From the game notes:

QuoteSenior linebacker Erik Bjork (Mahtomedi, Minn.), the John-
nies' leading tackler each of the past two seasons and with 31
(12 solo) through three games this fall, will miss the first half of
Saturday's game at Augsburg due to a targeting penalty called in the fourth quarter of last weekend's home win over Bethel. SJU's appeal was unsuccessful.

On Friday I'm leaving for a week of deep sea fishing in Far North Queensland where there will be no internet communications.  If I come home on the spear of a marlin, please remember me fondly.

I'll way up in Cooktown on the Cape York Peninsula and we'll be fishing off the top of the Great Barrier Reef on the edge of the Coral Sea.

Colour me jealous, Oz!  That sounds amazing.

Yes, it should be good.  I'm not much of a fisherman but this is kind of an event, no?  I'll post pics if we get anything good.

Worth a shot. I suspect the end zone angle was more definitive than what we saw on the broadcast clip offered earlier.

Speaking of using your helmet / targeting. Saw this story where a Steelers running back was fined an entire games pay for using his helmet inappropriately. He wasn't even penalized in the game.

Reminded me of this play in an SJU/Olaf game a couple years ago. Maybe the MIAC/D3 should allow reviews of of non calls and eject/suspend players after the fact.

Also...is a player permitted to leave the back of the end zone and come in a pick up the ball or is that illegal touching?

From the clip shown it looks like he never left the field of play. If he did leave the field, one would think there would be a penalty assessed in some way. Otherwise, benches would empty on untouched punts if it was a free for all.

I believe under NFHS rules it is illegal participation for any player to intentionally go out of bounds and return, intentionally touch the ball, influence the play, or otherwise participate.

I agree with Art on this one--I don't actually see the player that scores the touchdown actually go out of bounds.

Sing us a song tonight
Well, we're all in the mood for a melody

I think his right foot might be out of bounds but it's difficult to tell from the video.
As a hypothetical what if he was out of bounds? What's the ruling? Is there a penalty assessed from the goal line? Does the kicking team retain possession?

I may be getting soft in my old age but man that was some ferocious contact! Not making a judgement here because I don't know what to think...but man football is a tough game.

On a side note Bethel has a big, "bounce back" game this weekend at home against the Gusties. I would really like to see a W here with some offensive output. Also, I may have missed this information but does anyone know Geebli's timeline?

I thought Coach Johnson was quoted as saying Geebli was done for 2023 season

Thanks for the info Biggie +k. What a shame about Geebli. I thought he was going to have a very good season.
