Thanks, ROR.... were there any "contests" to write home about?

No "contests" of any kind.  Most of the participants from last year were absent.  Those present were encumbered by wives, girlfriends, etc.  :'(

SJU faithful at the game--Curious to any "true" assessment of the UST squad, if you are interested in chiming in?  Nothing personal will be taken from your comments (assuming it is more than ....suck, which is so over) just seeking honesty from some other football minds.

I thought the defense was pretty solid.  The defense gave up only 14 points to a pretty talented offense.

The offense was bad.  I thought Sauer seemed a little more poised this year.  Last year he seemed scared or overwhelmed or something.  However,  the result wasn't much different.  No play-makers on offense.  Gunderson was living in the UST backfield.  Being down on the field I could see how discouraged the offensive line was coming back to the huddle after many plays.

The Tommies WERE who we THOUGHT they were!  If you want to crown the Johnnies, crown their asses!

Great day on Cretin today. Thanks JR for the burgers once again. I was travelin light today. Good to see all the folks at the tailgate. Young and old red-clad fans and a few purple guests, too.
All in all, a fairly solid performance today by the J's. The turnovers were bothersome, but the game was played essentially in the UST end of the field. Johnnies moved the ball pretty well against a pretty decent defense. Kofoed did make some nice tosses and there were some beautiful catches as well. Would like to see a little better blocking still on the running plays, but on the pass, Kofoed seemed to have all the time he needed. But the story again is the D. Sauer is going to be seeing red numbers coming at him in his sleep tonight. A lot of them will be 9 & 8. Gunderson was reedickulus, but the whole front D was pretty damn good. Most of UST's offensive yards were an a few long passes, and Sauer laid in a couple of beauties today. But mostly, he just had no time and spent the afternoon running for his life.
Dusty-good call on the down markers, I thought it was just my feeble eyes. Maybe Best Buy could pony up a couple hundred more bucks and put their logo on. Also, put your frickin speakers on the other side of the field so they face the crowd instead of bouncing the sound off of the wall across the field.
Knights- you need some better pass blocking so Sauer has time to throw.  UST lost in the trenches today. Good luck the rest of the way.

Enjoyable day in the (mostly) sun with Buckman, Larry and Zosh. And thanks Duff, for the pre-game Glueks. Nice nod to the 2 Rocori QBs with a brew from Cold Spring.
Thanks also to Grandpa Wooderson for the new joke I got to tell to Mark Kennedy today before the game. ;D

All of this football talk is making me thirsty. (Dusty, this is tough!) 2 weeks to beat up on Bethel posters.
Time for a bedtime Hamm's and cookies before I fall back.

Hats off to Johnnie Red for a fabulous shindig on Cretin Avenue today.  Sure is fun to see a sea of RED in the O'Shaughnessy parking lot.  JR, I do have a couple of photos of you and that guy in the Cathcart jacket.  I'll send them your way.

I busted a gut when Fins told MK that joke.  I'm sure he'll be repeating at his next caucus meeting.   ;D

Next week I think I will drive up to the Linfield game..

Bennie,

Have you ever been to a Linfield game?  Hope you enjoy yourself.  If you'd like to meet some Linfield folks, just continue on Lever St. past the stadium to the Tail Gate section and introduce yourself.  Johnnies are welcome there I am sure.  I've never been to a St. John's game but I would love to at my first opportunity?

While we were a finally tuned machine the last two years we have some serious work to do to get up to anything approaching impressive performance this year.  Our 6 turnovers today did not make for an awe inspiring victory.

"All four"? Since when did we start counting 120-pound runners and dudes with hair down to their shoulders ahead of girls in spandex? Or doesn't johnniepress think volleyball is a sport? I'll agree with dance team, but I have to draw the line somewhere...

I mean, check out the picture on the following link. Does this look fun? Why would someone ever want to do this?

As for the Gusties...

Very interesting game in St. Peter today. GAC jumps out to a 34-0 lead and looks, I'd assume, like they did in its opener out west. Then, after a failed on-side kick to start the second half, proceeds to allow 27 straight points to the Doggies. The 15 fans who braved the wind were going crazy on the visitor sideline as Mongo and Wonka threatened to burn the place down if we lost.

AUG actually had a possession to tie the game down just 34-27, but GAC's D finally made some plays and forced a punt. They tacked on a late touchdown to erase the drama.

Afterwards, I heard an interesting tidbit of news. Gustavus rolled up, roughly, 350 yards and 19 first downs en route to the commanding lead. It managed just 137 and 8 after the break, assuming the 350 is accurate. Let's just say someone new called plays the first half before returning control.
I don't hate Duke. I just hate all their players, coaches and fans.

Johnnie Red

Thanks to everyone who joined us at the Stiftungsfestivities yesterday, especially to Johnnie Esq. for helping make it happen. We must be the first tailgate party in the nation in DIII to have a U.S. Congressman, a Governor and a former district court judge in attendance. Great to see OAS make an appearance, along with the Webmaster's bro.

Congrats to Tim Miles, the Johnnies' cross-country coach (and my former teammate) on winning the MIAC championship yesterday. It was fun watching the Tommie men and women's cc team drive by the tailgate party yesterday on their way to the meet at Como Park. Many thumbs down directed our way.

Already looking forward to November 11 when Royaland comes to Collegeville.

Johnnie Red & Johnnie Esq.- thanks for such a great tailgate party for such a large crowd!

Nice to see & visit with everyone once again- Nov. 11 will be a great day in Collegeville.

Knights: To answer your question- I don't think there is much to say that hasn't been said already. The UST "D" was respectable & created some turnovers. The UST "O" could not find the answer to give Sauer the time to find people down field. 1 yard of rushing is not a stat you want to see in the boxscore. Sauer saved a lot more negative yardage with his feet!

On another note, ask your son if the fan ratio Red/Purple has a mental impact on the players. When the student population of UST is more than double SJU/CSB and they (UST students) don't come out to support their team is there any impact on the players? UST being the largest school in the MIAC doesn't have the same "feel" as the other smaller schoools. Perhaps they (the players) knew this coming in & there is no impact. I guess I'm just curious.
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

SJU doesn't compete in any girls sports.  No one one here said girls in spandex is a bad idea, there just isn't an SJU varsity VB team.

Knights,

I didn't think the defense was too bad, and they did hit hard.  The punter was about as good as I have seen this year.  I saw the placekicker kick one from 50 in warm ups (with the wind, but I wish we had someone who could kick one from 40 with the wind).
