I don't think CC has any chance of winning this weekend, but I also don't think we will see the Big Red Machine that typically rolls the Knights on an annual basis.  Granted, C-M and CC's defenses are worlds apart, but Crees didn't seem very comfortable in the pocket on Saturday, which may have been attributable to the O-Line.  Either way, I think the Johnnies run the ball quite a bit and (barring a Monmouth-esque performance from Carleton) that keeps the score down.

Also, for once there is a non-zero chance that Carleton's offensive theme music isn't the song that they always play at circuses.  Which is something new and different.

Just a little comparison on defenses vs a like opponent (which is all we really have to go on at this point) in this case Bethel:

Carleton Defense:
BU rushing yards: 77
BU passing yards: 156
BU score:  14

Concordia Defense:
BU rushing yards: 216
BU passing yards: 137
BU score:  21

This could always be attributed to a bad game for the cobbers, but I guess we'll get the second data set after this saturday.

A lot better than tearing my ACL and meniscus, I bet.

(Obviously, I'm joking.  I hope for as speedy and painless a recovery as is possible.  As a sign of my unending compassion, I decided against adding "But you'd have to ask your wife.  She'd know." to what I wrote above.)

Congrats to Carleton on the huge win.  I love to see Bethel lose to anybody, but last week's game was especially sweet.

But you seem like a bright guy--I know you're not taking those numbers above without a huge grain of salt.  If we just look at comparisons based on common opponents, then you would have to believe that not only is CC's defense better than C-M's, but that CC would beat C-M overall.  I think we can all agree that 0-3 C-M would be favored over 3-0 CC.

And, as you said, we'll have another data point after this weekend.  I have a lot more respect for Carleton than before the season started, but I don't think the numbers are going to be in their favor after this weekend.

Ha!  I just noticed MR deleted his earlier post.  When I first read it, I just assumed he wrote it in jest.  Either way, it's been quoted for the world to see!

TC-
I apologize for my comment (in case you saw it, but has since been deleted by a moderator), but I honestly think you are out of place saying that when my wife seriously injured herself...what's up with that?

If you were joking, I am sorry because it is hard to tell sometimes on these boards!

Mighty Royal

All cool, MR.  I'm sure your quip will be deleted from my reply.  I may be a classless asshole, but I'm not a genuinely hateful classless asshole.

MR, I went through that injury. I hope she recovers well and quickly.

TC, you can modify your post and eliminate the quote if you want.

I was checking my mail one afternoon back in 2004 and I came across a letter postmarked Minnesota with no return address. When I opened it, all it contained was a newspaper clipping about the Cobbers beating the Johnnies in football. I thought it was the funniest thing that I had somebody anonymously serving me my piece of humble pie long distance. I called my dad and had him Sherlock Holmes around to see if he could find out who sent it. Well, it turned out that it was sent by our close family friend named Lois. She actually meant to include a letter, but she was so gleeful over the win that she forgot to put it in the envelope. Lois has one daughter that went to Concordia and one that went to Gustavus. We would always engage in some good natured trash talking during the football season. As an avid Viking and Twin fan, she totally understood my love of the game and my team. She is the reason I have such a soft spot (and respect) for both the Cobbers and the Gusties. I found out last night that she has been placed in a hospice. While she could rally, it is unlikely (she is in her early nineties). I have told her about "the board" before and I know she will get a kick out of being mentioned on here. :)

Here is something to offset all the sad things posted lately...Lois, the unfortunate injury to Chuck Norris's competition for MR's affections... ;)

19 THINGS IT TOOK ME 50 YEARS TO FIGURE OUT, by Dave Barry

1. Never under any circumstances take a sleeping pill and a laxative
on the same night.

2. If you had to identify, in one word, the reason why the human race
has not achieved, and never will achieve, its full potential, that
word would be "meetings."

3. There is a very fine line between "hobby" and "mental illness." Does this board count as a hobby? ;)

4. People who want to share their religious views with you almost
never want you to share yours with them. I think this applies to politics too! ::)

5. And when God, who created the entire universe with all of its
glories, decides to deliver a message to humanity, He WILL NOT use,
as His messenger, a person on cable TV with a bad hairstyle.

6. You should not confuse your career with your life.

7. No matter what happens, somebody will find a way to take it too
seriously.

8. When trouble arises and things look bad, there is always one
individual who perceives a solution and is willing to take command.
Very often, that individual is crazy.

9. Nobody cares if you can't dance well. Just get up and dance.

10. Never lick a steak knife.

11. Take out the fortune before you eat the cookie.

12. The most powerful force in the universe is gossip.

13. You will never find anybody who can give you a clear and
compelling reason why we observe daylight savings time.

14. You should never say anything to a woman that even remotely
suggests that you think she's pregnant unless you can see an actual
baby emerging from her at that moment.

15. There comes a time when you should stop expecting other people to
make a big deal about your birthday. That time is age eleven.

16. The one thing that unites all human beings, regardless of age,
gender, religion, economic status or ethnic background, is that, deep
down inside, we all believe that we are above average drivers.

17. The main accomplishment of almost all organized protests is to
annoy people who are not in them.

18. A person who is nice to you, but rude to the waiter, is not a
nice person.

19. Your friends love you anyway.

HAVE A GREAT DAY!

I believe the answer is yes - which only validates Barry's observation.   8)

I can't believe that no one has commented upon KR's mentioning that  Mauer " launched his dong." a few pages back. I've heard that it is untrue that porcupines can launch their quills, but this is something I would never have believed possible.

DUDE: They're going to cut off my johnson.
DONNY: What do you need that for Dude.

I have a Cobber friend in the Wing who graduated with Horan. He made a visit up to Concordia to visit this summer. He has NOT sent an email or called since Saturday.

See what your Johnnies have done? You're allowing a beautiful friendship of 20+ years to decay with your insistence on always winning. Shame on you.
I don't hate Duke. I just hate all their players, coaches and fans.

Just made my Pick'em choices. Go ahead and copy mine if you wish. Most of you guys will never catch me. Picked the Hot Carls only because of the awful spread. SJU still wins 20-14.

Bet a Hamm's on it!

johnnie_esq

Hey, the goal of those spreads is to make it tough to pick one or the other.  That it is an "awful" spread means the committee has done its job!!!  Besides, the straight-up pick-em last year was somewhat uneventful, as there were very few games that could have gone either way...

Leave my committee alone!!!!  ::)

But don't forget to make your picks-- first game is 12:30 tomorrow, I believe.

Just razzing ya Esq.  :-*

I do like the spreads better than straight-up picks. Thanks again for doing it. But 20.5?? I see you even took the points.  ???
Hope we're both wrong.
