And as I said, I dropped some actual facts in. Sorry that was so distressing.

Royal and MR:
If you ask TDT why he hates Bethel so much, and he gives you his reasons, valid or not, what is the point of trying to disprove his opinion? It's like politics, you can say why do you hate that candidate, and when reasons are given, believe me and ROR, you are not going change that person's mind or even get them to understand they are wrong.
Although I will say this, back in the early 90's, especially '92, there were some things that Bethel coaches did that did not sit well with SJU supporters. And I am sure there were times when SJU coaches did something that Bethel supporters didn't like-that is how dislike takes root.

SJU56321, once the Johnnies get in the the post season, I will be rooting them on, as will just about everybody else in here.  Its MIAC football.  What ever happened in 93 or 4, I cant comment on. But that is not what BU football is about now.  Their is too much at stake for stupid mistakes.  Cheap shot football is just stupid, and the BU coaches do not stand for it.  They have expectations of making the post, and know it has to happen through SJU. Gotta love  Johnnie football, two weeks to go against their 2 biggest Rivals, Tommies, and Royals and they have the first round of playoffs on their schedule... Beautiful...

Yeah your right with your facts about Roney, glad to see you can read Reusse's column since you are almost quoting the piece verbatim.  I approach our discussion from this perspective, that was then, this is now.   I know that SJU has won 8 or 9 in a row vs. UST, and even though SJU comes in the heavy favorite I believe UST can play with SJU.  Time will tell, and if you are right then I will expect the gloating and chest bumping that seems to come with every SJU win from the proud Johnnie alums on this board.  If I am right you can expect a more sedate response.

Have a nice day.

Lots of schools put the playoffs on their schedule, whether merited or not. I've seen some pretty ridiculously low teams still list the first round of the playoffs.

Pat, I meant it as a compliment to Johnnie football.  They expect to be there. They should.  Or was it a back handed compliment?  Have to ask TDT

Is it time for my annual Gagliardi/Johnson rivalry post?  Whether rumor or fact, it still sounds pretty good!  I was saving it for next week though...

Knights, the Johnnie/Tommie rivalry is always a game where you can throw the records out the window.  That said, the current crop of Tommies don't seem to have the same bitterness toward the Johnnies as did their alumni.  Now that UST is huge, their student body doesn't care to get into a rivalry with a small school like SJU, however successful the Johnnies are.  So while UST can play with SJU, I just don't see the emotional aspect of the rivalry giving them that "extra" incentive needed to pull out a close one, and I think the Johnnies can pull away in the second half.  Not a blowout, but a solid win.

All that said, I think the pressure is on UST this year.  They got embarrassed last year by SJU at home; Reusse all but noted Roney needs to beat SJU; and this would set the record for the longest losing streak in the series.  SJU needs to win to tie for another conference title and likely a playoff birth; but the Johnnies get second chance for both next week, so I think there is pressure on UST for this one.  The Toms will come out fired up, but if they get down early, they may press a bit and make mistakes.

I'm looking forward to the QB match-up between the 2 Rocori boys, Kofoed and Sauer. Both will need to be sharp on Saturday. I really like Sauer and think it's a good move by the Tommies to start developing the team around him for the next 3 years. Johnnie D has been awfully tough though so the kid will be facing quite a challenge.

In response to the cheap shot claims, I just dont see it. And yes, I was actually on the team. I'm not saying it didnt happen. I know we had some guys on the offensive line who had EXTREMELY bad tempers who were prone to some punches in the pile, but aside from that, I never once heard of or saw any infractions in my years on the team where I would say, wow, we are a bunch of dirty players. That said, I wasnt on the opposing side. If I had to nominate the biggest cheap shot artisits, my money is on St. Thomas. I would have guys gouging at my eyes in the pile after i was in on a tackle, and that would happen repeatedly.

QuoteSteve Johnson:  Do you know the guy personally...oh, yeah, I forgot, you just criticize him for "mistakes" he makes w/o looking at all the good he does...if you would have gone to BU, you would have seen a guy that is awesome for the school, the football program, and commits everything he is to being a coach/teacher with character and integrity...you need to get your freakin' facts straight..also, remember, no one is perfect.....NOT EVEN GAGS!

MR- Did you actually play football? (This is not ripping on you or anything, it is an integral part of the understanding of what goes on in the program, and I read earlier that you were a soccer player) Because the face he shows to the rest of the school and the parents and the recruits is a far different one than he shows to some of the members of his team. Lets just say I dont have a very high opinion of the guy.

And whoever asked about Ross Mullenberg, he blew out his knee in two consecutive seasons, and while he is healed now, he isnt getting many reps. Too bad, he was awesome his frosh year.

One night at Cheers, Cliff Clavin explained the "Buffalo Theory" to
his buddy Norm:

"Well ya see, Norm, it's like this. A herd of buffalo can only move
as fast as the slowest buffalo. And when the herd is hunted, it is
the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This
natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the
general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the
regular killing of the weakest members. In much the same way, the
human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells.
Excessive intake of alcohol, as we know, kills brain cells. But
naturally, it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In
this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain
cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine! That's
why you always feel smarter after a few beers."

Someone hand me a Hamm's - haven't had the morning beer yet and it's going to be a tough day so I need to get smarter right away.  8)

I'll address all your points:

I haven't seen as much cheap crap from BU lately, but when I played (99-02), you were notorious for extra curriculars, and I can remember more than one O-lineman that were total asses.

MR was a converted soccer player and kicked for BU for a bit, I believe.

Thanks for the Mullenberg info.  That sucks, he was a solid player.

Fins,

Our high school team played against Sauer when he was a Senior at Rocori! He ate us alive! It certainly helped that he had a receiver like Eric Decker to throw to though!  :D

If he makes the kind of progress one would expect, by his jr and sr year he could be a real force!

Didn't Jansen also start as a sophomore, displacing Lockrem, who had displaced Fritze as a sophomore?

Do you see a trend here?

I think I mentioned this on the board before, but when Fins, Jr. was about 13 years old and I was coaching his Babe Ruth team, they stuck us with 2 Cold Spring kids, Sauer and Decker.  ;D Good athletes and great kids to have on the team.
I was a really good coach that year as we won the league championship.
