The offense looked sporadic and inconsistent at best.  They do not have a leader at all and the 0-line needs to learn to pass block.  I get nervous every time Koefed drops back and passes the ball.  Presuming that we make it to the post season, we will not get far unless the o and the d backfield, to a certain degree, kicks it up a couple of degrees.  While we have great coaches, the 2000 team had leaders like Linneman, Moore, the entire defense, Kirchner and the 2003 team had Keating, Elliot, Hood, etc.  For this team, there's Gearman on offense as a leader and that's it.  The d has Steffansmeister (as they pronouce it at STO) and that's about it.  When Koefed makes a bad play or things don't go right he comes off and hangs his head.  He needs a confidence boost or something.  I would not predict a playoff run at all right now.  Bethel and St. Thomas are very possible losses.

I did not see the contest in Collegeville yesterday, but listened to spots on the radio and kept updated on this website.  Thanks to those who posed the updated scores.
With 3 games to go, SJU is undefeated....that' says a lot.  Barring a huge letdown next week vs. Hamline  (remember Homecoming in 1994 - the Kurt Ramler "coming out party"?), we will be watching 2 championship/play-off games vs. UST and Bethel.  I think the Johhnies offense will continue to find ways to win and the defense will keep getting better.  I like this team - a contender for a national title?  Maybe not, but I think they are coming together.  Baring a catostrophic injury (ala Justin Beaver), this team made hit its stride on October 28 in St. Paul, then have a week off to prepare for a Bethel monkey stomp!!
This IS the same group of coaches that put together a championship season in 2003 and made a run to the Stagg Bowl in 2000....anything is possible!!

Go, Johnnies!!

Mac, welcome back to the board.  Can you talk your buddy Dr. Dirk into coming back too?

I echo the welcome back sentiments, Mac77!

True, Kofeod is not perfect, the o-line is not perfect, the defensive backfield is not perfect...but look at it this way, 7-0 is perfect, and that's how the Johnnies are sitting right now.

We're at a point in the season when it's quite early to discuss a deep play-off run.  Hamline is on the radar right now, and that's it.  We don't beat the Pipers, and we're not going to get into the play-offs.

Like mentioned, this team does not look ready to take the next step yet, but there is a lot of time left and we have the best coaching staff in D3.  Look at the 2001 squad who started off 0-2?  Did anyone think they'd end up the season like they did?

Bring on the Pipers!

Despite the fact that the potentially most boring Sunday Night Football with John Madden's worthless comments included is the only thing on right now, I am still not gonna re-read the 14 pages of posts I missed since I left for Northern North Dakota on Friday.

Comments from the weekend:
1.  When the directions include "go to Fargo then turn North" you're in for a long frickin' drive especially if you're coming from iowa.

2.  Having the wrong date for a wedding in your head and not realizing you're wrong until the day before when the wedding is 9 hours away is expensive. MrsKR took my mistake as justification for spending $300+ on a new outfit to wear for the wedding.

3.  Even when you get to your in-laws house at 1am and still have 5 hours to drive the next morning to get to the wedding, when your father-in-law wakes you up at 4:30 to ask if you'd rather go duck and then pheasant hunting, it's damn tempting.

4.  The wedding was 70 miles from the Canadian border and 151 miles from Winnepeg. That too was damn tempting, but not as tempting as driving past exit 156 on I-94 at 9AM.

5.  The Minnesota/ND accents get thicker as you get farther north (nord).

6.  When there is open bar for 2 hours, you can finish 3 scotches, 2 beers, 2 Jack and Cokes, and a Jag bomb if you're motivated enough.

7. JR and my Badger's annhialated the goofy Gophers.

8. The wedding was a good time as all Johnnie-Bennie weddings in my experience have been.

9.  We (SJU fans) are damn spoiled when we're upset with a 34-7 in-conference win.

Not sure what to say about the game in Moorhead yesterday!  It was frustrating to watch.

St. Olaf has an explosive offense, the O line for them looked great.  QB was poised and got passes off quickly and receivers were all over the place.  Their defense...don't know what to say.  CC offense kept giving them the ball by dropping it on the ground.

The D-line was silent for the Cobbs.  Nobody was getting into the backfield, STO has positive yardage on almost every play.  CC inexperienced DB's looked....well inexperienced and that's what STO attacked.

Johnnie faithful, you were right about the slot left, TE right passes that go for 40+ yds.  STO had a 91 yd TD pass off of that.  As our FS who was in cover 2, read run on a not so good play action.  Bad read by the FS, he was at the line of scrimmage when the ball was thown and our CB couldn't catch the TE/WR.

There was some life in the cobbs at the beginning of the 2nd half, by forcing Olaf to punt on a 3 and out.  Score on that drive, force a fumble on the kickoff.  Only to give olaf the ball back on the next play by a fumble.  STO I think scored almost half their points of CC turnovers (4).

Keep your heads up Cobbs and keep playing hard.

By the way:

Cover 2 is when the safety sits 10 yds off the ball and read pass only!

Touchdown Tommy

Oh no the sky is falling.  The Johnnies are 7-0 fellas.  C'mon keep things in perspective.  Life is good.

BIG GAME: Olaf at Bethel next Saturday...lots of MIAC title implications from this game

Johnnie Red: You didn't find your daughter shacked up with any of my cousins did you?   :o  :o

KR: Mr. Martinka is always watching you, even at 4:30am in the morning.  Scary...

Question to those at the Johnnie game yesterday: Is Kofoed the man to take the J's to the Stagg Bowl?  Is he the best we have?  How were the throws yesterday? Lots of wounded ducks?  What are your thoughts on that thumb he has been nursing for at least a month now?

Fins, Veek et al did a great job with the meats and fixins' for the game.  Small crowd but a nice sunny, though windy, day.  Enjoyed seeing/meeting everyone.

We're gonna miss the Pace Arrow for the Bethel game, especially if the wind is blowing as it was Saturday.  It's a terrific wind-break.

FYI, the CA kid on the team was not wearing long sleeves - though it looked like some of the MN kids were!  :o

I'll send ROR pics I took at the Festivities.

Kofoed is 24-3 as a starter. Granted, two of the three losses were the turnover-happy games to St. Olaf (2004) and Whitewater last year. The other being the 21-20 loss to Concordia (2004).

Cobbernation,
The Oles must have taken that play out of the Johnnie play book. SJU scored twice on that play against the Oles. I don't recall seeing the Oles run it at all on Oct.7.

Johnnie Esq;  Where have you been on game day?

I share your pesimism.. but only to a point.

Dusty-- I haven't been up to campus much this fall.  Credit work with the HS team and work around the house.  I am hoping to get up there this Saturday, but as of this morning it isn't looking good, as I went into my kitchen this morning and was promptly dropped on by a leak from my shower.  Sounds like a Saturday project, unfortunately.

If I can fix it by Saturday, I will be there with bells on.

WAHOO3

I haven't taken the time to figure out what Kofoed did on Saturday for you guys to get so down on him, but I agree w/ all of you and think that Crees should play out the rest of the season.  :)

I can't figure our the Cobbs. I'm a huge fan of their coaching staff and they have had recruiting classes of 70+ for the last few years. It seemed that they would have no problem filling the holes that were left by Shoe, etc. It just looks like their O-line still hasn't really come around and that whoever is playing at QB doesn't have the ability to make the same types of plays. I'm sure they will be back in the top 3 soon, but I didn't expect an off year.
Regardless, its great to have the Troll trophy back at Olaf.... by far the ugliest rivalry trophy ever.
