SJU13

Competition aside, Cooper Drews had himself an efficient first game leading the Bethel O. Wouldn't be surprised to see them crack the Top 25 given the couple of stumbles by teams in the lower half of the rankings.

Will be interesting to see where Wartburg and SJU land in the poll. The Knights were the only team in the top 10 to lose, there were a couple of close games, and the rest had a team in a bye week or was a blow out.

And the replay is working now!  I'm just sitting down to a Sunday afternoon Johnnie victory. Go Johnnies!

Saw snippets of the BU/NW game on my phone tonight while in the ER. My wife of 40 years gets to spend the night in the ER before her gallbladder gets removed in the morning. G'night all...

I hope all goes well with the surgery, Art.  I imagine it will be done with two small pencil-size incisions, like with an appendix removal.  It's amazing what's done with surgery nows days.

Good luck from the boards.

Well, it was sure fun to watch the game in the afternoon.  Particularly when the Johnnies played so well.

* Syverson was throwing it on a string.  He keeps this up and AirJohnnie will be very dangerous this season.
* A number of Johnnies were making themselves very available to Syverson, particularly Wheeler.
* Blakey looks like a very interesting running back.  He turns up the field and moves into gaps with intent.  Looks dangerous.
* The defensive line and linebackers look hot.  McMahon popped up a number of times with impressive linebacker plays. Only a sophomore.

The only downside I had was that the secondary was carved up. They seemed to miss a number of assignments.  It's hard to believe that Wartburg threw for over 300 yards but had only one passing touchdown.  I guess ten (10!) sacks does that to you.

And if any of the AV people read these boards: congratulations and thank you!  The video quality was excellent.  We saw the plays, avoided the shakey cam and enjoyed replays.  Nice work.

Lastly, WTF with the dancing rats?  A Johnnie Rat Pack rat, maybe, but actual dancing rats?  Nah.  Get someone from the arts department to do a short dancing Johnnie Rat if that's needed for a filler.  Someone can do a GenAI extra credit project.

Oh, and Bobby, the half-time show is looking good.  Your daughter and her teammates are clearly practicing hard.

Art, prayers going out. That's a painful one but she'll feel so much better once it is removed.
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

Early season polling is more of a "how did you finish the previous season" type of thing. The Johnnies deserved the #13 going into the season and #12 going into yesterday. I'm hoping that Wartburg wasn't rated artificially high due to their finish last year. Based on the performance yesterday I am currently feeling pretty good about the Johnnies chances in 2024. There is plenty of room for improvement and they had a dominant win over a Top5 team. Go Johnnies!

I think Bethel winds up at #24 this week. Berry and Ithaca are likely out with their losses.

For SJU, I don't know how much they'll move, but I could see them sliding past Susquehanna who won by 6 against Brockport (no votes). Maybe past Grove City who had a bye. Maybe past Randolph-Macon who beat Hobart 14-7. Plus I expect SJU to be ahead of Wartburg, of course. With all those, SJU could be as high as #8. I don't see them jumping UW-RF or JHU.

Prayers for your wife Art.

For BU it was a good first game, especially considering it's a new offense. An ideal opponent for them to work some of the kinks out.

Downs throws a nice ball and settled in. He had happy feet a few times early and exited the pocket before pressure was there. You could see some first time start jitters. Had a throw or two that are likely a pick against a good secondary, but one was on a free play were NW jumped into the neutral zone.

Same for Oline, they looked good considering it's a new scheme. Had some communication issues and some things to clean up against pressure. But solid outing and hoping they only get better and more comfortable with the offense going forward.

D looked great. When they pulled the starters early 3rd NW had 2 first downs and 15 yds of total offense. The WR I'd heard so much about for the eagles looked pedestrian against our starting DB's. If their QB hadn't been running for his life he had no one to throw it to anyway. I think he had 2 catches for like 13 yds when we started subbing.

UWEC looks improved. Should be a good step up in competition and a better test, especially for the OLine and CD.

This might be common knowledge, but I just saw this on St Cloud Live:

"Fasching said he expects junior running back Caden Wheeler (foot) to return for the Bethel game. Wheeler broke a bone in one of his feet during training camp in August. Fasching also expects sophomore defensive back Peyton Goettlicher (deep quadriceps bruise) to return for the Bethel game."

Getting some more help in the secondary should help SJU since that was their main weakness yesterday in my opinion.

It was satisfying to see SJU go "Jumbo" in short yardage with with 270lb and very nimble DL #97 Zach Frank leading blocking
