Optimism or stupidity?

In a related story, Hamline's QB thinks the MIAC is wide open this year...

It was about time Sid printed his annual prediction that the Gophers will win the Big 10...I knew it was coming sooner or later...

How much fun will it be for the Goophers to be bowling in Detroit at best this year?

I would rather the Gophers make and lose a Rose Bowl than the Vikings win a Super Bowl - but neither will be happening anytime soon.

Sid Vicious is old enough where he was heavily involved with the program the last time the Gophers did make the Rose Bowl so he still holds out hope.

Speaking of B-list – there was an article in the East Side Fish Wrap yesterday about how the new stadium on the horizon is already helping out with recruiting...so instead of 7-8 oral commitments from B-list recruits, they have 13 thus far.  Ski-U-Mah!

Agreed...Detroit in mid-December should be a goal for this crew...however odd that does sound.

I'd make a joke of this, but my Gusties have somehow managed to lose to Hamline two years in a row, and even lost a basketball game to them. I don't think I deserve to make fun of the Pipers for awhile...and you don't know how much that pains me to say  :-[
I don't hate Duke. I just hate all their players, coaches and fans.

From the luncheon, one of John's timeless jokes.

His first year as head coach at St Johns and they were crushing the apponent, (St Thomas) for sure.
There were two minutes left in the game and the Johnnies had the ball on their own two yard line.
John checked to make sure everyone had played and found out the fifth string QB had not been in the game.

"Son, I need you to go in and run out the clock."

"I don't know the plays because I always run the opponent's offense in practice."

"OK, On the first play run a sweep right, on the second play, run a sweep left, on the third play you run a quarterback sneek right up the middle. On fourth play, punt."

"Now get in there."

On the sweep right the RB gained all the way out to the 50 yard line.

On the sweep left the RB gained down to the ST Thomas 20 yd line.

On the QB sneek the fifth stringer made it all the way to the 1/2 yard line.

On the fourth play he dropped back and punted!!!!! The game ended.

Walking off the field John said "Hey you did a real nice job in there but I am a little puzzled about that last play."

"You know coach, so was I. I really began to wonder what kind of coaches they have here at St. Johns????"

And just one more note. John made it clear that he still loves football more than his wife, but he still loves Peggy?(I hope that is right)  more than basketball!

It was a great time for all. The print is a terrific tribute and will be sold at the home games at a very reasonable price.  The edition is limited to 500 copies and signed by John and the artist. The original was sold at the event too.

The coaches got off easy with very few questions except how the punting game was going to be, ouch! See last year Wisconsin Eau Claire "low" lights for that explanation.

I missed my good friend Rich Hall as I will at every Johnnie event.

It was rather ironic, the last time I was with Rich was at the SAME Holiday Inn having a cocktail.

My first one is always to you Rich.

Great point, Raiderguy.  It will be tough to think of a Johnnie football event without Rich Hall.

For video of John telling the joke above, the SC Times has video of it.

I have a hard time believing Wooderson's freaking out after the second and third punt block at UWEC could be called a "low" light. I prefer to think of the BluGold quarterback running out of bounds well short of the first down of his own volition on 4th was the low light. It got my Pick'em season off to a terrible start.

On that note, who's going to offer their services for running that again this year?

I did it last year; unless anyone else wants to do it, I would be happy to run it again...

Johnnie Red

Johnnie Esq. and others, any thoughts on changing the media celeb theme from September 9 to September 2 given the fact that the Today crew will be in Collegeville on the 2nd? Might be an easier sell for local media if they know the national media will be in town. It would be nice to have the Today show at the Stiftungsfestivities.

With the new poll out what does the MIAC think of Concordia dropping in the preseason poll from last year.  Is that an accurate place for them.  What did they lose to graduation?  Do they have alot of holes to fill?
