Final score from Moorhead

MSUM 28  CC 7

Not much too say except that MSUM has a good offense, with the transfer QB from Weber State.  They just made plays and took advantage on CC turnovers.  It didn't help that CC had over 100 yds in penalties.  Tough day to be a cobb.

I took in the UST-Central game this afternoon, which Central won 17-7.  Central looked to be a tough club with a large offensive line, hardnosed running backs & pretty strong defense.

On the other side of the ball, it was a fairly solid effort by the Tommies' defense.  They gave up one TD pass late in the game on blown coverage; & another TD on a gutsy, 4th & 4 run by one of Central's tough running backs.  Otherwise I thought the Tommies defense played fairly well.  For seemingly a veteran club though, I was somewhat surprised by the number of FY they had either starting or getting time on the defense.  I counted at least 4 frosh that were playing D.

Offensively, I wasn't that impressed with the Tommies' O.  The line didn't seem to get much push off the ball, the backs didn't appear to have any pop, & but for a short spurt in the 3rd quarter, they didn't have much consistency in the passing game.  This being said, I'm sure the high quality of the Central defense influenced how the Tommies offense functioned today.  However, with the talent the Tommies appear to have, one might think that UST has the potential to have a  solid season.

Repete--yes, the Falcons have abandoned the wishbone for what they are calling a zone offense, basically one back ala Whitewater. Anderson, the featured back, will get the most touches, by far.

I was a little surprised EC did as well as they did today. They are picked just above RF, third from the bottom of the WIAC.

I suppose a Johnnie victory should be good enough, but they did not look too sharp today. The D looked pretty good, though, and should do pretty well this year. D scored the only points for SJU in the 2nd half. Offense did not look so good. Our O line really needs to work on their blocking, they looked pretty weak. We did well enough passing, I guess, but Kofoed needs to sharpen his game.
But it was great to be back in Collegeville tailgating. Lots of fun and great food. Thanks JR and everybody else. Sumander, the Lakes Meats brats were awesome. Looking forward to next week already.

I hope that UWEC is a stronger team than I thought going into the game.

My thinking going into the game was that the offense would dominate and the defense would struggle.  Guess I was 1/2 right.   :)

It's a win, I'll take it.  Offense has work to do but the talent is there.  Rolled up a lot of yards, just couldn't put the points on the board.  I expect solid, continuous improvement.  Mistakes that stopped drives today will be eliminated.  Brian Weber is going to break some big ones this year.  Defense actually played pretty well given all the new players.  Good to see J Steffensmeier playing back at the level he was before he got hurt.  Gunderson was the defensive newcomer to really stand out.

Hope to do it all again next week.

Yes, based on what I saw today I think the J's might lose one game prior to once again traveling to McMinnville and remaining undefeated against Linfield. ;D

Hats off to Bangs for a great day rushing in place of Porta.  He went for 150+ and was a real real workhorse as was Dusty Walls at Fullback.  The Defense ruled the day today for the Royals, gave up only 160 total yards of offense to BV.  Like St. Johns it sounds, could not score in the red zone.  They were there enough.  congrats to SJU and so sorry Cobbers, STU.  In all, the Beavers were never a threat, except before kickoff..

AO -- your team is going to have to compete with the preseason last-place pick in the IIAC before it can compete with those in the middle of the pack in the MIAC.

Two other interesting stats in the Royal/BV game, the Royals D held the Beavers to a minus 2 yard per carry rushing, a total on the day of -36 yard rushing against the royals, and to the Beavers credit hats off to #11( cant remember name) had 18 tackles on the books.  That is a huge day for anyone.  I believe he was an inside or outside backer.

Pat:  It is true, Northwestern had a bad day down in Mount Vernon.  Didn't score in the second half and their gimicky offense combined with a poor showing by the defense led to the loss.  You were just waiting to stick it to me, right?  What happens if Augsburg beats Wartburg who finishes at the top of the IIAC and Northwestern pounds on Augsburg?  Stick up for the little guy once in a while?  Though today, cornell was the little team that beat Northwestern.

I think the talent is there, but the execution wasn't, today.  Let the comparison's against Gustavus, St. Thomas and St. Olaf rest until there is at least a common opponent.  Those would be the middle in the miac, correct?  or maybe the cobbs are in the middle this year, after showing weakness against the occasionally strong msum dragons?

Here's the new dangerous pick, Bethel and Northwestern both get nine wins this season, but the Bethel's lone loss will not come by hands of the Johnnies.  They've got to run out of magic sooner or later up in collegeville, right?.....
