On Thursday morning, #2 and I went to the dawn service at the War Memorial for ANZAC Day (Australia and New Zealand's joint Memorial Day).  Apparently, 40k people were there.  It didn't seem like that many to me, but it was pretty dark, as you can see, and we were close to the front of the crowd.

So we're standing in the cold and dark at 5:15am waiting for the service to begin and the day's schedule flashes up on a screen.  #2 asks, "Uh, this isn't the servicemen's parade?"

"No," I chuckle. "You clearly said last night that you wanted to go to the dawn service."

"I thought that was the parade.  Doh."

"Well, now you can say you've been to the dawn service.  Not a complete loss."

#3 is officially attending CSB next year to study computer science. Yesterday, she found out that she made the CSB competitive dance team. After 25 years of begging for SJU season tickets for football, my wife suggested that we look into purchasing season tickets for the halftime performances.

Heh.  And she thinks she's being clever.  Little did she know that you were running an 18-year plan to finally get permission to buy season tickets.  "Dance, my little sweet pea, like it's the last time you'll lace on shoes!"

(Also, congratulations!)

Zim, if you don't get season tix, give me a holler.  Who knows how many games we'll make with Duff Jr's schedule.

Quote from: faunch on April 24, 2024, 03:50:31 PMThrowing this out to the MIAC and D3 community. John Faison was a high school and MIAC football, basektball and baseball official. I don't know him personally but have followed his story. He took a tumble off a ladder last fall and suffered some awful injuries. He's on the mend but has a long road to recover.

I'm pretty sure his crew was officiating one of the Wartburg Playoff games and we heard that they had an official fall off a ladder.  I hope he is on the mend and back on the field soon.  In my experience, I like ARC officials the best but MIAC officials are waaaaaay better then the WIAC guys.

We saw that when we were in Melbourne, impressive Memorial.

The MIAC Tennis regular season is officially in the books. Gustavus captured its 37th consecutive regular season conference championship. The Johnnies finished in a three-way tie for fifth, and as a result we have a new leader in the Durenberger All-Sports Competition.

The baseball regular season concludes in less than a week and the Durenberger Trophy will be awarded following the conclusion of the MIAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Hamline on May 11.

Quote from: faunch on April 22, 2024, 06:19:08 PMSJU sent out tailgate renewal notices today. Apparently $200 per space per season wasn't enough. Price has been raised to $250 for the season. I remember making of U$T for fleecing the fans of their 💴.
SJU is trying to monetize the hell out of the football program. Better get back in the top 10 soon!
If we ever get back to the Stagg Bowl the price of a tailgate spot could jump to over $4000.
I know GAC has a dedicated tailgate lot (because two on their alumni board came to our group on a fact finding tour in 2022) but I don't believe there is a charge for the space. I also know that SJU has a waiting list for the tailgating lot. How do other MIAC schools handle the tailgating situation at their schools?

Two wins in three weeks... we're riding high on Hawthorn!  A big win against the Bulldogs on the weekend.  A real guts and determination effort.

The captain and backline hard man, James Sicily, went down hard in an early contest and got up from the ground with his shoulder at a very painful angle.  He runs unassisted straight down into the rooms, and fifteen minutes later, his shoulder is popped back in, and he's back on the ground.  He goes down again with a severely twisted ankle.  He straps it and goes on again, this time playing at full forward because he's lost so much mobility, only to kick the game-winning goal.

And 18-year-old debutant Calsher Dear - son of Hawthorn legend and '91 Norm Smith Medalist (the Grand Final MVP) Paul Dear, who died of cancer just two years ago - kicks two in the front line in an amazing start to a top-level career.

Also, the  Hawks are fielding the youngest team every week.  Yesterday they were a full two years younger on average than the Dogs.  Good times ahead as these boys put on muscle and gain experience.

There's no demand at other schools.  :o

What going on with season tix?  I usually get a renewal notification in March but haven't heard a thing yet.

Probably still figuring out how much higher they can raise prices without pissing off loyal fans.

The MIAC Baseball regular season is in the books. St. Olaf brought its 18th baseball championship back to Northfield and first since 2007.

Lots of movement in just a few days in the Durenberger Trophy standings. SJU's tie for third combined with GAC's fifth place finish caused another flip at the top of the leaderboard. The Johnnies take a one point lead into this weekend's MIAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Hamline University.

Carleton and St. Olaf flip-flopped places and the Oles now sit in third while the Knights have fallen to fifth. Concordia and Augsburg stayed put in sixth and ninth, respectively. St. Scholastica leapt ahead of Macalester for seventh while the Scots fell to eighth, and St. Mary's second place baseball finish catapulted the Cardinals over Hamline for the tenth position.

The Johnnies clinch by defending their outdoor title or tying with Gustavus. Gustavus needs to finish more than one spot ahead of St. John's.

Poor Hamline.  A legacy women's school that competes in two fewer sports still beats them in the all-sports trophy.  Back when I was first looking at Minnesota schools in the mid-80's Hamline was a viable MIAC competitor.
