Thanks Maize,

Ramler is a great guy.  He coached at SJU my senior year and I thought very highly of him.  I hope this is a sign of what's to come for the Hot Carls.

A tradition unrivaled...

Great job to the Cobbers yesterday.  In my opinion, the J's were lucky to get out of there with a win.  Thank God for the big play and Concordia turnovers because the J offense really looked terrible most of the time.  One could say that the Concordia defense had a lot to do with it, and they Concordia D probably did have something to do with it, but the J offense usually moves the ball a lot better than what they did yesterday.  Outstanding goal line stand by the D!  The J post season, provided they make it there, will be short lived unless the o line learns to push off rather than being pushed into and back.  I'd like to see SJU with a good pounding back like Crowley again.  It would have been  a long drive back to Mankato had they lost and they should have lost.

One more thing:  What in the heck was Jimmy G thinking punting on 3rd down?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?  Brutal call.  Just brutal.  The Cobbers need to get new helmets.  The white numbering on the jersey makes the uniform a lot less drab but the helmets have got to go.

What do you suggest for helmets?  Maroon with a white striped down the middle?

Cobber and others-
WHat was up with the QB switch on Saturday?

WHat was up with the QB switch on Saturday?

They were practicing that all week to have Nelson go in as QB and Rodel at WR.  Nelson I thought did a good job coming into a big game like this, the only mistake was the fumbled snap on the 1 yd line.  QB rollout on 4th down not a good call, gotta give the ball to Williamson to pound it in!  I think we will see a lot more of Nelson this season at QB.  He is the future signal caller of Cobber football!

M&G, what was your opinion on the one play CC ran where they brought in Scott Schumacher, 3rd string QB, and lined him up as one of the wing backs and I'm assuming were trying to run an option pass?  I personally thought it was quite obvious what the play was going to be, and judging by the result, an 8 yard loss, the Johnnie D knew what it was going to be as well.

I can only assume that they were really trying to throw the J's for a loop by having their 1st, 2nd, and 3rd string QB's all on the field at the same time.

That's not a great play call by the cobbers in that situation.  We had moved the ball from the 10 or 15 to the 50 by running for 1st downs.  Then they call the option pass on 1st down, which brings 2nd and 18 after the 8 yd loss.  We ended up punting, who knows we could've moved the ball further down the field to get some points.

In the MIAC game summaries put out by "College Sporting News", the reporter refers to a SJU "drop kick" in the 2nd quarter. Doesn't he mean "quick kick"? Or maybe the results were so bad, it looked like a drop kick. With today's big play pass offenses, that's a call you don't see very often.
Coincidentally, Augsburg pulled off a quick kick on Saturday to perfection- the 3rd down punt going 53 yards down to the 1 yard line.

Thanks Cobber. Seems to me that QB is not one of those positions where you want to shuffle players, barring injury. WHy not just go with Nelson then? One QB has a lot to do with the rhythm and flow of the offense.

Johnnies barely win, no spinach, at least we have this to look forward to...http://news.aol.com/entertainment/music/articles/_a/george-michael-starts-first-tour-in-15/20060924091909990001?ncid=NWS00010000000001

Scrolling back a few pages, I find most of what I could say about the Cobber-Johnnie game has been said. Despite the Cobbers walking off once again with the "moral victory" and SJU with the "W", I have to add that it was an incredibly fun afternoon as we were treated to the matchup that for the last several years has lived up to pregame expectations.

Obiously, from here on out the Cobbers play for pride. On Saturday we saw there was still plenty to be proud of. Hopefully the  Johnnies keep the MIAC playoff winning percentage up this year as well.

In other irrelevant matters, the Cobber helmets are just fine. If you want a nasty helmet, see Jamestown (ND) College. Ouch!
If the human brain were so simple that we could fully understand it...we would be so simple that we couldn't.

Whoa Nelly

Negatives from the Weekend:
1.) Being in AleX/C for a wedding and not in Moorhead
2.) Being pulled over for expired tabs - we moved and the DMV renewal never made it to our new address.
3.) Writing out a check to Dakota County for $97
4.) Realizing Isaac Flenner doesn't text message and frantically trying to find a game update source during the 1st hymn of the wedding
5.) Being pinched to the point of bruising by my wife for rapid text messaging during a wedding.
6.) The drive home

Positives from the Weekend:
1.) Finally getting a text response from Fat Head during the sermon - Cobbs up 10-0...
2.) Free Beer
3.) Wedding Cake
4.) Omelet and flap jacks at the Travelers Inn in AleX/C on the way out of town
5.) My wife spent $0 at the Outlet Mall on the way home
6.) Pizza Delivery
7.) The awesome nap I took during the 2nd half of the Vikings game

You are right on.  It was supposed to be a halfback pass I would guess. The problem was as you said, everyone knew it. THey need to get him on the field a couple other times in different situations to not let it be such a give away.

It is waaaaaaaaaay to early for BU/SJU predictions. I understand that you all love trash-talking, but lets let some weeks go by before we get too riled up. But since we already are predicting monkey stomps, I might as well put my two cents in.

SJU 27
Bethel 7

St. Johns scores three touchdowns on drives of less than 45 yards after Bethel offense turns it over, giving the Johnnies a short field. The BU defense, being on the field for 42 out of 60 minutes, cant do it all. The other Johnnie touchdown comes on an interception return. That way we have the required 4 turnovers per game by Bethel.

CCKnight (or any other Carleton poster :D),

How is this year's Carleton team different from those of previous years?  Has Ramler totally revamped offense and defense?  What type of offense are they running?

Maybe with a few wins under their belts, we'll get a couple more Hot Carls on the board???

Carleton's increased numbers and improved recruiting is starting to pay off.  We have more talent, that is more experienced, at more positions than times when our football team numbered in the low 40's.  There is both a new offense and a new defense but after watching the game on saturday it looked like the more important issue was the talent and experience level combined with the team being ran correctly.  Often times during the Brann era things looked like they were being run like a fire drill.  It looks like Ramler has everybody on the same page and that they seemed pretty confident in their roles both offensively and defensively.  On Saturday, the defensive line was spectacular, linebackers really great, and the secondary was solid.  Our offense needed to find consistency, but as noted by others, Bethel's defense is pretty good. Obviously one upset win doesn't erase question marks after years of futility, but as a Carleton alum who didn't like the way the program was ran under brann (other than the recruiting), the professionalism which ramler was showed on Saturday was impressive.

a lot of the seniors got plently of clock as freshmen and sophs and they were also a pretty good class of recruits...a future problem for carleton might be this years freshman class...i think they only have 3 or 4 freshmen because of the coaching change....i also heard Brann got the school to let a few more players in who were very good students prolly around 3.7gpa and high test scores that usually would not have gotten in

No reason to rip Bethel anymore, I guess. One loss and they'll either do it for you or implode.

See, this is where football will start the demise of the whole school. Trying to build a program, you let in a bunch of dumbasses with 3.7 gpa's and high test scores, pretty soon the whole school is dumbed-down.
