As I understand it, SJU is the only one paying NIL money in the MIAC.

Oh, I was just kidding. I don't anticipate that type of thing happening in D3, at least I hope not. It has made D1 an absolute mess. Although I could certainly see more SJU backups trying their hand somewhere else after seeing the success of Mattern and Drews.

How does the NIL money work, anyways?  Does a school pay?  Boosters?  Sponsoring businesses?  And do players need to do anything for the it or do brown bags of cash just get passed around the locker room?

Oh, it's happening.  I can't imagine it's real lucrative, at this level, but it is happening at SJU.

How much to get Drews back to Collegeville?

Maybe a free Gary's Special per week will lure him back?

Ah, brown paper bags. I had only seen the headlines about Larry Ellison enticing a stud quarterback to Michigan with a paper bag full of Benjamins, but I didn't care enough to look into how it actually worked.

I doubt there's much more than beer money involved at the D3 level, but then I've been surprised in life before.  And beer money today is a down payment on a house tomorrow.  These things only go in one direction.

The day of the student-athlete is passing, and the day of the athlete-student is arriving.

QuoteUnderwood's NIL deal would be pocket change for Ellison. LSU reportedly had offered the teenage QB a four-year deal worth $1.5 million annually. Michigan's collective upped that number to at least $10 million over four years, with at least one report saying the offer was for $12 million.

Wow, he's getting more money than he would from an NFL rookie contract, assuming he's even good enough to get drafted. Some sort of salary cap/total player payments scheme will need to be put in place, or we'll soon have Power Five teams with NIL salary totals resembling the Yankees and Mets.

That's an insane amount of money at 18. Hope he's got a good financial advisors around him, if so he's set.

Ok all.  It has been a long long long long time since I posted on this board, but I felt compelled for 2 reasons all related to the discussion today:
1.  I was at that horrible UWL-SJU game in '96 where SJU imploded in late 3rd/4th.  It was cold, sideways rain/sleet mix and I think the field was literally freezing as the game progressed
2.  I met Tom Engwall earlier this year with Brandon Novak and other guys from SJU teams in early 2000s-great guy, and yes, a Big 12 javelin champ at UT.

I think i listened to both on the radio.
If I recall I was typing a paper on one of the Apple II computers in the CSB library while listening to that Dayton game. Floppy disks 💾 and listening to games on the radio...I guess that makes me old.

Heh.  I typed all my papers over at CSB as well.  That new library was much easier to concentrate in.  The Alcuin's dusty smell and overly warm air made me so sleepy I couldn't stay focused for more than ten minutes.  If I had pencil and paper homework or reading to do, I did that all in my dorm room.
