Greeting MIAC fans, followers, and other fellow people with too much time on our hands to go with internet access.

It's gonna be a busy semester with classes and studying for boards, so my appearances will be spotty and sporadic at best.

I just wanted to drop in and offer my 2 cents as to who should have won the Heisman especially after last night.

Reggie Bush didn't deserve the Heisman
Let me first start this post by congratulating the 2005 National Champion Texas Longhorns and the man who DESERVED the Heisman: VINCE YOUNG!

Here are my top ten reasons why Reggie Bush didn't deserve to win the Heisman trophy:

10. His back-up, LenDale White, lead the nation in touchdowns this year and had 42 more rushing yards in the National Championship game.

9. His quarterback, Matt Leinart, won the Heisman trophy last year.

8. His team's #1 WR, Dwayne Jarrett (no relation to Dale), led the nation in receiving touchdowns this year. (I would be impressed if the average american could have named another Texas offensive starter before last night's game)

7. Yes, Bush had 321 all pupose yards in the National Championship game, however 102 yards were on 5 kickoff returns where he only averaged 20.4 yards per return. A blind monkey should be able to average 20 yards per kick return in college. For reference, 3 other players returned kicks in this game and the only one with an average less than Bush's 20.4 was a linebacker who recovered a squib kick. Vince Young had 467 real yards (rushing and passing).

6. Vince Young (Texas' QB) had nearly 2.5 times as many rushing yards as Bush did (200:82)

5. Bush accounted for only 1 TD in the biggest game of his season... probably the biggest game of his career. Lendale White had 3 as did Vince Young, heck Selvin Young (90% of America says "who?") had as many rushing TD's as "Heisman boy."

4. His Offensive linemen averaged well over 300 lbs and he had two great fullbacks leading the way for him. A lot of the season, he didn't get touched until he was 4 yards down field. On many of his runs last night, Vince got hit for the first time in the backfield and still averaged over 10 yards per carry.

3. Vince Young picked the USC defense apart, much like he's done all season, never forcing passes, but firing bullets when required and picking up yardage at will with his feet. He was the 1st NCAA QB EVER to have over 1000 yards rushing and 2500 yards passing. Anyone who watched last nights game and doesn't now think Vince Young is the best QB in College football at least over the past 10 years is smoking some good crack.
3a. Big players show up big in big games; Reggie Bush showed up to this game like a 7th grader at his first school dance: he participated and was technically there, but mostly watched from the sidelines as the big studs (Young and LenDale White) made the moves.

2. He cost his team the game: follow me on this one; remember the great long run Bush had in the 1st quarter where as he was being tackled he tried to pitch the ball to his teammate (20 year old Freshman WR Brad Walker... I was 18 as a freshman... but I guess that's another story). Only problem was... Walker wasn't looking for it and Texas recovered. Instead of USC Ball 1st and 10 from the 20 going in, it became Texas Ball. Texas went down and kicked a field goal making the score 7-3. Had Bush held onto the ball like a player deserving of the Heisman would do, USC likely would have scored a TD since they had lots of momentum going. This would have put USC up 14-0 and severely demoralized Texas.

and finally:

1. Bush was on the sidelines when USC had the ball with a chance to run the clock out and win the game. If you truly are THE BEST player in college football, your team should be able to depend on you to end the game.

For all these reasons and many others, Reggie Bush did not deserve to win the Heisman. Fortunately Vince Young had the opportunity last night to show the world why the best player in the nation wears a BURNT ORANGE Jersey!

Welcome back, KR.  Might I suggest that you cram next semester's work in this spring so that you can devote your full attention to SJU's run at the National Championship in the fall?

TDT aka Bus Driver...we know you're out there...lurking....reading our posts.  Know that our thoughts are with you.  How's your new web venture coming?

You'll get no argument from me, KR.  Vince Young is an incredible athlete and put on a clinic last night.

Good luck with school!

And here I thought games at SJU were so special and unique. I was sitting at the Capital1 Bowl on Monday with my son, a Badger student, and all of a sudden I hear the PA announcer state the following, "Open your program to page 48. If you have a Capital1 emblem stamped on this page, you have won a prize and need to report to room so and so to pick up your gift." :P

Great to see the Red and White win, something I am very accustomed to. ;) Wonderful atmosphere, marching bands from Auburn and Wisconsin both present and nice to watch a game in 80 degree weather.

Somewhat amazed at all the Baptist churches in and around Orlando. For a moment I thought I was going to find a southern campus for Bethel.

I have to agree with almost all of your comments on the game last night. The one thing that left a bad taste in my mouth is that the officials blew a lot of calls, both on the field and in the replay booth.
And how could the replay officials review calls that, at least in the NFL, are non-reviewable. Twice in the game, they reviewed calls where the officials on the field ruled that the ball carrier was down and then the ball popped out. The play is supposed to end when the whistle blows regardless, so how would the replay officials have known who "recovered" the ball if they had ruled it a fumble?

Vince Young's performance last night was one of the greatest individual performances in a football game I have ever seen. Reggie Bush is nasty, but Vince Young is disgusting. He is the biggest elusive runner I have ever seen.

Wow, what a game to watch.

I'd change my vote after last night which is why the Heisman committee should probably resync with the 'new' BCS but it remains neither you nor I could stop Vince OR Reggie.

Great breakdown, KR -- I agree 100%. Vince Young is amazing!

JR -- I'm busy updating my calendar for 2006... don't you Minnesota boys have an event coming up? Something like the Eel Pout Festival or some such thing? If I attend, do you promise to bring some of that famous burger of yours? You've been away for the board for so long -- I forget what events are coming up in your social schedule. :) Glad you had fun at the Capital One Bowl....thank goodness the Badgers wear Johnnie colors, right?

Red Hot Bennie,
You're probably busy doing other things, but your big bro sent me a picture of your new addition.  Congratulations!!!

you make great points, but one game is only one game.  I do believe your best players needs to be on the the field for the most important plays (aka bush needed to be in on 4th and 2 with two and half minutes to play). Thus, i can give no argument against what you stated for this particular game.  If history is looked at most Heisman winners have had a defining moment during the year that clinched the individual award for themselves. Examples:  Eric Crouches' reception on the TD throw back, Desmond Howard diving catch on fourth and one, Charles woodson returned a punt, and others could be named.  Reggie bush had his MOMENTS against Fresno state who was a formidable opponent, where as though Vince young's one defining moment came against a horrible Oklahoma state team.  Yet, in the title game young was huge which is undeniable and both players could have won the award easily in other years.  The last thing i have o say on the topic is if i were Vince young i would rather be the heisman runner-up and win the title than vice versa.

congrat to texas huge win with a great TEAM effort.

one last thing, ya'll would be proud.  I found some hamms for the first time in montana, it was only 11 dollars for a thirty pack,  i love the land of sky blue waters.

The Heisman Trophy has been awarded to a single player every year starting with 1935. Several men have been inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame every year starting with 1963, totaling 229. Only eight Heisman Trophy winners are also members of the Pro HOF (Marcus Allen, Earl Campbell, Tony Dorsett, Paul Hornung, Barry Sanders, O. J. Simpson, Roger Staubach, Doak Walker).

DutchFan1, good to hear from you! Hope life is good in beautiful Des Moines. Here is the winter social calendar: weekend of February 10, EelPout Festival on Leech Lake in Walker. The biggest keg party on ice in Minnesota. As luck would have it, I might be in Denver that weekend attending a seminar on financial exploitation of seniors put on by the Denver District Attorney's Office. Hopefully my daughter, who is a student at Boulder, can take her dad out snowboarding.

Second event is the BockFest at Schell's Brewery in beautiful New Ulm on Saturday, February 25. The biggest keg party on snow in Minnesota. As luck would have it, I will be handing out trophies and medals that day at the State High School girls' hockey tournament.

Looks like I might have to plan a trip to Pella in May for the Tulip Festival to make up for the events I will miss here in Minnesota.

If you do make it to Minnesota, let me know and I will get you some Stiftungsfest burger. That is assuming, of course, that you would be bringing along some Dutch letters for me. ;)

KR--couldn't agree with you more about Vince Young should have been the 2005 Heisman Trophy winner.  The best player in the nation is ready to perform in any game, no matter who the opponent is.  Looking back on the year when Texas played Okla St., they were down 28-12 at half.  And the real Heisman trophy winner Young brought the Longhorns back to win 45-28.  A true champion and loves to play under pressure.

The only disagreement I had with the game on wed. was, When texas scored their first TD Young was down before he pitched the ball and it looked like a forward toss.  I am surprised that the refs didn't review it.  Thats all I got.

WAHOO3

I don't think it was a forward pass, but his knee was definitely down as they pointed out on the broadcast. The use of instant replay wasn't very conistant.
