I just have to chime in on this vaunted Bethel defense that we've been hearing about.  Now, I'm sure Bethel's D is good, but come on, look at who they have played.  They shut out a Buena Vista team that is 0-2 and averaging 1.5 ppg, they gave up 17 to Simpson which is 0-3 and avg. 13 ppg, and they gave up 7 to Concordia who is 0-2 and avg. 7 ppg.  To me anyways, I don't know if it's the defense so much as it is the teams they've played.  Just my $.02.

Speaking of defenses, UST's has played exceptional every game this season. Only allowing 180 yards of total offense, 4 interceptions and giving up just above 2 yards per carry against a GAC team that was impressive on the road in their opener. The Bethel/UST game on the 30th probably won't produce much offense from either team.

Yeah, they've got this quarterback named Kofoed and this receiver named Gearman.  Ever heard of them?

Just kidding around of course.

It's apparent you're still wearing the maze blinders from seasons past, it's tough to maintain a top tier level of play year in and year out.... particulary when your stud quarterback is no where to be seen.....

No question, it's tough to swallow but we'll be thinkin' 'bout you this weekend....

If it's parents weekend come Saturday why would you want a bunch of red bearing drunk gloating Johnnie fans around?  Send out an email to Cobber alumni and remind them there's a game this weekend.

I could understand your thoughts if the cupboard was totally bare, but as I said the talent is there. It just hasn't been transferred to perform on the field as of yet.  And I am hoping that this week is the week.  Believe me I realize its a tall task, it is every time the SJU is on the other side of the field.

As for the second half of your post.  The Alumni Relations Dept is getting the word out I am sure.  I guess I was trying to extend a warm-hearted invitation to a group of fans, who in my experience, respect the game, support their team, and also know a quality opponent when they see them.

I hope I didn't have a lapse in judgement. Believe me, I would not have made the invite to BU fans ;)

Who have they found to replace Ubbhelode (sp?)?  Has anyone stepped up to stand out as much as he did?

It looks like they have had solid play all around. Paul Sommerstadt's brother Pat has always been solid for them. And it seems another Hilliard from Woodbury might turn out to be star when it's all said and done. Luke Rezac is finally healthy and playing well. Justin Thom is playing well. It looks as if there are no considerable week spots on the Tommie D as of yet. Of course I'm just going by what's on paper, I haven't gotten to see them play.  Hopefully they can stay healthy and the offense can start generating some points.

Whoa Nelly

Wasn't able to make it to Arden Hills this weekend – I had Grandpa's 87th birthday celebration, so I know how Duff is feeling.  I was a little disappointed to hear the Concordia final but my spirits were uplifted when I heard Notre Dame was kicked around by a Big Ten team in front of their home crowd.  There were many good games on throughout the day.

As I was driving from Cambridge (nephew's 1st birthday) to beautiful Plato, MN (wife's grandma's 88th birthday) on Sunday – I switched over to KFAN after the final Twins out to see how the Vikings were doing.  Not being a huge Vikings or NFL fan, it had been a while since I had listened to Paul Allen do the game on the radio.  Needless to say, it will be a long while before I do it again.  The first thing I did when arriving to Plato was grab a beer, take 3 Advil, and proceed to dominate in the bean bag toss game.  That was enough to get PA's screeching voice out of my head.

I'm all Birthday'd out...

M&G,

The cobbers will have to worry about Lofboom coming out of the backfield not only on runs but also making catches, as well as Gearman and Kofoed hooking up for the long ball.  Also, I was impressed by Keating.  He is nearly as big as Gearman and can make the play over nearly any average sized d-back.

On defense Steffensmeier and McNamara have been doing a good job of running wild from sideline to sidelinw.
I didn't do it....yet.

Alright, alright, I was trying to work at the same time.

So they are about the same size.

Yeah, I think it's Ryan's "little" brother.

Then, do as UWEC did and key on the above guys and get ripped apart by tosses to Weber.

Watch for freshman Rose who'll play if Schulte is still banged up. Or maybe even if Schulte is ready, based upon Rose's recent play?

I'm sporting a new avatar today, but it's kinda hard to read so I'll reproduce it here...

Augsburg?  Yawn...  I guess the best things that could be said is it didn't sound like there were any significant injuries and the backups got some playing time and sounded good.

---

I would have bet my house on Temple (+42).  Honestly, how were the Gophers the biggest favorite in the country--against a Div. 1-A school, at that--and then they cover?!?!?!

Oh well, I didn't have time to look for a new place to live, anyway...  No jokes about how crappy I'm doing in the MIAC Pick 'Em, please.

---

How many people here are planning on making the Concordia trip?  I might make a solo run as my brother goes to school across the river and the CC/SJU games are normally good.  At the same time, it's a boring-ass drive, I can't find anyone else that wants to make the trip, Concordia looks like they might have caught the suck this year, and the 7-day forecast is calling for 61 and rain on Saturday (which, in Moorhead, could just as easily become a windchill of 35 with rain and 60 MPH winds).  If this were fantasy football, I guess you could say I'm a game time decision.

---

I'm a pretty huge Frank Thomas fan right now.  Looks like it is close to over for the White Sox--hopefully the Twins can wrap everything up before the Sox come to town to end the year as their chances are greatly improved if they can actually set their rotation.  Even without Liriano, the improved pitching of the 7 (give or take) dwarfs in the starting rotation has me kinda liking their chances in the crapshoot that is the MLB playoffs.

(If that doesn't jinx 'em, I don't know what to say...)

---

The Johnnies obviously chose a good year to duck Northwestern, who won their big showdown with Rockford in convincing fashion (21-14 in OT).  I really think this Northwestern team can hang with the best in the MIAC.  They beat Augsburg by multiple points, SJU beat Augsburg by multiple points...

---

I don't know what to think about the Vikings.  On one hand, they are using the same formula that the Ravens, Bears, Steelers, (to a lesser extent) Patriots, etc. have used recently--good defense, offense that doesn't make big mistakes--with some success.  It still a shock to not see them blowing close games at the end.

On the other hand, they have beaten two 0-2 teams by a total of 6 points.  Yuck.

Also, PA is pretty much the best announcer ever.  YEEEESSSSSSSSS!

(As an aside to an aside, shortly after the Vikes lost to the Cardinals, PA knocked me out of a poker tournament.  I stood up and give him the "Noooooo!  PA just knocked me out of the tournament!"  I got Rube Cred.)

---

Congrats to Bethel, I guess.  Gotta love the respect you are getting in the national polls with your sweet 3-0 start.  At least you're setting yourself up for a crushing letdown on Nov. 11.
