As I wait for the dryer to finish the last load before I head north, I thought I should lat all know that that Collegeville legend, Brother Willie, will turn 90 on Tuesday. Happy Birthday Brother Willie!

When I was not quite a freshmen yet and working on the grounds crew out there, I had the pleasure of meeting Brother Willie in the wood shop.  He then proceded to show me how he uses his tongue to remove a dip of tobacco from his tin and place it in his lip because then "you don't have to worry where your hands have been."

He's quite the character!

Piperinsider, are you out there?  I hear that we were at the same wedding on June 17th.  Not sure if I talked to you or not, though. 8)

Willy Wonka

This is an actual conversation I had with my sister yesterday.

WS: I think I met one of your friends this weekend at the bar. He said he was going golfing with you soon.
WW: Oh yeah? Was his name Mongo?
WS: Umm, I don't know. He had really small eyes and looked kind of psycho though. I walked away from him as soon as I could.
WW: Yup, that's Mongo.

Mongo - Do you ever return phone calls?
I don't hate Duke. I just hate all their players, coaches and fans.

finsleft, I know you will be up north fishing this week, but you will have to let me know what time your son was on duty at the Johnnie bread counter at the Great Hall last Friday when I made a buy of some Johnnie bread. I was there around 8:00 a.m. and there was no finsleft jr. in sight.

Great weekend in Longville with the Glencoe boys. Imagine finding in my brother's cabin every issue of Playboy from 1976. :o Those must be worth something.

Hey, KR - I take it she's not a fan of Dumb and Dumber?   :D  It's hard, isn't it, when the humors are not in alignment.   :P

She loved Dumb and Dumber, just not a big Nacho fan.

Did you ever complete your homework assignment of watching Dumb and Dumber?

The downside is when others attempt to emulate.  Makes Halloween a dangerous holiday.

KR reporting in requesting advice from the veteran married fellas;

KR has a grade 2.6 awkward marital situation:

KR and Mrs KR (MKR) make it up to MKR's parent's cabin on the lake in Minnesota about once a month as it is 5 hours away and makes a great weekend getaway, the 5 hour time frame fits very well into the leave on Friday after class, get there in time for a scotch with MKR's old man and then leave noonish Sunday and make it back to Des Moines in time to order pizza..

KR's parental units live in Ohio which is 12 hours from here... obviously not doable on a normal weekend and even a push to do on a 3 day weekend (72 hours - 24 hours driving - 16 hours sleeping= 32 hours of awake time and exhausted as hell for a day or two once back to the DM).

KR's grandparents' (KRGP=85 and 83 yrs) old neighbors are having a party for  KRGPs since they are moving to a retirement village, said party is July 8th weekend 7 hours from DM in Wisconsin and KRGP and KR's mama are guilt tripping KR, MKR and all other grandkids into coming, so KR begrudgingly backed out on an SJU PHR that would have involved camping, golfing, poker, and countless beers to hang with KRGP and their incontinent 80+ yr old friends for 4 hours of the same damn cyclical alzheimer's driven conversations and spend the rest of the weekend sharing 2 hotel rooms with Mama and Papa KR, 21 year old sister, and 12 year old bro in Johnson Creek, Wisconsin... where is Johnson Creek, WI? ... exactly KR's thoughts.

The plus side is KR doesn't get to see the fam much and hasn't had a chance to do that since Easter. Also, KR hasn't had a chance to get sister properly introduced to what bars are built for since she turned 21. Also, KR's dad is a hilarious SOB especially after a couple of beers, TDT can attest to this.

Here comes the drama and whatnot; MKR has grad school classes (for physical therapy) all summer and an exam the Monday following said weekend (which is why it would have been perfect for an SJUPHR >:( ), and MKR isn't sure yet if she'll be able to make it to said Old Fart Convention (OFC) as she doesn't know how tough the test is gonna be yet.

KR's sister told KR on the phone today that KR's Mama ain't happy (when mama ain't happy, ain't nobody happy) that there is a chance MKR won't make it to the OFC. Apparently Mama KR feels slighted that KR and MKR make it to KR's in-laws every month or so and not to Ohio, apparently Mama KR doesn't own a map or understand that you can't just show up and pass exams in grad school like you can in college (engineering and chemistry classes aside).

Advice???

DOA, KR.

You're SOL on this one.  Rock?  Meet hardplace.  Catch-22 indeed.

My $.02:  Don't let this turn into a battle for KR between MamaKR and MKR-- that means zero PHRs in the future.  You're gonna catch it from one of them for a long time.  Just remember you will have the last word in every argument: "Yes, dear" (Yes, mom is also appropriate-- just don't confuse the two-- extremely inappropriate).

If it were me, I'd try to convince MJE to go and bring studying with.  Mom has a lifetime worth of guilt that she has mastered; wife is still learning it...

CLOSED CIRCUIT to KR: This is the MIAC PP and not LLPP where 3rd person is commonplace and often encouraged.  I sense a fight brewing between Skinny Mini and Mary.  What does Mary think if just you show up at this old fart reunion?  Is that acceptable or do you both have to be there?  I think this "studying" is a convenient crutch for Skinny to not have to spend time with the in-laws.

BottomLine: You better find a way to make an appearance WITH Skinny in Packer country or else you'll be on Mary/Gary's sh!t-list for a long long time.

Sincerely,

Cousin Eddie

PS-Does Skinny Mini know that you confide in MIAC and LLPP for marital advice?

KR- Welcome to dating a med student!!  ;D   (cept the distances weren't quite so great)   Granted i'm not a married MIAC PPer, and you know the ultimate outcome of my situation, but everytime this type of scenario arose with former AdmitGF, she stayed behind, which made MamaAdmit a dissatisfied customer.  However, a dissatisfied MamaAdmit was generally less of a nuisance than a dissatisfied Admit GF.  Just give MamaKR the absolute best explanation possible (i.e. reiterate the difficulty of material being covered in course at the time, duration of trip, piss-poor timing, etc) and hope for the best!

I was there, but only for the wedding. Had to get back to Hutchinson and do some work on a Saturday afternoon. Missed the open bar, which sucked. Didn't miss Hutch bars that night though.

OK, just wanted to make sure that I didn't talk to you and not know who you were.  I was the usher with the short blonde hair.  The open bar was killer.

KR, I say that Melvin's is calling your name this holiday weekend.  Gie me a shout and I'll meet you there ;D  You've got my cell #, I believe.

JEsq,
Thanks for the advice. Definitely betwixt the proverbial rock and hard place.

I believe I have Mrs KR convinced to go and bring the studying along with if I promise to help her study on the way home. Fortunately I've had most of the classes she has had, so I can help a bit.

TDT,
Mary wants both, she and her sister have the screwed up deal where they have to compete against each other for everything... yes even who has more kids at pointless family gatherings etc. Dates back to when they were teenagers. now they're in their mid 50's and still act like teenage brats fighting for their mom and dad's attention... pretty sad actually. They have literally gone years without talking to each other.
Studying isn't a crutch, she has some reeediculously hard classes this summer and she pulled a 4.0 spring semester and wants to keep that going.

She knows I consult PP's for marital advice and she's fine with it. I have more married friends on here than anywhere else, so I figured this was a way to go. Not to mention the number of individuals with experience getting out of the house for football games while maintaining happy home lives.

JA,
Yup, dating grad school students sucks. Sounds like we're going, but I'm gonna have a talk with Papa KR about how best to deal with Mama KR's guilt trips. In the words of my drunken uncle at Xmas 3 years ago when his wife wouldn't stop nagging him, "This sh*t has got to stop."

piperinsider, have you made it to the Biscay muni yet?

Anyone out there make it to the fundraiser for Michelle Bachmann last night where the Vice President made a guest appearance? I didn't think so.  :P
