Any predictions on how the Johnnies will do next season? Will they use the playoff snub, & loss to Gustavus, besides being absolutely embarrassed in the second half by Whitewater as motivation, or will a deep playoff run & Stagg Bowl berth remain a hope & wish?

So, GAC gets 2nd place points in football despite being 5-3 in the conference, while SJU gets 3rd place points while being 7-1.  Makes total sense.

Only place in the entire sports world with that kind of math...
I was thinking that as well. The only and most fitting adjective to describe that is stupid.

If the gap between the Johnnies and Gustavus in the final Durenberger Trophy standings is anything under two points, we will be calling for an asterisk next to the results.

Their place will depend entirely if 2023 can be used as motivation/ "wake up call"- living off the reputation of past teams success is not a viable strategy.
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

The defense will need to find a way to be more disruptive up front and control the line of scrimmage.
Concern is we didn't have that one guy up front that caused chaos. If there's a guy on the current roster that can do that I wonder why he wasn't playing this past season. We lose our best linebacker and did not have a dominant safety or shut down defensive back. If the defense is going to be markedly improved we will need to have some guys transfer in.

On offense we will be rebuilding...as of now we lose Larson, Van Erp, Syverson, and Feddema. I'm have no idea what percent of the offense those guys were responsible for but I bet it was well over 50%.
If Syverson does not return it's going to be pretty much a complete rebuild on offense. The likely heir would be Dittbenner who threw a total of 19 passes this past season. If he was the starter I could see a revamp of the offense and more of a RPO style.

Unfortunately I think SJU fans should keep expectations low and hope to be surprised.

Thank you guys! That's what I was afraid of! Wish we were watching the Johnnies & not North Central tonight!

sjujohnnie

So should we be rooting for North Central since they're closer or for Cortland to end North Central's all divisions leading winning streak?

faunch

Cortland is holding up and giving NCC everything they can handle.

If Cortland beat NCC then that will be amazing. Great work for them. They just took the lead with under two minutes to go.  If they win, the East won't be the D3 whipping boys anymore.

Even if they lose from here you can't call them whipping boys.

NCC goes for two?

Edit, yup.

And stuffed!  Wow. I thought they would kick after the time out. Go cortland!

That is without a doubt one of the best football games I can remember watching! Wow! Great football!

Many congratulations to Cortland. I'm amazed that NCC went full Tommie and tried to win with a two-point play.  Everyone knows you never go full Tommie. Just as Sean Penn.

Wow! Well I couldn't have been more wrong, I thought NCC would win by 20. Good for Cortland, very cool to see more disparity happening these playoffs.

I think it also shows that sometimes it isn't the best team, but the hottest team when it comes playoff time.

faunch

I too was surprised by Cortland.
I still don't think they should have been awarded a touchdown on that catch they used replay on in the third quarter. I thought his left foot was coming off the ground by the time he had possession.
