't get on the board but better than the 41 pt drubbing against UNI or 31 against Southern Utah. Good measuring sticks if nothing else. We'll see if we get back any of the injured guys for this Saturday.

Now back to my regularly scheduled lurking

Ice,
Hazz or Art could tell you better but Steve Johnson's MO over the past 25 years that I've been paying attention is to take a youngster and give him just enough leash, then gradually increase the length of the leash. He's a smart guy and this has worked for him many times in the past. I'd bet we see the youngster more & more, eventually being named the starter.
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

SJU13

Taking a look at the replay Wartburg seemed set up to defend the deep ball and rally to the run/short routes. Bolt was hitting guys high and low along with a couple of drops. Call, a lefty, looked a little better at hitting guys in the numbers. Bolt had some good designed runs. Not sure if Call is a runner or someone who will just look to use the legs to escape as needed. Seeing who takes over the RB duties is another question. Seemed like Ellingson was the next man up.

That defense though will certainly keep them in games while their offense shakes out.

I was able to watch the replay - Bolt looked better to me, and I think the game may have ended better for the Royals - possible win - if he had stayed in. Against Eau Claire, I hope Bolt stays in until the game is in hand and then Ball gets some more game experience.

Couple MIAC players made the D3Football team of the week:

DE Michael Carey, Sr., Carleton
Michael Carey had two sacks, two forced fumbles, a fumble recovery, a pass breakup and five tackles as Carleton rallied in the second half for a 45-24 victory over Pomona-Pitzer. Both of Carey's strip sacks set up Carleton scoring drives.

ST Stuart DeMerit, Jr., Concordia-Moorhead
Stuart DeMerit scored the decisive touchdown on a 93-yard field goal block in the Cobbers' 26-21 win over Pacific Lutheran. The 93-yard return after a blocked field goal is the longest in program history. The blocked field goal attempt came with Concordia-Moorhead clinging to a 13-7 lead in the third quarter.

TE from UWW also got the nod for his performance against the Johnnies:

TE Drake Martin, Jr., UW-Whitewater
Martin bolstered the No. 8 Warhawks' 56-28 win over No. 4 St. John's with 93 yards receiving on three catches - an average of 31 yards per reception. He hauled in a 45-yard scoring catch in the second half in one of UWW's biggest plays on the day.

Bolt's issue is that he locks onto Kidder and tries to force the ball to him. Wart had him bracketed with double coverage almost all game. With as many weapons available at WR, you have to progress to the guy who is open. He also isn't as accurate enough. I get the sense he's almost pre-determining where he's gonna go pre-snap and not actually reading the play as it develops.

If that's indeed the case, that's not good.

I'm just hoping the Johnnies can keep the Bye offense out of the end zone this week.

Man, we're not used to a leaky D, eh?  Traditionally we have an offense that can't get it to the endzone and it is the D that is saving the bacon.  It seems to have switched the last five or six years, no?

Might want to talk to a urologist if you have a leaky D.
