USTBench

Well not much football going on for Benchwarmer on Saturday, I was in Lynchburg, VA taking the LSAT. Hopefully I put up better numbers than UST's offense. Then it was off to Manasass to watch Motley Crue and Aerosmith. I did take in my first NFL game last night. The Redskins and Jags. Great game, of course it helped that I was sitting field level and getting free hot dogs all night. Gotta love females with sweet office perks that don't like football.

My hat's off to Lone Auggie Backer and the inside perspective on the Cobber-Augggie game. Augsburg did a (surprisingly) excellent job picking apart our young secondary early in the game. Standout performance from Augsburg from my perspective were 1) coaching, 2) quarterback play, 3) receiver #80--don't have my memory or program with me, and 4) punting. Now I find out LAB is the punter!

Is Concordia down? It's still hard to say because the season started off so poorly and the SJU annual stunner took it's emotional toll, I'm sure. Where the Cobbers have been exploited is in the defensive backfield, particularly on the gadget plays. There is speedy but young talent in those positions. I suspect (and hope) there will be a rapid learning curve. With that hole plugged, the D should be strong.

Offensively, they are obviously plotting a course for the future in swapping out Nelson and Schumey the Younger. Both appear capable, but a film review will be necessary to see who had the edge on Saturday. I still see the Cobbers finishing strong this season.

Augsburg plays a very young team. If Saturday was any indication as to where they are headed, they should be turning the corner in another year or two.

On the downside, a game at Edor Nelson Field is to the college football experience what the Stop-n-Go Deli is to fine dining.

It would have been so nice to have Michelle Bachmann present and watch her and Fins get into it. >:(

I heard she was there, JR, but she was hiding in the bushes.  ;)

Wow, what a weekend.

I woke up yesterday morning (after celebrating a Johnnies' victory from 9 am to midnight) on a couch in St. Joe at 8 am.

Still wearing the same clothes, I drive to MPLS and hear on the way the Tigers lose and my tickets for Sunday baseball are suddenly golden!  Get to the game, and look to my immediate left and there is the Puckett seat.   There is no way we can lose!  Hunter's home run bounces off the guy's head 1 row down and 6 seats to the right of me.  Yep, we're gonna win.  Mauer gets his second hit on the day and seals the battings title.  I think my head's gonna explode.

Twins win!!  30,000 Twins rubes stick around and watch "The Gambler" choke away a division title to us....PANDEMONIUM!!!!

BEST WEEKEND EVER!!!!!!
I didn't do it....yet.

CCKnight

Beautiful weather up in collegville last Saturday, unfortunately my Knights had a bad 3rd quarter and couldn't get the job done.  An exciting game to watch and hopefully the team learned some things about themselves that can be applied to the rest of the season.  I really thought the knights had a shot going into halftime, but the offense couldn't get anything going in the 3rd and the johnnies had amazing field position for the entire quarter.  I think our D probably got a little tired with all of the 3 and outs and the johnnies capitalized on some big plays putting Carleton in a hole that was a little too big to climb out of.  Hats off to both teams on a entertaining game and hopefully the knights can rebound next weekend and stomp the Tommies.  It was a lot of fun to watch the knights actually compete against St. Johns, and I think it may be the first time I can remember St. John's starters actually playing the whole game against the knights.  I really think the knights have a legitimate shot to finish in the top of the league this year if they can stay focused and avoid injury.

well - sounds like it was a great weekend in Collegeville.

My question is, is CC for real?  Sounds like a lot of people were impressed with their performance.  I know there were a lot of variables, backup QB, etc...but was staying with the Johnnies enough to get some national love down the road?  Is CC the favorite for #2 in the MIAC now?  just wondering what some people thought who have seen some of the games.

Carleton and UST could be one of the best games this week. Never thought I'd say that.

Whoa Nelly

A few things surprised me this weekend.  Knights staying with the Johnnies, Auggie Tech staying with the Cobbers, and then watching the Twins Division title unfold yesterday.  Playoff baseball is the ultimate in suspense – I can't wait.

P.S. Keeping in mind I was watching an average Gophers team (average=bad) all night, the most entertaining form of athleticism took place on the LRT from Metrodome to the Warehouse district.  A goofy looking college student in a purposely undersized sweatshirt whose friends were calling him Frank the Tank (he very much looked the part) was offered a $5 bet.  Get off at the Nicollet Mall station and beat the train on foot to the Warehouse platform.  The entire train was cheering for him to take the bet, as the doors were beeping and about to shut, he bolted down 5th street, looking about as athletic as Will Ferrell running drunk and naked in Old School.  Through the darkness no one could spot him, & as the train approached, he was on the deck waiting and dancing around like Rocky on the top steps in his gray sweat suit.  Great theatre as the entire train car was cheering for the guy when the doors opened.

I think a lot is going to unfold this weekend with the Johnnie/Ole game. Its been hard to measure how good teams like Bethel and Concordia really are. Cocordia is still trying to find their QB and has a young O-line. Bethel loses to Carleton but outgains them 233/163 and has 4 turnovers. Teams have been hard to measure against SJU as well because of Kofoed going down. When SJU/Cobber game is 2 pts but SJU beats Auggie by 60; whereas, Cobbers go into OT with them - you have to throw the comparison out the window. I guess we'll just have to see what unfolds on Saturday. I hope the weather is as nice as this last weekend.

Also just a little analysis on the SJU/Worm game, and I apologize if someone else already said this ---
When is the last time SJU only completed 9 passes in a game and have they ever allowed over 350 yards offense by Carleton before?

USTBench, you are right, the two should match up well.  Their was a great matchup on the O and D Lines for both teams at Bethel on Saturday. I believe the Royals Center Tommie Davis, and USTs Mike Rouse attended the same high school together.  Both are animals, and it was fun to watch those 2 go at it all day.  I think both beat the hell out of the other.  The tommies are tough, and it will be interesting to see how the CC UST matchup comes out, after seeing both teams, I am kind of leaning towards UST in this one.  As the week heats up, the real talk will be about the potential championship game looming with SJU and the Oles.  All kinds of scenarios here, but I think it is safe to say SJU has played the better teams so far this year and are still perfect.  An Oles win changes a lot of things in the MIAC.
