Geez Admit, switch from La to Sal's, jump from MIAC to Liberty League,...what's next? Cheering for Bethel?

Ouch!!   Low blow...

Didn't know I had switched boards- I haven't had many wise-ass comments to add here...   As for the Sal's switch, we were all shocked to discover that we had been traded.   As one of the La's finest former employees, I was sick to my stomach!  ;D

As a former Sal's employee, during the Prohibition Era of 97,  at that time having my first encounter with the illustrious Fins!! (The two utes...) I am happy to see the change in sponsorship...

Too bad they couldnt figure out the licensing thing to serve at Pinestock!

Johnnies playing for another national championship!
Hey, guys, the Johnnies are playing for another national championship - this time in spring football - also known as lacrosse  ;D.  They've played 3 games this week, including a great win over the Tommies.  Game recaps are below.

Lacrosse (also called or written as "lax") really is a great spring sport for football players.  #2 son has found that it helps his footwork and speed a lot (though it admittedly has kept him from bulking up some).  It's also definitely a contact sport, so there is some great hitting.  The Johnnies play for the championship against the #1 seed, the University of San Diego - whom they've already played and beaten this year.  (Sidenote: the President of USD is Mary Lyons, the former president of CSB.)

Here's a link: http://www.lacrosse.org/events/ia/recaps/mdiab06.phtml

BTW, an ex Johnnie lax player who is just finishing his final year at Stanford Law School was nice enough to come up to watch #2 son play last week.

May 10: No. 6 St. John's (Minn.) 9, No. 11 Harding 7
Junior Ben Ivory finished with three goals and three assists and goalie William Durbin registered 20 saves to lead the Johnnies past Harding in the opening round. Mickey Ramczyk scored two goals and Brian Strauss added a goal and three assists to help St. John's advance to a Thursday match-up with Upper Midwest Lacrosse League rival St. Thomas. Joe Szostak paced Harding with three goals and one assist.

May 11: No. 6 St. John's (Minn.) 8, No. 3 St. Thomas 7
The Johnnies from St. John's pulled the 8-7 upset over in-state rival No. 3 St. Thomas to advance to Friday's semifinal round where they will play No. 7 Eckerd at 10:30 a.m. at Russell Creek Park in Plano, Texas. St. John's raced out to a 4-2 lead after the first quarter of play but watched St. Thomas tie the game heading into halftime knotted at four apiece. St. John's junior attackman Ben Ivory led all scorers with four goals and two assists. The Tommies got two goals apiece from Dan Ruether and Evan Tornell.

May 12: No. 6 St. John's 10, No. 7 Eckerd 9
Freshman Brian Strauss had three goals and three assists and senior Kyle Hinner netted the game-winner with 5:15 remaining in the fourth quarter to help the Johnnies advance to their first tournament championship game. Trailing by one goal midway through the final quarter, Strauss tallied his third of the game to knot the score at the 6:27 mark, setting up Hinner's game-winner a little over a minute later. Eckerd had four shots for a game-tying goal in the final 30 seconds, but could not slip one past St. John's goalie William Durbin, who finished with 17 saves. Senior Kyle Sullivan led Eckerd, which made its first tournament appearance, with five goals and an assist. The Johnnies' defense contained Eckerd's high-scoring brother combo of Raymond and Anthony Vasilas, which finished with a combined two goals and four assists after tallying a combined 17 points in Eckerd's quarterfinal upset of Utah Valley State.

This has been bandied about publicly for around a year. They would surely be playing in the league if that came about -- I can't imagine an MIAC member playing football outside the league. :)

If SMUMN and Mac both play MIAC football they would probably try to come up with some sort of rotation where you play nine teams and hope for no ties at the top of the league. It worked out alright (no tiebreaker needed) in the MAC for a few years and the NCAC does something similar.

If just SMUMN comes in and Mac stays out then the league schedule would go back to nine games, I'm sure.

What would bring Mac back into the league?  Or is that in process?

Pat Coleman

Mac would bring Mac back into the league when Mac is ready, I believe. :)

From what I've seen of Mac lately, it will be a while before they are ready ::)

The Johnnies were up 3-1 before USD ran off 9 straight goals.  Even so, the Johnnies made a great run to the championship.

May 13: No. 1 San Diego 10, No. 6 St. John's (Minn.) 3
Top-seeded San Diego broke open a 3-3 game in the second half by outscoring No. 6 St. John's (Minn.) 7-0 to secure its second straight US Lacrosse Men's Division B IA National Championship defeating the Johnnies 10-3 at Tom Kimbrough Stadium in Murphy, Texas. San Diego sophomore Dan Barber was named Offensive MVP as he led all-scorers with four goals and one assist. Freshman Ben Tilton added three goals and two assists in the victory for the Toreros. The Johnnies scored the game's first two goals in the first three minutes and 12 seconds to take a quick 2-0 lead. Barber answered with his first goal of the game to conclude the quarter with San Diego trailing 2-1. St. John's Lance Wheeler scooped up a ground ball and deposited in the net with 14:01 left in the second quarter to increase the Johnnies lead to 3-1. San Diego would then score nine unanswerd goals to clinch the national championship.

Congrats to the Lady Wildcats softball team for the West Region championship. The only problem they will now encounter in the College World Series is a team from the MIAC, the University of St. Thomas. Two time defending national champions, ranked #1 in the nation in D3. Should the Tommies and the Wildcats meet up, the MIAC will once again dominate. You can phone it in. ;D
What? Johnnie Red cheering for the Tommies?

Too bad they couldnt figure out the licensing thing to serve at Pinestock!

Funny how that works out there. They can find a law to use when they need it, but then ignore the law when it serves their purpose. A sophomore was told by Laker last week that he couldn't have a lawyer or record the "appeal" of his suspension because they're a private institution and the law doesn't apply to them. All this over a fight over a cookie where someone got punched in the nose.
Too bad. The kid's top-notch. I guess Laker wants to piss on one last tire.

BTW, what's the deal with 3.2 beer in MN?  They used to have it in OK - where they had the amazing law that girls could buy 3.2 beer at age 18 (it was the only alcohol they could buy) but boys had to wait untiil they were 21.  As a sidelight for you lawyers, the lawsuit that challenged that law (successfully) went all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court - Craig v. Boren , 429 U.S. 190 (1976).  (Further sidelight: The judge for whom I clerked had written the opinion that the Supremes reversed, and I was able to say "I told you so" since I had argued against his decision to uphold the law.  It's nice to be right every decade or so.)
