BUDefense, I respecfully disagree about next year.  We return a lot of starters, if you look close.  It will come down to the Johnnies and the Royals next year, but enough about that, let the Johnnies finish this season out first, and see how far they go.  And as far as the MIAC awards, they are right on just like Scrubby said.   Every last one of them......

I haven't necessarily read through all of these pages since the game but feel there were three big contributors to Bethel's defeat.

-Injuries first and foremost.  Not only did Porta not play, both starting safeties for the Royals made early exits including B. Carr after the second series and J. Wagner half way through the second half.  J. Evans also missed some time in the first half but eventually returned while the Bethel runningbacks took a pounding and from the sounds of it may have experienced concussions.  This was a very physical game and I don't think either team will be able to physically keep up with Whitewater after such a game.  Both LAX running backs were also battered and missed significant time!

-Secondly the play-calling was great the whole game on both sides of the ball as adjustments were made by the defense and the offense figured out a way to punch it in after going 0-2 on the first two trips into the red zone.  The one play call that hurt however was the 4th and short snap over the head of 5'6" J. Bangs.  I'm sure the coaches look back and regret the call in terms of situation and personnel.

-Lastly and I'm glad no one has beat this up on the board, however the officiating was brutal at times and very favorable towards UWLAX.  The interception that wasn't ever posessed, the phantom illegal block call way behind the 65 yd. play, the completed pass by LAX that was fumbled and called incomplete.  I could go on with obvious little stuff however these three big calls were hard to watch!

-T. Davis, S. Luebke, and B. Wetzell will be back next season along with all the underclassmen.  Bethel will miss Porta and Carr along with the rest of the seniors however the OLB position is loaded with depth and the running back position will be filled as Bethel always seems to find a top-notch running back and Bangs is one of if not the best back-up scat backs in the league.

-Good Luck St. John's and keep your run going, I'd say it is obvious we are headed towards a Whitewater-Mt. Union Final with Whitewater turning the tide this season.

Its a little early to be talking about next year, but don't sleep on the Oles, they were mostly juniors this year, I think they'll return about 15 or 16 starters. MIAC pride.

Oles?  Isn't "Ole" short for "Our season was over last week"?

wahoo - I agree. The Oles may be the coaches pick as the MIAC favorite next fall. That said, we'll have to see how they handle the expectations, as Meidt's playcalling/ego has gotten in the way in similarly talented groups in the past.
I don't hate Duke. I just hate all their players, coaches and fans.

Wahoo - Did I see that the Cavs beat the Miami Thug-i-canes yesterday? NICE!

WW - I would assume that the Johnnies will probably be the Conference favorite next year, but maybe those are my biases talking, or the fact that they also have a goodly number of underclassmen returning who have had significant playing time this year, and performed quite well. MAYBE.

How many times in the past few years (6-8 years... or even 15-20 years) have the J's not been the preseason pick?

Pick 'em every year to win the MIAC and history tells us you're gonna be right more often than not!

Only missed in 90, 92, 97, 2000, and 2004 since 1989. Conference champs 13 of the last 18 years, not bad :) An even more impressive 11 of 14 since 93!

You're a d-bag. Wow, this feels just like junior high, I love it! Of crap, bell's ringing, gotta get to 1st period algebra class, if I'm late 1 more time, Mrs Sherman's gonna give me a detention! ;D
Now accepting new patients. All bills must be paid in scotch shortly after any services rendered.  Sorry TDT, no problems below the waist.

I already know Wetzell and the O-line will be fine, I think people are underestimating just how important phil porta was to this team, not just from a statistical and playmaking standpoint but from the psychological standpoint. With Phil back there, the team knows that they have a chance of beating anybody. While they respect Jared's scatback ability, it is no substitute for having the most prolific back in MIAC history back there. This is why the coaches have been so adamant the past two years trying to find the heir apparent because they know while its nice to mix it up with Jared, they need more. I'm not sure about the freshmen, from what I've been told they have real ability but I guess we will have to see.

On the defensive side, I think the secondary will be fine. Losing Johnny Evans hurts, but Herm and Holm are two standout kids, and both have significant game experience. And having Beast (Brandon Carr) back will be a huge lift, the kid is a playmaker in every sense of the word.  And yes, the outside backer position will be stocked, as it always is. Edwards, Otto, Voronyak, etc....    D-Line: DECIMATED. I dont think people realize just how important Danielson, Galswyk, Rasanen, and moberg are. The guys they have brought in the past couple years arent anywhere near where they need to be.....running game defense will suffer

Congrats to the Johnnies on their big win over Central. Way to keep the MIAC playoff record looking good. Bethel put up more of an effort than I thought they would with Porta out. Great year for the Royals. It's a shame it had to end.

Remember Royal fans that LAX beat a good D-1AA team in South Dakota State earlier this year. They are a solid team, and you were so very close with the league MVP.

Oh, I'm sorry.  Did I offend?  I forgot to add that "Wahoo" is short for "consistently underperforming sophisticates in redneck territory."  Thank goodness Charlottesville is such an island of culture.

Very true about beating a tough D-1AA SDSU team.  I attended the NDSU/SDSU football game last night at the fargodome and it was spectacular.  About 5 different lead changes.  The game breaker was a 70 yd punt return by Travis White, he stiffed armed a tackler and then the punter got stiff armed as well on his way to the endzone.  Both offenses looked good, defense not so much.  But a fun game to watch.

Good luck to the Johnnies against Whitworth!

What are everyone's thoughts on Michigan staying at #2 in the BCS?

Check the little rubber bits coming up from the field (McNamara's cleats) in this picture.   What I've heard from players re fields like this is that this stuff can fly into your eyes and be a real nuisance (esp. since in some cases these shavings may be metal as well as rubber).

Is this the first season Central has had it?  I recall that the first year the rubber flies more and makes more of a mess until it gets a chance to settle in.  Oh well no more games at Central till next season so no worries.

wahoo-who do the ole's have return at RB?
