I hear you and I'm not disagreeing with you. I most certainly do not want them to keep playing the likes of Morris, I think a greater challenge is needed, but they're definitely skipping to the top. I'd rather see them play whoever is top dog in the MWC or WashU. But like I said that's Journell's mindset, he'll never turn down competition.

Journell also coached in the WIAC previously at River Falls and SP. With their scheduling woes, it could be that he's also trying to help out a friend.

How is Laird Stadium and the rest of the campus?  It looked like Laird and the West Gym got flooded again based on some photos I saw.  Also hoping the WBB is able to recover at Carleton. Coach Metcalf-Filzen was always very kind to me when I was in Northfield.

I'm not gonna fault someone for going out and scheduling UWW. I think I'd probably have picked a team that was more middle of the pack for the WIAC to start. But honestly, I kinda like the chutzpah.

I've also never bought this notion Carleton could never compete. If they got buy in to support the vision across campus leadership, why couldn't they be similar to a WashU? Consistently top third of the CCIW and no one looks at their football success and thinks it diminishes their academic profile. The million dollar question is whether there's the patience and persistence to see that through in Northfield.

Got a chance to meet Coach Journell back in 2018 when he graciously allowed us to stretch and do a walk through in Laird Stadium on our way to play Concordia-Moorhead. He seemed to sincerely feel that the quality of the school would enable him to recruit high quality student athletes. I don't remember if he talked about a national scope, but I think he might have. While he recognized his player pool was smaller than most schools, he felt like he would have a great opportunity to recruit those who are in that pool of players. I came away really impressed with him. Both in terms of his vision and in terms of just being a really good guy. For whatever reason, I never had a conversation with him while he was at Point.

Not sure who put the poll on this page, but the extra eight at-large teams do not water down the field. The automatic bids water down the field!

I put the poll up and am firmly in the camp of it's a good thing, and they need to figure out the SOS metric to make it a great thing. But there are opinions out there that expanding Pool C wasn't that big of a deal since everyone had a chance to get in through winning their conference. I totally agree the auto bids and the lowered threshold for number of teams in a conference watered things down.

Essentially was adding an option for a view I think is wrong, but people hold. As evidenced by the 3 people who voted for that option.

I don't fault you for including it, for sure. Speaking to those who chose it.

Any at-large team would be better than the bottom half-dozen conference champs. And if they're not, then we need to get the dials twisted in a better direction.

I thought you were referring to actually watering down a field, which is rarely applicable now that so many schools have gone to turf.  ;)

Johns Knees

Anyone know why John Haws resigned as Johnnie soccer coach?

I figured he was a lifer. He's not even 50.

Good question.  I was wondering the same thing.  I think its a little strange that a replacement wasn't named.

Hawthorn absolutely smashed the defending premiers Collingwood on Saturday afternoon in front of 74k maniacs who defied horrid weather to watch the game. I was in bed all day Sunday feeling like death warmed over after that outing but feel pretty good this morning. The wife's first words today were "You going to work?"  Only I don't think there was a question mark at the end.

Anyways, we are the most dangerous and consistent side in the competion for the last twelve rounds. If we keep this up then we're into the finals and the real fireworks begin. A huge game against Adelaide in Adelaide this coming weekend.

Through the rumor mill, I've heard there is some unrest in the athletic department at SJU.
